[Bug 78281] please upgrade to new version

2007-01-07 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: guikachu

The version currently in the repos (1.4.0) is very old (it uses GNOME1),
and is buggy. I tried following the tutorial at
http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/tour/, but it always crashes
when I try to add a button during Creating a Form.

At http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/ you can find that the
current version is 1.5.10, which uses GNOME2.

Debian has removed this package from unstable, because no Debian
maintainer has done any work on this package. But I would like to use
it.

[Bug 78282] vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update

2007-01-07 Thread feranick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vnc4server

After the update of vnc4server (vnc4 (4.1.1+xorg1.0.2-0ubuntu1.6.10.1)
edgy-security) of today 2006-01-06, vnc4server does not start any longer
in desktop environment mode, only the gray screen with the X mouse
pointer appears. The previous version worked fine in Edgy (with the font
patch).

To reproduce:

1) update to latest version of vnc4server
2) modify the ~/.vnc/xstartup file so vnc starts in full desktop mode
(uncomment the first two lines)
3) run vncserver
4) if you access through vncviewer, you will see the gray screen, no desktop
environment.

Ditto for me also.

[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update

2007-01-07 Thread William Grant
I've isolated the problem a fair bit... xinitrc is run by
~/.vnc/xstartup, which executes `. /etc/X11/Xsession', which in turn
seems to cause any process running it to crash, if it's set to connect
to a Xvnc session. Running an xterm on it manually works fine, and the
Xsession script works fine on a normal X session. I'll work out what it
is that's causing the crash, and get it fixed ASAP.

This problem has only appeared now due to vnc4 not having been built in
Edgy until now, and not due to the security update changes to the
source. The Dapper version of the security update works fine.

[Bug 76301] Re: patch from CVS to fix crash triggered when closing ekiga by example

2007-01-07 Thread Jan Schampera
I don't know of anything we can do to control how many people report this
 bug to GNOME, no.
Unfortunately nothing, of course.

What we can do is prepare, test and release a fix for Ubuntu, which is what
 we are doing.
In the weeks after the fix was done, it didn't look like Ubuntu would use it.
Nearly all the bugreports came from Edgy users (I estimate about 95%). That's
why we shaked our heads after a while.
As of now, the flood time seems to be over, I only get 2-3 DUPs per day for it.
Of course it isn't/wasn't an Ubuntu bug, but Edgy seems to be the only
distribution that either
- used that buggy GNOME-VFS implementation or reported
OR
- reported bugs at all

Hence the confusion on our side about the progress here.

I hope that explains our point of view, at least a little bit.

Regards,
Jan

That is true, unfortunately. Not a use-case I tested, as I didn't expect
an Edgy build to cause a /etc/X11/Xsession running with DISPLAY set to
an Xvnc server to cause the process executing it to terminate, when
running an xterm and the like on the Xvnc server ran fine. A rather odd

[Bug 36014] Re: kernel can't scale cpu frequency

2007-01-07 Thread Constantine Evans
For some reason, my comment I thought I had made a few days ago didn't
show up here.

The issue wasn't in speedstep-centrino, it was in the ppc code of acpi,
acpi_processor_ppc_notifier. My hack of commenting out code in the
speedstep-centrino code was to keep the acpi code from being used to
limit the frequency, and it is quite probable that acpi_cpufreq uses
this code as well.

Nacim Rahal's comments might point to what is happening, however. It
could be that the BIOS is frequency-limiting due to overheating, and
then something is happening to cause the limiting to stick even after
the overheating. I might be able to test this if I have time next week.

2007-01-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Matt, The minimum aging period has elapsed, that would be true if
somebody accepted the upload to edgy-proposed which is apparently not
the case, the upload is waiting on moderation for weeks now.

The bug is not Ubuntu specific, the version shipped with edgy has that
bug though, we didn't update to the new gnomevfs version, Ubuntu has
many users and bug-buddy which is used by default make easy for bugzilla
to get flooded, the combinaisons of those facts makes that most of dups
come from edgy.

The frustration comes from the fact that the proposed update is still
waiting for moderation after some weeks and they keep getting duplicates
for that problem meanwhile

Thank you for reporting this bug.

Two things.
1. Is this bug still active in Edgy ?
2. In Edgy at least (I don't remember about Dapper) I don't have this problem.
But I seem to remember messing with it. Now normally emacs uses ispell but in
Ubuntu we only have aspell. Is it possible that it is only some sort of a
setting that needs to be made, or an extra package the need to be installed in

[Bug 75188] Re: grip should depend on yelp

This is quite an interesting question. No other desktop applications
depend on yelp, but they all use it as their help reader. Yelp is of

This is the section we should be looking at. If it's a UK keyboard, I
would guess that the us should be changed to the correct setting for
UK keyboards. This sort of setting is usually set manually during
installation. You may have missed that during installation, anything is
 possible.

I did not 'miss' the keyboard configuration - with Apple keyboards the
xorg pc104 us setting is the closest match I could find for the
keyboard, much better than the uk keymap.

Without going into too much research myself, I would recommend looking
into changing those settings, starting with a google search for the
xorg.conf options, or just looking to `man xorg.conf`. Let me know if
changing some of those settings helps.

If you still have a dapper livecd, pop it in and see what that section
 is autodetected as!

I believe the problem is not with xorg.conf but with the keymap.

Ubuntu needs to have built-in keymaps for (at least UK and US) Apple
keyboards given the number of users running it on their Macs and iBooks
etc., or a user friendly way of changing the default keymap.

