Mathias Gug [2008-06-25 19:33 -]:
In the second test case described above, the first occurence of load
the index.html page in browser should be load /apache2-default/ as
 index.html doesn't exist in dapper.

Does that mean, it was just a copypaste error in the bug followup, or
there is actually something wrong in the package?

Same problem, but installing Samba didn't change anything. Editing

the default line of send host-name hostname; was present, if I
changed it to send the actual host name that didn't make any
difference).

It was a copypaste error in the bug followup. There is nothing wrong in
the package as this operational step relates to the existing package in
dapper and is done _before_ the upgrade.

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-06-26 Thread Davias
So, just to summarize, we are stuck to ubuntu 7.10?

I would like to upgrade to 8.04 for many reasons, but to risk to find
myself with the same problem as before is unacceptable.

Do you guys think situation will improve by the time of 8.10 ?

Do you also find the following procedure suitable:

1) unplug 1 drive from RAID 1
2) update ubuntu from 7.10 to 8.04 with only one drive in the array
3) verify that everything works; if yes...
4) add the drive as spare and reassemble
5) No, upgrade is not good; then...
6) plug back the old drive and start the machine with that and reassemble the
other as spare...

Help? Suggestions?

TIA

[Bug 237460] Re: Root on iscsi is not supported

2008-06-26 Thread Soren Hansen
Just to fill in a bit more info:

1. The hw-detect problem should be straightforward enough, so I won't go into
much depth about that.
2. The problems involing open-iscsi are many-fold:
2.a. Networking is not configured in initramfs (yet the network is clearly up
since we have loaded the initramfs somehow).
2.a.I Debian fixes this by leeching off of nfsroot's networking code. This is
rather crappy, and doesn't have installer support (but needs it).
2.a.II The open-iscsi package has code (but doesn't ship the binary, IIRC) to
extract the networking info from the PXE firmware (or whereever it resides. I'm
not entirely sure). IIRC, the open-iscsi web page explains how to use this.
2.b. Then the network is up, we should be able to mount the root filesystem by
doing the usual iscsi stuff to get access to the block devices. This might
require some udev support in the initramfs, but I actually don't think so (UUID
based mounting ftw!))
2.c. When the root filesystem is mounted, and hence the network is up, we
should be careful as to not nuke it, when we actually finish booting, but we
should still let ifupdown configure the network properly (to get bonding
running and such).

There's probably more, but that should be enough to get started working
on it.

[Bug 243338] [NEW] wireless network connection lost on samba connect

2008-06-26 Thread Romke Nijkamp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbclient

Symptoms:
When you connect to a samba server over a wireless network the following
happens:
1. The connection to the ap is disconnected.
2. You are not able to connect to the access point anymore.
3. Other access points work just like if nothing happened.
4. This is driver-independent

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to a samba share.
2. If i cannot successfully connect to a samba share then the bug does not
occur.

Other Notes:
I am connecting with the connect to server option in gnome.
The server is running samba server on slugosbe 4.8 and is using versions:
samba - 3.0.23c-r1 from openslug/slugosbe feed.

The client is just running the default settings on ubuntu hardy 32-bit and is
using versions:
libsmbclient: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4
nautilus-share: 0.7.2-0ubuntu5
samba-common: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4
smbclient: 3.0.28-1ubuntu4
ndiswrapper{
utils version: '1.9', utils version needed by module: '1.9'
module details:
filename:
/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/ubuntu/misc/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko
version:1.52
vermagic: 2.6.24-16-generic SMP mod_unload
}
and of course a wireless-n network driver WUSB300N from linksys.
Note: i have this problem on many hardware configurations - all the systems
with wi-fi
The ubuntu system does not have any extra repository's enabled except the
defaults.

Expected:
I expected that when you connect to a samba share that wi-fi is unaffected.

  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
+
+ SRU justification: breaks installation of new packages when particular
+ packages from universe are installed from the previous LTS release
+
+ Does not apply to intrepid, for which direct upgrades from dapper are
+ not supported.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ 1) Install mysql-server-4.1 and mysql-client-4.1 from dapper.
+ 2) upgrade to hardy.
+ 3) install the mysql-client and mysql-server packages.
+ 4) observe that the upgrade fails with file conflicts.
+ 5) enable hardy-proposed.
+ 6) try again to install the mysql-client and mysql-server packages.
+ 7) observe that the upgrade completes successfully, with removal of the old
mysql-{client,server}-4.1 packages.
+
+ Regression potential: minimal, since the only change is to declare
+ conflicts/replaces with packages that already have these file conflicts
+ in practice. However, the impact of this bug is also lower than I
+ originally thought, because it can't be triggered on a dapper-hardy
+ upgrade itself since the mysql-client and mysql-server metapackages are
+ /already/ pointing at 5.0 in dapper, and already have the undeclared
+ file conflicts. Therefore this SRU does not need to be accepted prior
+ to the 8.04.1 point release.

