Running a fully patched (including intrepid-proposed) Ubuntu 8.10 i386
install. I am able to connect with wvdial/gnome-ppp just fine, including
as I write this. The connection is to T-Mobile in the UK, but I'm not
sure this has any bearing.

Oddly, I also have two modem devices detected:

[ 4930.062123] usb 5-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[ 4930.207543] usb 5-3: configuration #3 chosen from 1 choice
[ 4930.216272] cdc_acm 5-3:3.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
[ 4930.227198] cdc_acm 5-3:3.3: ttyACM1: USB ACM device
[ 4930.254812] cdc_wdm 5-3:3.7: cdc-wdm0: USB WDM device
[ 4930.264535] usb0: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-:00:1d.7-3, CDC Ethernet
Device, 02:80:37:0d:03:00

Both exhibit exactly the same behaviour (as pasted above) and I'm not
quite sure what the difference is. usb0 is broken in the K850i, which is
a great shame: with the k800i, you can simply request a DHCP lease via
usb0 and you're good to go. :(

As an annoying side effect, network manager does not include any manual
control of the 'offline' mode that it extends to Firefox and pidgin (and
possibly other apps.) This means that pidgin requires coercing to
connect instead of simply stating 'waiting for network' when you select
'online', and Firefox requires that you un-check the 'work offline'
checkbox in the File menu each time the program is loaded.

It appears that network manager was designed to be extremely pretentious
in this regard; ignoring the fact that you could be connected to a
network without it. I don't dislike the integration, but I DO dislike
that there is no manual over-ride of the feature in network manager
itself. I understand, however, that this is only a side affect of the
bug in question, and should be raised as a separate feature request.

Regards,

Tom

[Bug 316872] Re: Patched grub will not boot from EXT4 partition

2009-01-19 Thread Vladimir Buell
I have the same problem today when I tried to migrate to ext4.

1. Up-to date jaunty with new grub
2. Used jaunty alpha 3 liveCD to convert partition
3. Via live-cd:
  tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/sda1
  fsck -pf /dev/sda1
  mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 /disk
  vi etc/fstab (ext3 - ext4)
  vi boot/grub/menu.lst (add rootfstype=ext4)
4. Reboot
5. Observing a grub prompt
6. grubsetup (hd0) doesn't help

I have only one partitions for boot, root and home.

[Bug 317894] Re: grandr not in menu

2009-01-19 Thread James Westby
Hi,

What do you think of using NotShowIn=KDE; instead? I imagine that was
the point of the line, and it would work in Xfce, LXDE etc.

Also, changing the build system used in a package coming from Debian
should be an exceptional event. If you have problems with the rules file
then I will be happy to help fixing them, and we can then supply patches
for the problem to the Debian maintainer.

On that note has this issue been filed in the Debian BTS?

Thanks,

James

Bootup with (K)Ubuntu cd and edit as root etc\groups to add user name to admin

[Bug 37821] Re: Regular network drops with madwifi

2009-01-19 Thread Gustavo Puy
I've fight with this problem for long time. This is about a algorithm in
HAL called ANI (Ambient Noise Immunization). ANI avoid a common
nightmare called 'stuck beacon error', but in some chipsets brings low
performance and recurrent disconnections. Since 9.4 version there's the
possibility to turn off at runtime with a sysctl event. Try this:

TERMINAL
sysctl -w dev.wifi0.intmit=0

If it's ok you can edit /etc/sysctl.conf and add 'dev.wifi0.intmit=0' at
end of file for set it at boot time.

[Bug 318694] [NEW] gthumb is called with --import-photos on any directory

2009-01-19 Thread Francesco Potortì
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am not sure who is the culprit here, I wrote nautilus as a guess.

I have a directory full of images on my desktop. I right click on it,
because I use to open it with Gthumb. However, after upgrading to Ubuntu
8.10, Nautilus does not seem to remember this. So I choose Open with
other application and select Gthumb. Unfortunately, this does not work
as expected, because for some reason Gthumb is called with the --import-
photos option, so instead of opening the directory it tries to import
photos from a camera.

[Bug 318071] Re: gpilotd crash all syncs after Palm T3 hard reset: *** glibc detected *** gpilotd: corrupted double-linked list:

2009-01-19 Thread Matt Davey
I seem to recall there are several 'well known' PRCs that crash the palm
if you try to restore them. Typically these are files that are pre-
installed and do not need to be backed up or restored. pilot-xfer knows
about some of them and skips them, but it is certainly possible that you
have found extras.

