@dcam - I'd say what you are observing is a link state recognition bug,
e.g., the change in link state when plugged or unplugged is not
correctly reported or detected by the driver. That is indeed a new bug,
so I'm marking this one closed.

I can confirm that this specific problem is not visible with the Ubuntu
Jaunty live CD (daily build 14 April),.
However, if you boot the system without a network connection, and then
plug one in, the system does not automatically detect it until 60
seconds later, at which point an Auth eth0
Can you try this with the Jaunty LiveCD?
