ok, so after removing those lines from the source and completing the
recompile. i can offically say that it fixes this bug. (making the gui
core default option as open new windows in tab).

sorry, i've got that alittle backwards... it has been afew weeks.
Ubuntu/Debian's change changes the option in about:config
browser.link.open_newwindow to 2. Without updating wherever the gui is
pulling its data from... so what happens is the core is set to 2 (2 is
open in window) while the gui

Just (clean) installed Ubuntu Feisty which has Firefox 2.0.0.2 by default.
Can still reproduce. Did the following:
Go to EDIT -- PREFERENCES -- TABS New pages should be opened in a new
tab was already selected by default. So...
Go to google.co.uk, click on preferences, tell it open search
something interesting for the debuggers. close firefox. move/delete
~/.mozilla/. launch firefox. goto about:config and watch the value of
this setting. go and toggle it from the menus.
what you will see:
when you first change the option from the menu. the value in about:config
doesn't change.

I can't. Both the Herd 4 and nightly build (19th Feb) both don't work in
Parallels. Giving the error no common cd-rom detected etc.
When it works I'll test it though. Cheers.

I'm having this same difficulty. I haven't done the fix yet so I can
reproduce this bug at will.
I'm on a fresh install of Ubuntu 6.10 (booting 6.11) and Firefox 2.0.0.1
I have a fresh install of XP sans FF, I'll try an install and see if I
can verify that.

a one time bug only after the fresh install or does it happen every time

I guess the word I was missing was that it only happened on a fresh
install so I just wanted to clarify. If this problem exists on other
operating systems then it is actually an issue with firefox and not
something Ubuntu has done to modify firefox.

The link is close but actually what I experienced was the reverse. I
noted the behaviour that new windows were being opened when they should
have been in tabs. Whereas the link you provided shows pages opening in
tabs when they should be in windows. Maybe it's all one and the same
though :) But
