Maybe it is caused by the Official ATI Driver (fglrx) bug :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/995184
I had exactly the same problems and got it fixed after the fglrx driver
is removed.

I see this every single time i use the power menu when logged in to do
the shutdown, this is very consistent behavior (9 out of 10 times)
If I select logout and let ubuntu log me out first, I can then choose
shutdown from the log in screen and the system halts properly.

In order to determine if this issue is plymouth related, please boot
your computer with plymouth disabled and then shutdown to see if you can
reproduce the issue? To disable plymouth for a single boot, follow these
steps:
1. Hold Right-Shift during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.

Hi Fabio,
I downloaded the header and completed the installation. This didn't
completely fix the bug, but it did change the behavior of the
shutdown/reboot process of my computer.
Whenever rebooting or shutting down, my computer passes the purple

This exact same issue is occuring for me as well. I am using Ubuntu
10.10 Netbook Remix (which i have patched) installed on an Acer Aspire
One AOD250-1151 Netbook. If I select shutdown and/or restart from the
power menu, the machine clears the desktop and instantly freezes at the
purple screen.
