[Bug 183652] Re: [Gutsy SRU request] CUPS fails to start on boot

2008-01-28 Thread Hugues Fournier
The proposed fixes of avahi (allowing avahi to be used by cups without
segfault — while the current fix consists in disabling avahi in cups by
starting it later i.e. reverting the fix of bug 173470) can be tested
from my PPA (packages version 0.6.20-2ubuntu3.3~ppa1) :

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/hugues-fournier/ubuntu gutsy main
( https://launchpad.net/~hugues-fournier/+archive )

Anyone who had triggered the fixed bug on one of one's box is helpful as
this segfault is not easily reproduceable (being timing/load -
dependent)

Of course, beware (for your own sake ;) ) not any other packages than
avahi ones from my PPA on your gutsy system (as I presume you are not
disposed towards getting experimental nspr/nss for your Firefox for
example)

[Bug 156226] Re: Screen is not locked when laptop lid is closed

2008-01-28 Thread Chris Jones
Gerhard: I think the problem is simply that /apps/gnome-power-

fixes the regression.

What makes you think this is a duplicate of bug #173519? This bug is
about closing the lid and re-opening it not locking the screen.

[Bug 186097] Re: awn-manager should depend on python-glade2 and libimage-librsvg-perl

2008-01-28 Thread Knorr
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.

I run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade several times a day, so Hardy is up to
date.
I have gnome-menu 2.21.5-0ubuntu1 and python-menu 2.21.5-0ubuntu1 installed.

librsvg2-common version is 2.20.0-1.

yes, still an issue, I have gutsy and modified the nfs-common script as

I stumbled across the explanation for my problems.
texlive places all ls-R databases centrally, rather in the respective texmf

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2008-01-28 Thread daves
I've just done a clean install of hardy alpha3 (+ updates) and the
problem definitely persists. In its current state, my laptop has been
almost unusable for important work under ubuntu for far too long, and
i've about had it. It even locked up the first time I tried to post
here. Anyway, if it isn't resolved by the time hardy is released, I'm
afraid I'll have to abandon ubuntu. While it is nice to have the new
splashy 3d features, when systems crash with the severity, frequency,
and duration before a solution we have here, I feel that things should
be rolled back to the last know stable version. Yes, it may require
other packages to be downgraded, but IT WILL WORK. The other solution is
to add a notice during installation Sorry, Ubuntu does not work with
your hardware. Please install Windows or try another distribution.

(Sorry for the rant -- not that helpful I know, but as I said, I've basically
had it. I do (did) like ubuntu and have been basically linux-only for a decade
and I hate having to think maybe I should boot up Windows to get some work
done since at least it won't crash :) )
Good luck tracking this issue down!

[Bug 186638] [NEW] Disk partitioning takes too long to start

2008-01-28 Thread Raj Kiran Grandhi
Public bug reported:

While installing ubuntu (7.10) after booting from the live cd, the
installer scans existing partitions in order to find free space.
However, on a machine with several/large partitions, this scanning takes
a lot of time (several minutes). After scanning, the user is asked
whether to resize existing partitions or to manually specify the
partitions. It would be better if the ntfsresize scans are done if and
only if the user asks to resize existing partitions.

Also, if I select some option and decide to go back, the scans of ntfs
partitions are repeated. Caching the results of the earlier scan should
eliminate the need for this repetition.

Also, when choosing to manually specify the partitions, the installer
insists on scanning disks after every operation. That too takes a long
time depending on the number of partitions in the system.

[Bug 186851] [NEW] Seahorse shows imported 0 keys when keys are imported

2008-01-28 Thread Derek Morton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

Running Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty

Seahorse version 2.20.1-0ubuntu1

When importing keys created with the Back up key rings utility in
Seahorse, Seahorse shows in the bottom status bar Imported 0 keys when
keys have actually been imported successfully. These keys were named
secring.gpg and pubring.gpg and were created with the Back Up Key
Rings option in Seahorse.

Seahorse also does not recognize *.gpg as a valid key file, but it does
import them.

Brian

thanks for the very quick answer

attached are:
- the output from the cat command which suggests the HDA Intel device
is attached to card 0
- a copy of the alsa-base file (reformatted windows-style)

No driver seems to be assigned to 0, so that might be a reason why no
sound device is recognized.

Can you further advise?

[Bug 184393] Re: [Hardy alpha 3] System suspends but dont resume

2008-01-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi espi3d,

Thank you for your report and helping to make Ubuntu better. Hardy
Alpha 4 should be out within the next few days. It would be great if
you could test with the Alpha4 LiveCD and verify the issue still exists.
If so, per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the
following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate
attachment.