[Bug 174756] Re: Inspiron 1420: Intel GM965 s-video TV-out shows wrong colors on Ubuntu 7.10

2008-06-26 Thread supser_hill
I have a aopen MP965DR miniPC, I've update the xserver-xorg-video-intel

is also seem too bright, indeed I think it not bright, it seems some
color have lost(I try to set the depth to 24 in xorg.conf, but still not
work). But when I change the driver to vesa, the color problem is
solved, but I can't set the size of the output screen.

What the problem with the driver?

[Bug 51124] Re: Glitch renaming directory

2008-06-26 Thread Federico Del Bene
If you follow the description, you'll see the bug it's still here in
Ubuntu 8.04 and Nautilus 2.22.3:

1) Create a directory named A
2) Right click on the directory in Nautilus, select Rename and change the name
to B, WITHOUT giving enter or clicking elsewhere
3) Now, with the name still editable, double click the directory to open it
4) The address bar in nautilus will show that the directory is still named A
BUT:
5) If you do a ls command, instead you'll see the directory is now named B
6) If you click the back button in nautilus you'll see the directory as B

This show that at a given time, Nautilus is showing incorrect
information and so I call it a bug.

I think that this bug is related with bug 205374. Can you read it and confirm
that it's the same issue ? Thanks in advance.

The problem may well be related, especially since it's the same kind of
ethernet card. In my case, Ubuntu always *finds* the Ethernet card, but
yes, it also stops working with any traffic after a few seconds.

Note:
This worked fine in Ubuntu 7.10. The problems started after upgrade to
8.04. I thought about doing a clean reinstall of Ubuntu, but alarmingly
the 8.04 live CD had the same problems; i think maybe the driver has
uploaded some wrong firmware to the Ethernet card, and since the live CD
wanted to use the same driver, it let the pernicious firmware be?

Anyway, it works fine in Windows XP, and it also works fine in gNewSense
2, which I have since switched to.

[Bug 243149] [NEW] ATI X 1600 Pro

2008-06-26 Thread residentalien
Public bug reported:

What on earth must one do to get their ATI X 1600 Pro to work properly
with Hardy?

The envy drivers cause a black screen

The Ubuntu drivers cause a black screen

The vesa drivers are not an option. Why would I have a nice video card
with no 3D effects?

I have seen endless posts regarding ATI drivers and no 3D effects and or
black screens. My bug report is not so much that this is a problem but
why hasn't anyone fixed it yet? If there is a solution please point me
in the right direction, but I have yet to find it. I must insist that
the solution be complete and instruct you on how exactly to install the
drivers and then how to configure X to use them.

Thanks.

[Bug 198267] Re: wireless rt61pci driver buggy in Hardy alpha (only 1Mbit/s) - used to be fine on Gutsy

2008-06-26 Thread Rob van der Linde
Update:

After reboot, I got 1 mbps again, first I tried:

sudo ifdown -a
sudo ifup -a

Nothing happened at all, network manager didnt even seem to bring the
link down at all typing the ifdown command, but then again I have had
loads of issues with network manager both in gutsy and hardy, both for
wireless and wired networks, I don't really trust that app it seems a
bit flakey still.

Anyway, so I tried clicking on my wireless connection again, network
manager reconnected to my network, and I got full speed again after the
reconnect.

After a reboot I seem to have to simply click on my network to reconnect
to get full speed, as it seems to still start at 1 mbits after a reboot.
easily solved with a reconnect but shouldn't really be necessary.

Thanks for your detailled test report!

[Bug 183514] Re: [hardy] seahorse agent no longer asks for the passphrase

2008-06-26 Thread Olaf Lenz
The gpg issue seems to be solved by now, the solution being to delete

  /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90gpg-agent

which should not be there when seahorse-agent is used.

Still, the problem with the ssh keys seems to persist: in hardy, I have to use
ssh-add again, as seahorse does not seem to work together with the ssh-agent.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

[Bug 243152] [NEW] Doesn't work well with the pulseaudio alsa plugin

2008-06-26 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

Taken from http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=472811:

VLC only plays without audio when using the pulse alsa plugin. When i looked
into this it seems that VLC requests quite a big buffer. Which is ofcourse
fine. Pulseaudio allows such a big buffer and will start playing when the
  requested buffer is nearly full.

