[Bug 318276] Re: serious xserver-xorg problem in 8.10

No valuable data from original debug attempt (see or ignore below). I
will now try for a postmortem backtrace.

[Bug 318248] Re: [Jaunty].xsession-errors filled up with OKs

2009-01-19 Thread Tobias Stegmann
I have already added my .xsession-errors, see:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21292497/.xsession-errors
I add the one from today to this comment.

I open my erros-file with gedit, unfocus the gedit window, click around
in random windows, e.g. firefox or nautilus, go back to gedit and have
to reload the file and there are some OKs more. Just minimizing and
maximizing gedit also adds one, sometimes two.

Any idea?

[Bug 243130] Re: /etc/fonts/conf.d/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf, line 17: invalid constant used : lcdfilterlegacy

2009-01-19 Thread Sebastian Keller
I still have the following entry in my .xsession-errors:
Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/11-lcd-filter-lcddefault.conf, line 9:
invalid constant used : lcddefault
Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf, line 17:

However it appears there only once, at login time.

[Bug 309283] Re: Window Manager window default size is small

2009-01-19 Thread Charlie Kravetz
Quote from Xfce Bugzilla
/quote/

  --- Comment #1 From Olivier Fourdan 2008-12-26 11:48:00 UTC
(-) [reply] ---

Depends which branch, for 4.4 it's a wontfix, and for 4.6 key themes are no
longer, so this gives sufficient space for the shortcut.

Or course, this is locale dependendent and if someone comes with a translation
that uses very long shortcut definitions, that won't fit, but there is no real
solution to that.

[Bug 317790] Re: unable to detect type of stream

2009-01-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 316872] Re: Patched grub will not boot from EXT4 partition

2009-01-19 Thread Vladimir Buell
Colin, result is the same.

I've noticed that files stage1/2 on my machine are too old

  /boot/grub/e2fs-stage1_5 8660 modified:30 jan 2008 12:00:38
  /boot/grub/stage2 110292 modified:30 jan 2008 12:00:40

I suppose that it's not ok and these these files should be changed in
grub...-ubuntu47. Right?

Another strange thing is that file /boot/grub/installed-version contains
0.97-29ubuntu4.

[Bug 74279] Re: error importing photos in ptp mode

2009-01-19 Thread Richard Wilbur
I tried f-spot under an updated Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex install with same
laptop (iBook G4) and same camera (Canon PowerShot G5) and it works just fine!
I'm not using 8.10 for everyday because it has issues resuming from
Suspend--pretty important for a travelling laptop. So,
f-spot v0.5.0.3 works
f-spot v0.4.3.1 fails

As 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is a Long-Term Support version and f-spot is the
default application when I plug in my camera, I think this fix would be
a useful one to backport. (gThumb works like a charm in both releases.)

By the way, how do I set gThumb to be the default application to handle
a USB camera? Neither Preferred Applications nor Multimedia Systems
Selector offer to configure this option, and neither gThumb nor f-spot
have a preferences setting to become the default USB camera application.

Good, so much for that (see below). I am now going for a complete system
backup and apt-get remove of xdm and wdm. Then I try the ulimit -c once
more, but I have my doubts. After that it is 9.04, any ideas?

[Bug 313175] Re: Toolbar crashes frequenlty on ubuntu 8.04

2009-01-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 293930] Re: Text drag and drop causes system freeze

2009-01-19 Thread syockit
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 279654 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279654

This is a new feature in firefox-3.0, which renders the bulk of the selected
text as an image that moves along with your cursor as you drag it. Sadly, due
to some bug (maybe in firefox, because in firefox-3.1, it works like a charm!),
it is not compatible with kwin compositing. To disable this feature and turn
back to the good old icon style, edit the following in about:config:
  nglayout.enable_drag_images
Make sure it is set to false.

Since the bug was missed in firefox 3.0, you probably won't see it fixed
on mozilla, so someone would have to provide a patch

[Bug 318797] [NEW] window goes away when i click the minimize button

2009-01-19 Thread Naresh
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version 8.04 Hardy
The Maximize and Close buttons on every window works, but the minimize does not.
I notice this problem about 2 weeks ago.
When I click the minimize button the window goes away. I'm not sure if the
application is closed or still running because the more windows I minimize, the
slower the computer gets.
Once when I tried restarting and those windows which i minimized(the ones that
had vanished) were revealed, this only happened once.

[Bug 210725] Re: Please include RaLink RT2860 driver

2009-01-19 Thread Alex Krastelev
Unfortunately RT2860 isn't yet supported out of box by Jaunty Jackalope
9.04 alpha 3, but the latest driver from debian source tree works on my
eee 901. The installation procedure:

- Download rt2860-source_1.8.0.0-3_all.deb from
http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/rt2860-source/download
$ wget
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/r/rt2860-source/rt2860-source_1.8.0.0-3_all.deb

- install source .deb:
$ sudo dpkg -i rt2860-source_1.8.0.0-3_all.deb

- compile
$ sudo aptitude install debhelper module-assistant
$ sudo module-assistant auto-install  rt2860

- install the module
$ sudo modprobe rt2860sta
this should activate the new wireless interface without reboot

- to load the module automatically on each reboot, add rt2860sta to
/etc/modules

[Bug 316414] Re: [i965] After leaving fullscreen, Intrepid draws only wallpaper, mouse cursor, and nothing more.

