One potential workaround is if you have a choice between defining your
proxy manually or using an automatic URL, Empathy appears to only work
with the manual proxy entry so if you use the automatic setting Empathy
ignores the proxy. The downside is if you have a mix of IM services,
some requiring
proxy should be updated in ubuntu its not a empathy problem. if you are using
oneiric and not be able to connect through proxy than you should wait untill
this bug fixed.

Muhammad, you didn't read the bug correctly, Empathy uses the proxy. The
problem is that you may not want it to use the proxy although you want
the other network clients to. Here is the usecase (see also comment #3):

I have the same problem.
Empathy is trying to connect through my HTTP only proxy. I would not be
so problematic if this does not crash the proxy...

Me too on natty. Before empathy was unable to use the system proxy and
now is unable to not using it.

Yes, I have this too. I need to use OCS for work (via the pidgin sipe
plugin) but it doesn't use/need the proxy. I need the proxy for access
to the internet though, so I have the global proxy set for apps to
access the internet. I added the OCS server to the proxy ignore list but
that doesn't seem
A global proxy setting is very handy, but individual applications/protocols
must have a way to bypass the proxy.
Don't assume that just because I have set a global proxy I want everything to
go through the proxy.