What this means is that untill the buffer is full the reported latency will
obviously increase. Unfortunately it seems that the latency of a full buffer
is so big that VLC thinks something is wrong and starts playing without
  audio.

Changing the buffer size of 256 periods to 16 periods seems to fix this
issue. (Somewhat of a workaround but still)

[Bug 159721] Re: failed to install packages from backup dvd

2008-06-26 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Thank you for your contribution to Ubuntu. While the debdiff is correct, the
package itself has a number of problems:
 * The .desktop file doesn't validate with desktop-file-validate
 * It doesn't build twice in a row (the clean target misses a large number of
binary translation files)
 * It has a number of Lintian warnings.
 * It's missing a watch file

While these aren't your fault, would you like to fix them? If not, I'll
look at fixing these problems before uploading your fix.

[Bug 243003] Re: Hardy cannot connect wirelessly to DLINK DSL-G604T

2008-06-26 Thread Pascal Sachs
First you have to scan for the accesspoint with: iwlist scan
Then you have to set the data, this may differ. If you use for example a
128-Bit WEP with a string password you have to type:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 essid [Name of the Connection] ap [MAC Address of the
Access point] key s:[Key]
And then to get an IP Address:
sudo dhclient wlan0

maybe you have to use another device name then wlan0, like ath0 or
something like that

Before you can connect like that you have to kill the Network Manger, because
else it will overwrite your connection data:
sudo killall NetworkManager

for more information on ifconfig and iwlist read the manpages: just type
man ifconfig or man iwlist in the console.

[Bug 222922] Re: snd-bt-sco creates an unusable device

2008-06-26 Thread bruno pennec
same for me...
btsco seems to be broken since kernel 2.6.24 due to a interface change in
kernel :

Found on bluetooth-alsa (home of btsco, 2008-1-19):
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=1875201group_id=116589atid=678258
  :
linux 2.6.24 got a bluetooth-related change (introduction of eSCO as far as I
know), which makes none of the currently available patches (i.e.
sco-flowcontrol-v4.3.diff or sco-flowcontrol-v4.4.diff or earlier)
applyanymore. Thus, bluetooth-alsa is not usable for users of newer kernels.
Also trying to resolve the rejected hunks by hand (without understanding the
bluetooth code in the kernel) did not bring any luck. :-(

If it's true, only a CVS update can help us...

2008-06-26 Thread Juanjo Garcia-Ripoll
I have a probably related problem. Namely, when running vinagre to
connect to a kvm virtual machine, running Windows, the mouse seems to
believe that the screen border is not where it should be.

The consequence is that I sometimes cannot reach the Start button,
because the mouse cursor cannot go below a certain row, or certain icons
cannot be clicked.

This problem seems to be solved by shaking quickly the mouse, that is,
moving it very fast. Seems that then the cursor overcomes those previous
limits -- probably due to a miscalculation of the coordinates again.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-06-26 Thread Pacho Ramos
Is fully disabling Power Manager really needed? Wouldn't it cause some
problems related with overheat or short battery lifetime?

Seems that my hardrive is now using 128 value:
# hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep Advanced
Advanced power management level: 128
   *Advanced Power Management feature set
# smartctl -a /dev/sda -d ata | grep Load
193 Load_Cycle_Count0x0032 090 090 000Old_age Always -
218785
# smartctl -a /dev/sda -d ata | grep Power
  9 Power_On_Seconds0x0032 076 076 000Old_age Always -
  12338h+14m+13s
 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 099 099 000Old_age Always
- 5498
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 098 098 000Old_age Always -
  569

218785 doesn't seem a bad value, after reading man hdparm:

-B Set Advanced Power Management feature, if the drive supports it.
A low value means aggressive power management and a high value
means better performance. Possible settings range from values 1
through 127 (which permit spin-down), and values 128 through 254
(which do not permit spin-down). The highest degree of power
management is attained with a setting of 1, and the highest I/O
performance with a setting of 254. A value of 255 tells hdparm
to disable Advanced Power Management altogether on the drive
(not all drives support disabling it, but most do).

Power save should still being enabled. Could it be related with me using
reiserfs instead of ext3 for / ? :-/

[Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it

2008-06-26 Thread bsh
i have this bug (or i'd say, annoyance) too, on 7.04 with xfce (but in gnome
too) on several machines.
when i start synaptic, i used to move the mouse on the search button while it
loads the list, for a faster searching. but when the load completes and the
search button becomes active, it's not clickable - have to move the mouse off
it and than back, as described in the first post.

i wonder why this couldn't been fixed since years? strange. but i'm not
complaining, ubuntu is still a superb little OS. :)
