I am not a lawyer but I think that Dell is responsible here. Ubuntu
usually installs flawlessly if you do it yourself from a live CD or a
USB flash drive. That means that Dell screwed it up and not Ubuntu.
Since your Dell mini has no CD drive, you should probably use a USB
flash drive if you want
Btw, installing Ubuntu is not as difficult as it looks like and your
daughter would learn a lot about computers if she tries. Just my
suggestion though.

Guys here is what works for me: I went to system--preferences--
appearance (funny how people leave out the middle step, which is
confusing to newer users) then i chose no effects. it went back to
normal. When i chose the medium grade appearance, it worked normally
again, no obnoxious full screen

I can confirm this behavior. On both of my machines (x64 and 32-bit),
with apport enabled, crash reports stop at the Lost Something? page as
described above.
