I would like to add a comment to what Serge Maneuf said: this issue also
occurs for me in Gutsy 7.10, with GNOME and Compiz active. The point is
that it's very difficult to know what causes this hang when we want to
shutdown the PC as it's difficult to reproduce all the time. It seems
erratic.

You all might be interested in knowing that I found a workaround. Just
download the portable C sources for the latest MIT-Scheme from
http://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/ and follow the instructions to
build. The compilation takes an hour or two but went off without a hitch
and MIT-Scheme works

I can confirm that changing to libnss-ldapd seems to solve the problem
here.
One configuration quirk: To control authorization per-host via LDAP, I
had the following in my old libnss-ldap /etc/ldap.conf:

the FTDI USB to serial adapter as a braille device, just because a
manufacturer of braille devices used this particular chip to add a USB

Why should it depend? There is no reason for that. The music is no
absolute requirement, and Recommends are pulled in automatically by the
package tools unless the system is explicitly configured differently.

This computer has no nVidia, e1000, or wireless of any kind.
According to your crash logs, your machine does have nVidia.

I upgraded to Hardy yesterday - I am experiencing this bug again. Daniel's
patch from bug 156893 had fixed it in Gutsy.
bug 89269 says Fix released, so I guess that's not it.

The most likely problem is with the ess package. I had installed it by
hand, because the repository package was several revisions behind, and
created my own line in the init.el file to load it. This error arose
only on my desktop, where I had first installed the ubuntu ess (5.3.0)