If you do continue to restore files, it would be useful if you posted a
list of the files you were unable to restore, and any error messages
that you received from pilot-xfer.

I would recommend you use pilot-xfer, and, if you can, please send a
list of the files you had to skip to this bug report.

[Bug 306168] Re: Unable to connect network drive SAMBA Share

2009-01-19 Thread Thierry Carrez
The idea is to enable the PPA as a valid source of packages and run a regular
upgrade.
I'd not recommend it if this is not a test environment. Better wait for the
regular updated package in that case...

If you still accept to do it here is a quick recipe:
Add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tcarrez/ubuntu intrepid main at the end of
your /etc/apt/sources.list
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
This will upgrade all your samba packages to samba_3.2.3-1ubuntu3.5~ppa1
(including samba-common).
The PPA package will be replaced when the regular 3.2.3-1ubuntu3.5 is released.

[Bug 316199] Re: PA Sound Preferences mutes Front speaker volume by default

2009-01-19 Thread Roderic Jones
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 315971 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/315971

I have had a problem with sound in Jaunty alpha 3. There is no sound on
installation of both the 32 bit and 64 versions. I have an Audigy Card
and the motherboard sound is turned off in the BIOS. Trying the
suggestions above made no difference. The solution was to install gnome-
alsamixer. On the bottom panel both Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack
and External amplifier were checked. By unchecking Audigy
Analog/Digital Output Jack leaving only External amplifier checked -
sound works OK.

I installed the 64 bit version of Jaunty this morning and the first
udates included ALSA-utils. Perhaps this needs looking at.

2009-01-19 Thread Louis-Xavier Brusset
Hello,
as the log file does not exist anymore we can see that purging winbind
removed the idmap errors.

For samba_3.2.3-1ubuntu3.5~ppa1 in your PPA, is there a procedure to install
this whithout uninstalling ubuntu-desktop ?
I tried to install your .deb files but as
samba-common_3.2.3-1ubuntu3.5~ppa1_i386 broke my dependencies I had to
reinstall the standard version.
I can't install samba_3.2.3-1ubuntu3.5~ppa1_i386 without installing your
version of samba-common.

I am blocked by my inexperiency of installing non standard versions ...

Regards,
LBT

[Bug 318508] Re: Unable to mount ISO file using Archive Mounter

2009-01-19 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

I did follow the description from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncRequestProcess which says

If there are Ubuntu changes apart from debian/changelog or if FeatureFreeze
is in effect:
* A copy of the entries from debian/changelog corresponding to the
changes relative to the current version in Ubuntu

and after that If there are Ubuntu changes:. Maybe it should say If
there are *no* Ubuntu changes apart [...]? And I thought Ubuntu only
modified debian/control automatically, not debian/changelog?

[Bug 318198] Re: There's no audio

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 318718] [NEW] cups prepares and prints on different page sizes

2009-01-19 Thread Hans-Peter Oeri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

Since the latest cups intrepid updates, printing envelopes does not work
anymore.

It looks as if cups renders the document on a full page (A4/letter?)
and then crops the result to the enveloppe size (DIN C5).

To reproduce:
1. Open OO Writer, set page size to C5 landscape
2. print document on tray 1 (enveloppe tray)
3. Verify that printer (HP LJ 2300 in my case) asks for C5 paper
4. feed C5 enveloppe

So even though the printout is on C5 (printer asked for C5), the
location of the printed address etc. correspond to a hypothetical
printout on A4, cut to the C5 dimensions.

[Bug 235038] Re: System crashes when visiting a certain site.

2009-01-19 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I've upgraded to 64bit 8.10 and OpenJDK with IcedTea plugin doesn't give
this issue. I couldn't test with Sun's JRE since there's no 64bit
support from their plugin

[Bug 318722] [NEW] Logitech USB PS/2 mouse is mistaken for Elantech Touchpad

2009-01-19 Thread Sergey Romanov
Public bug reported:

My Logitech PS/2 USB mouse on PS/2 adapter is mistaken by 2.6.28 kernel
for Elantech Touchpad

Relevant kernel patch: http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/319/

I'm currently using a workaround suggested here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=482408

That is to add line

options psmouse proto=imps

into /etc/modprobe.d/options

and it works.

I've attached lshal output before and after the workaround.

Thanks,

Sergey Romanov
