I have two bad news: the first is that the problem remains in Ubuntu 11.10. The
second is that neither of the workaround suggested here has effect on Ubuntu
11.10. The option now is to open a terminal window and use the command
alsamixer. The internal microphone must be enabled in text mode.
I have the same problem and I lost bevieve in open source option. Its
like a pig with the lipstick on, once you get closer to this lady with
the lipstick you realize its not a lady, but a big And what is the
point going to this new unity field and leaving behind so many problems
behind. This
I have a solution
1. Install gamix from ubuntu software center (it doesn't let to do that from
terminal).
2. Launch program. Change from dropbox menu from external mic to internal mic
and close apllication
3. Try skype or something else, it should work now

Same laptop HP Pavilion, same problem. I've installed fresh copy of
Ubuntu 11.04 and mic stopped working (can't tell exacly straitgh way or
after some time) ITs a bit annoying, because Ubuntu pushes with a
lot of new stuff, but fails to fix old bugs, which may one day turn up
without any
Despite that I have had no support from the community about it, I
discovered that it is not a bug of the microphone itself, but only a
malfunction of the sound configuration form. The problem is that in the
Sound Preferences window, the field Conector is not working. I got
around this problem as
I re-installed Ubuntu 11.04 from CD and for a few days internal mic worked
fine.
At some moment, I don't know exactly when, it stoped working and pop sound
began.
