This has been a problem I have noticed for some period of time. Just as
the handoff is made into plymouth there is a bright flash it is really
startling when it happens. I'd call it a searing flash. It has grown
worse since there was an updated plymouth as part of an update possibly
a week or two

We have Kubuntu installed on another machine, and I am told the same condition
does happen with it. Although, not as startling an effect as on the ubuntu
12.04 box.

This is probably not a bug in plymouth itself; it's more likely to be a
bug with either grub or the kernel video driver.
Can you reproduce this flash when holding down the shift key at boot to
get the grub boot menu? If so, does the flash happen before the boot
menu is shown, or only after you
The flash occurs about 14 seconds after the kernel is selected and boot
begins. I let grub time out rather than hit enter because I was
recording it with a video camera, but I don't suppose that makes any
difference.