* uname -a  uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature  version.log
* dmesg  dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn  lspci-vvnn.log

Also, the following wiki may help:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend . As documented in that
wiki, it would be helpful if you could capture the dmesg output after a
suspend/resume attempt. For more information regarding the kernel team
bug policy, please refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we
appreciate your help and feedback.

[Bug 137051] Re: Partition UUID changes after upgrade, cannot mount partitions

2008-01-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi David,

It's noteworthy that in your menu.lst, the kopt and kopt_2_6 options
list two different UUIDs. The kopt_2_6 option is the one that's been
automatically mapped to the kernel boot options, which is what's
expected; what isn't clear is why this is different from the kopt
value, which is presumably the real UUID of your device, and which also
appears in your fstab.

Could you confirm the current UUID of your root filesystem? You can query this
with the command:
dumpe2fs -h /dev/sda1 |grep UUID

start
cryptdisks does succeed in creating the device
/dev/mapper/cryptbak. Unfortunately it does so only after a
mysterious delay of 3 minutes. The 3 minutes begins on the call to
cryptdisks restart cryptbak. At the end of the interval, cryptdisks
reports success.

Some details on the setup.

/etc/crypttab
   # target name source device key file options
   cryptbak /dev/bakker /etc/backuppc/diskparm.txt luks,loud,tries=1

/etc/udev/rules.d/50-nick.rules
   KERNEL==sd?1, ATTRS{serial}==DEF10BBE1D0D, NAME=$kernel, \
  SYMLINK+=bakker, RUN+=/usr/local/sbin/cryptbak.sh

/usr/local/sbin/cryptbak.sh

   #!/bin/bash

   TAG=$(basename $0)

   logger -t $TAG starts...

   logger -t $TAG Looking for bakker: $(ls -l /dev/bakk*)

   invoke-rc.d cryptdisks restart cryptbak
   RET=$?

   logger -t $TAG cryptdisks returned $RET.

   exit 0

/etc/init.d/cryptdisks has this line added just after the set -e:
logger -t cryptdisks begins, args: $@

Example session. On plugging in the external disk, syslog reports:

   Jan 28 13:56:27 boron kernel: [ 9178.115246] sdc: sdc1
   Jan 28 13:56:27 boron kernel: [ 9178.126109] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI

At this point, nothing related to cryptdisks is apparently happening.

[Bug 186666] Re: Hardy cannot recognize sis191 network adaptor

2008-01-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi firas,

Just a few things. Hardy Alpha 4 is set to come out in a few days. It
will have an updated version of the kernel. It would be great if you
could verify if this issue still exists with Alpha 4 as well. The
reason I say this is I noticed some changes that were pulled in for the
sis190 diver: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/ . If the
issue still exists, per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please
attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as
a separate attachment.

* uname -a  uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature  version.log
* dmesg  dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn  lspci-vvnn.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer

appreciate your help and feedback.

Re: [Bug 153451] Re: Double Home Directory

2008-01-28 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
At least when it comes to 32-bit, it's not fixed. I only use 64-bit so I
don't know if 32-bit installations still have this problem.

On Saturday, I installed 7.10 on a new machine, and applied all available
updates. After all updates were installed and I rebooted, I proceeded to
create launchers on the desktop and the same thing happened again.

On my current installation of 7.10, it still happens. In addition, I also
have an 8.04 installation with all updates and it too has the same problem.

Re: [Bug 145112] Re: Random NVidia Proprietary Driver Lock-Ups with dual core + 7300

2008-01-28 Thread OlivierP
2008/1/25, Andrew [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

The new version has been stable for me. What I don't understand is why
 there
can only be 1 version in the repositories. There are multiple kernels, 2
apache versions, 3 python versions, 2 tomcat versions, etc. Why can't
 there
be several nvidia packages and have a virtual package that points to the
latest, like the kernel? That was if there is a regression for some people
they can forbid that version using apt.

Seconded. The drivers are currently part of linux-restricted-modules, so
everyone gets both the new and legacy versions of the modules.

I'd really appreciate a Ubuntu maintainer's viewpoint on having l-r-m
depend on a separate nvidia-driver pseudo-package. This would allow
distinct versions of both the nvidia-new nvidia-legacy packages, who would
provide the pseudo package and conflict with each other.

I do understand that this would indeed increase the maintainer's work, and
the associated complexity of maintaining several versions and dependencies.
Nonetheless, on a 1-year old dual-core laptop, I don't care about the legacy
driver. On the 2 year single core, I don't need the 169.xx driver or the
legacy one, and on the old PIII, I need the legacy driver, and can do
without the space overhead of the other modules included in l-r-m.

Anyone have an idea on how to escalate the issue within Canonical to at
least get a clear statement on this bug ??

[Bug 186251] Re: Flash framerate is slower than the older version of Flash

2008-01-28 Thread Cyrus Jones
Sorry to be a nuisance, but Adobe forbids distribution of the flash
plugin (that is why the Ubuntu package merely fetches the installer from
Adobe and sets up nspluginwrapper). The file attachment should be
removed.

