Eventually the problem was solved when I found some fonts (Lucida
Grande?) which did not have the read attribute. I think from memory
something like sudo chmod +r /usr/local/share/fonts/* fixed it for me.

1)Update manager loops when it encounters errors in updates (it should
issue error warning or return to status-quo rather than looping)
2)Why are some 'updates' issued with errors in them ? Possibly one of

VMWare workstation to run winxp on ubuntu 8.04. I had the same problems
described in this email when running the vmware session in full screen

I have probably a similar problem now with openoffice on hardy heron.
For some reason the numerical characters are not always converted the

I am running the current (Hardy) release, and I don't have the problem.
It seems to me, though my memory is not all that clear , that the
problem was related to a bad DVD drive.
