Jacques, Did the: lpadmin -p printer -o psdebug=true have any effect? Also, can you try a different font from Ubuntu-Medium? Myabe one of the DejaVu ones if you have them. If we have to really debug this, it will take quite a bit of effort from both us (and possible a fair amount of paper!).
