Confirmation, on an upgraded 12.04 to 14.04 is no delay from boot
process to unity-greeter and loaded desktop background after login. Only
unity itself with launcher and panel takes a while to load.

I experienced the same problem.
It was on a fresh 12.04, with UbuntuStudio (and so U.S. LightDM theme)
installed.
I had these logs : sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log.old
** (lightdm-gtk-greeter:2240): WARNING **: Error getting user list from
org.freedesktop.Accounts: Le délai d'attente
** Description changed:
- The delay is bad on reboot and worse on cold boot (pc and laptop).

Not sure which app process actually is responsible, but both have amd video
cards 4350 and 4200 using radeon driver.
Both use
Perhaps related bug 996589 which indicates there is no feedback about
authentication for 'several seconds'.
Bug 993210 also reports login delay.

What ever happens in the background it does get better. Today the pc on
reboot had a 12 sec. login delay.

On laptop (orig. report) after a cold- and reboot with unity-greeter, login
delay is ~4 sec. until complete desktop. I'll also test pc and expect it won't
be a very different result.

The 14 sec. delay on laptop with gtk-greeter (#6) is reproducable on
reboot, from coldboot login delay is 4 sec. with gtk-greeter (same as on
desktop #5).

Does it happen if you use the gtk greeter? there seems to be a gap while
unity-greeter is sitting that, pulseaudio is running at the same time,
which is a bit weird

Ah, takes ~4 sec. from login to desktop with gtk-greeter, no pulseaudio
or gconf-helper as in the first chart.