[Bug 78292] Regression: system clock runs at twice the speed

2007-01-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

ATI RS482 chipset, AMD64. System clock runs at twice the speed. The bug
was there in Ubuntu 5.10, but was fixed in Ubuntu 6.06 (and upstream
kernel 2.6.15 had some notice about it being fixed). I didn't notice the
problem with 2.6.19 earlier during feisty development, but 2.6.20 shows
the problem again.

The chipset is buggy, and the kernel used to detect the bugginess and
select correct options automatically. Now again it doesn't work without
kernel option magic, so something has again been changed in disfavor of
RS480/482 chipset users.

[Bug 73023] Re: Round orange emblems have lack usability

2007-01-07 Thread Maniac
I've finally managed to create some mock-ups of what I think would be
good emblems (see attachment emblems-mockup.png). They are not in any
way for real use, I just used stock icons to show my idea.

Some highlights:

- emblems have different color (the purpose of the bug)
- emblems have mostly different contour shape
- to address the idea of uniformity all emblems have one common detail (a green
round pad) that I tried to make both small enough to not interfere with
emblem's shape and to be recognizable from first sight
- the color of the pad is green to not merge into orange Human folders
- the pad's green is intended to be the same shade as on Human 'OK' arrow
though I was a bit lazy to copy it exactly, sorry for this!
- emblems are small for two purposes: to not confuse them with other icons and
to not create too much visual garbage when placed next to tightly arranged
icons (they are now 22px but could easily be shrunk to 20px)

So what do people think about this idea?

[Bug 78295] libata kernel use wrong root device

After upgrading from the 386 to the generic kernels (which all seem to libata)

It's been a while since there has last been any activity in this bug.
And I imagine that there has been some firefox updates in the meantime.
So does this bug still exist ?

[Bug 78296] TEG does not appear in Gnome Menu

2007-01-07 Thread Conrad Knauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: teg

TEG does not appear in Gnome Menu in Edgy or Feisty, though in Dapper it
did though (under Games). As I recall, the problem also affected a
Gnome Panel launcher I had created (before I upgraded), complaining
(after the upgrade) about the image not being found or something.

In Dapper, the icon was located at:
/usr/share/pixmaps/teg_icono.png

But in Edgy and Feisty its located at:
/usr/share/games/teg/pixmaps/teg_icono.png

while the teg.desktop file in the DEB just says:
Icon=teg_icono.png

So is it looking in the wrong pace?

Other than that, TEG seems to run perfectly (which is nice because I
really like it ;)

[Bug 28925] Re: X fails to start in dapper, edgy with ati X600/X700/X800 (control not delegated to radeon driver, ati complains about Mach64).

2007-01-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
This bug is mainly about the problem when X doesn't start and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows the following kind of lines:
(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 8:0:0 could not be detected!
(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 8:0:1 could not be detected!
(EE) No devices detected.

Ie. the upstream bug is about that.

[Bug 78297] Crash when clicking on Type hint in Window Properties

2007-01-07 Thread Loe Spee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: monodevelop

MonoDevelop 0.12 under Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) crashes when trying to set
Type hint in the Window Properties of a newly created window.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start MonoDevelop.
2) Create a new GTK# 2.0 project.
3) Open the MainWindow.cs file.
4) Click on the Designer button so Stetic (the GUI designer) will be visible.
5) Select the MainWindow from the dropdown box.
6) Expand the tree node Window Properties in the Widget Properties window
under the Properties tab.
7) Click on the text Normal behind the property Type hint

As soon as you click on this text, to see what the other options are,
MonoDevelop crashes.

[Bug 34868] Re: Dependency on tetex-base is not specific enough (should depend on =3.0)

2007-01-07 Thread Marcel Stimberg
This is only partially correct: The dapper (and the edgy) package *still*
depends on tetex-base in general and not on tetex-base(=3.0). This is normally
not a problem since the tetex-base package in dapper/edgy has the right
version. However, it is in principle possible to install the dapper/edgy pgf
package together with an older tetex-base version and thereby rendering tikz
(part of pgf) unusable.
Note that this bug has been fixed in the latest debian package.
Regards,
  Marcel

[Bug 78298] Herd1 LiveCD boots, but installer hangs after step 4

2007-01-07 Thread Peter Whittaker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

The Herd1 LiveCD boots fine on my ThinkPad A20m and everything-1 works
fine running from the LiveCD: I am able to mount my normal swap and home
partitions and use them, as I am doing right now.

The -1 is the installer - it goes away after step 4, and never returns
(in other words, I get prompted for localization settings, and nothing
more).

None of the log files are interesting, as far as I can tell. Please
let me know what I can attach to assist with this.

Restarting X (ctrl-alt-backspace) appears to work fine - that is, I can
continue with my LiveCD session.

Note that this machine has three partitions: /dev/hda1, ext3 (destined
to be /); /dev/hda2, swap; /dev/hda3, ext3 (home). Herd1 installation
never gets to the partitioner (as far as I can tell), but I thought
partition information might be an interesting data point.

I will continue running under LiveCD until Herd2, then try again (I
cannot use daily builds as this machine does not have a DVD reader). I
cannot revert to my / installation, as I made the mistake of running
update-manager -c -d a few days ago, and got bitten by a bad libc6 bug
(AFAICT).

[Bug 76546] Re: IBM thinkpads not compatible

2007-01-07 Thread Peter Whittaker
The LiveCD boots fine on my A20m and everything-1 works fine running
from the LiveCD, including sound. I am able to mount my normal swap and
home partitions and use them, as I am doing right now.

The -1 is the installer - it goes away after step 4, and never
returns. Restarting X (ctrl-alt-backspace) appears to work fine. Refer
to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/78298.

So I agree there may be a ThinkPad problem, but the problems described
in the original report are not ThinkPad universal.
