Hrm, maybe the BIOS has configured the pins wrong then? Could you try the other
PIN nodes in hda-analyzer (I'm suspecting 0x13, 0x14 or 0x15) and make sure
that
- OUT is checked
- MUTE is unchecked
You could also try toggling the EAPD and HP checkboxes and see if they make any
difference.

Thanks a lot for your help. Here are the results:
1) Did not have /updates/ in the filename
2) Installed the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.35-28-generic. No change
in stuation. Attached the output from http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh
at this point as

I'd recommend the following:
1) Make sure nothing got installed from your attempt to install these drivers,
modinfo snd-hda-codec should *NOT* return any filename with /updates/ in it
2)
