I think the cause of this bug was misunderstood by someone. I also get hanging after screen goes blank in 11.04 (natty) but switching to VT1 and killing gnome-screensaver doesn't help (and I don't even think it's the cause). Every time I notice this problem the last line of Xorg.0.log was like:

ThinkPad T500, Natty 64bit: I turned off the screensaver entirely set the screen to sleep after 5min. Now it doesn't lock up every time, but still locks up. Often, the screen will wake up the GUI will all be frozen. I just tried the Alt + SysRq + r + s + e + i + u + b trick it wouldn't reboot.