No. The Adobe free Player distribution agreement does not allow you to
distribute the Players from your website. You must direct visitors to the Adobe
Web Players area of our Downloads site. To easily link to our website, we
provide Adobe Web Player buttons that you can display on your site. You can
download the buttons and view the guidelines here:
http://www.adobe.com/macromedia/style_guide/buttons/;
http://www.adobe.com/licensing/distribution/faq/#item-1-4
http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/players/flash/

The only legal option is to have people download older versions of flash
from
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp9_archive.zip
which is an archived file of major Flash 9 releases (75 MB). Extract the
file, navigate to /fp9_archive/9r48/ and then extract
install_flash_player_9r48_linux.tar.gz. In the newly created directory
you will find libflashplayer.so which you can use as said in the
previous comment.

[Bug 186831] [NEW] Documentation error in postgresql-common

2008-01-28 Thread alyandon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: postgresql-common

The file /etc/cron.d/postgresql-common installed by the postgresql-
common package offers the following advice:

# On Sunday you may wish to run a VACUUM FULL ANALYSE as well
# If you do not run a 24/7 site, you may want to uncomment the next line
# so as to do a regular VACUUM FULL. If you need 24/7 connectivity, save
# VACUUM FULL for when you think you really need it.
# 10 3 * * Sun root if [ -x /usr/sbin/pg_maintenance ]; then
/usr/sbin/pg_maintenance --full --analyze /dev/null; fi

I believe the general consensus of the Postgresql community is that
running vacuum full periodically against a database is rarely
considered a good idea as it can lead to issues like index bloat.
Perhaps this file should reflect that sentiment and point interested
people to the documentation on Postgresql's website so that they can
fully understand the impact that vacuum full can have on a database.

[Bug 129982] Re: Default keyboard layout for Dutch language

2008-01-28 Thread Pjotr12345
Further clarification: the Dutch keyboard needs the layout US
International (with dead keys) because there are many words in Dutch
with accents on the characters. Like ë, á, è, ï, ö. You catch my
drift

The layout US International (with dead keys) should therefore be the
standard installation choice for Dutch users. Dutch programmers who
dislike dead keys because it interferes with programming, can always
make a different choice. But the mainstream Dutch user really needs the
layout US International (with dead keys).

Greetz, Pjotr.

[Bug 186802] Re: Please sync griffith 0.9.6-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-01-28 Thread Scott Kitterman
We're kind of stuck with this as the current Griffith is broken with
python-sqlalchemy 0.4 which we already have in the repos. I discussed
with upstream and a compatible Griffith version should make feature
freeze, so this extra copy of python-sqlalchemy should just be
temporary.

[Bug 186623] Re: Cannot set lock option in menu.lst without being overriden by update-grub

2008-01-28 Thread Infodroid
Thanks for confirming and also pointing out that the lock option won't
be silently overridden by upgrades anymore. At this point it seems the
bug title is no longer relevant. Rather it could be Cannot set lock
option without messy kernel upgrade procedure.

To clarify, I am making the case for a new option called lockdefault
which will do for the default kernel what the other locks for other
kernels.

My thoughts are that if you are going through all the trouble of looking
out for the lock option, and then bailing out of a grub update because
you don't want to override it, you might as well just support the lock
option in the automagic default options so that kernel upgrades aren't
problematic.

Another point is that the lock option is a grub _feature_ which people
do use on their default kernel, regardless of breakage and
inconveniences relating to debian's update-grub. It is debatable whether
such people are misguided, but they will no doubt continue to use the
lock option in this way under the impression that their system is more
secure that way.

I accept that people who do this are not going to have unattended
upgrades. However, I did not suggest that the distro is shipped with the
lock option enabled by default and thereby break the unattended
upgrades. Rather, this is a feature for those who do edit the menu.lst
by hand.

[Bug 173153] Re: [CVE-2007-6061] Denial of service and deletion of an arbitrary directory tree via symlink attack

2008-01-28 Thread Kees Cook
I've adjusted the dapper/feisty pockets, and added the inline patch to
the patches directory. I cleaned up the changelogs to follow the
examples in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityUpdateProcedures

The fixes are building now and should be published shortly. Thanks!

[Bug 138886] Re: Update request: Bugzilla version 3.0

2008-01-28 Thread William Gallafent
The relevant debian page is:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=bugzilla#_0_6_4

The three wishlist items regarding bz 3.0 are:

http://bugs.debian.org/415416
http://bugs.debian.org/429631
http://bugs.debian.org/438974

The second of those suggests that maintainership of this debian package
is up for grabs ... perhaps an ubuntu team member could step up?
