I didn't touch /etc/fstab, this came with the clean installation. But
now when I think back, I might had copied the CD to an USB stick, and
installed using the stick instead of the cd drive, which would trick the
installer into thinking the CD is at /dev/sdb1 - the usual usb stick
device name.
Was this errorneous fstab entry introduced by you or by pmount? Or by
other software?

Found the culprit: An extraneous cdrom entry in fstab for the /dev/sdb1
device. After commenting out the line from /etc/fstab, the automounting
worked.
