I have the same problem with my machine. XP and Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot,
controlled by Grub2.I can shutdown from XP, but can't from Ubuntu.
Sure I can always mash the power button, but why can Windows do it when
Ubuntu can't?I have tried most of the things suggested here, like
disabling
[Expired for linux (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60
days.]

A quick update.
It looks like this is to do with an irq conflict.
I can get the machine to powerdown in two scenarios:
1) disabling one core of my Athlon X2 245e
2) removing the TV tuner card

FYI - the system reboots fine, it's just the powerdown that's not
working. I haven't yet tested the suspend/hibernate options.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but I have the too many
connections message when the system boots. There's a thread about this
on the forums