2009-01-19 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
No, I think a regular upgrade should do it. I use apt-get, and `apt-get
update; apt-get upgrade` (or possibly `apt-get dist-upgrade`) is then
enough. I guess the same is true with synaptic. This will replace your
current driver (and limdrm-stuff which the driver depends upon).

PS: You don't necessarily need to _install_ the alpha, you should be
able to reproduce the issue running the LiveCD.

[Bug 316872] Re: Patched grub will not boot from EXT4 partition

Vladimir,

You are correct - the stage1/2 fimages are way too old - hence the
issue. The older grub will detect ext4 but will not be able to read any
files on an ext4 filesystem.

I suggest re-running grub-install - I believe this will re-install the
latest versions of stage1_5 and stage2 etc..

[Bug 288859] Re: Need Pipe-A quirk for 855 and earlier chipsets (like 1014:0513)

2009-01-19 Thread Colin Watson
Phil: the thing we need here is confirmation that the package still
works on hardy, and actually fixes the problem. The reason we put
changes into -proposed is so that they can be tested; without comments
from people who've tried them, whether with good or bad results, we
can't assume that they're OK. (Bug 267570 has the same issue, and Martin
asked roughly the same thing on 27th December, with no response so far.)

before for other uses.

[Bug 292568] Re: xorg fails to start

2009-01-19 Thread Markus Schöpflin
Just FYI, the following procedure gave me a usable driver for
SiliconMotion:

Download http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
siliconmotion/snapshot/xf86-video-siliconmotion-
deb2f845dd370ba819d02cb21b8a481827497af6.tar.bz2 and extract to some
local directory.

This is the latest version before release 1.7 of the driver that still
compiled for me out of the box on Ubuntu 8.10, and there are no
functional changes between this version and the 1.7 release.

 sudo apt-get install xorg-dev
cd directory of new driver code
 ./autogen.sh
 make

This results in a new driver in ./src/.libs/siliconmotion_drv.so which
doesn't give me the 'AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0' error.

Maybe this is of use for somebody.

[Bug 318797] Re: window goes away when i click the minimize button

2009-01-19 Thread Naresh
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu version 8.04 Hardy
The Maximize and Close buttons on every window works, but the minimize does
not.
I notice this problem about 2 weeks ago.
When I click the minimize button the window goes away. I'm not sure if the
application is closed or still running because the more windows I minimize, the
slower the computer gets.
Once when I tried restarting and those windows which i minimized(the ones
that had vanished) were revealed, this only happened once.
+
+ Update
+ The applications are still running somewhere out of sight.
+ I found a program in synaptic call gPS, it shows me the programs that are
running.
+ When I open a program like Texteditor and refresh gPS it show it, when I
close Texteditor and refresh gPS it goes away from the list in gPS.
+ When I minimize the window vanishes but gPS still show it running.

[Bug 318809] [NEW] frequent segmentation faults - segfault - gedit, nautilus, python

2009-01-19 Thread alperyilmaz
Public bug reported:

$lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

Package information: I don't know which package exactly but I'm
suspecting it's python related.

My observation: When I have a text file open in gedit, after a while, when I
was working on other things, I notice that gedit crashed. No error messages is
given and it's random, meaning that it does not happen when I actually do
something - open, save, close, etc - with gedit. Similar pattern is observed
with pidgin as well. But, gedit crashes were way more frequent than that of
pidgin. Then I noticed in log files segfault lines indicating the crashes of
gedit, pidgin and others. I'm suspecting it's python related since those
softwares utilize python.
Below is the list of all other software that had segfault entry in log. The
number indicates the number of segfault occurence per software.

$ zcat /var/log/*.gz  | grep -i segfault | perl -n -e '/\] (.*)\[/;
print $1;print \n;' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr

 96 gedit
 14 nautilus
 13 lat_mem_rd
  7 pidgin
  6 python
  2 VirtualBox
  2 metacity

Do you aggree this is python problem?

[Bug 260270] Re: KDE 4.1 welcome sound on login is stopped prematurely

2009-01-19 Thread Christian A. Reiter
C'mon, this bug is known in Ubuntu since August 08, in KDE since
February 08, and can be fixed by 8 lines of Code, and the code is there
as a diff.

I know the update policy, but rules are made for helping us, we (people)
are not made for serving rules.

This bug is bugging each single user that is logging into KDE4.1, ergo each
user of Kubuntu Intrepid.
Look at debian, they are stumbling over their own feet because of policy
rigidness - and slowly they are learning.
It's no security thing - but it is evident - IMHO better software has to be
working flawlessly equally to it's safety (which often is theoretical.)

Greets, Christian

Hi,

1. forgotten: IP, gateway, mask, DNS and the method (after restarted,
Ubuntu shows again Automatic (DHCP). Both of checkboxes are kept.

2. Interfaces before (default):

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Interfaces after:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet static
address 10.1.1.102
netmask 255.0.0.0
gateway 10.1.1.1

Auto eth0

Strangely, with this change the connection name also changed from Auto
eth0 to Wired Connection 1. Maybe if the connection name is changed,
Ubuntu save the settings without having to change Interfaces. A fact to
be analyzed.

2009-01-19 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Leonardo, that is interesting, since rad_sci_guy has a pretty old
graphics chipset (i830) and you have a very new one (Q45). It probably
means that the bug isn't really in the intel driver. This may be why
rad_sci_guy has seen it reported for the ati-driver. Probably, the same
bug has been reported in other packages.

PS: It is also a possibility that there are multiple bugs which give the
same behaviour, but my gut feeling for this is that it is the same

[Bug 318805] [NEW] Missing pata_cs5535 module for geode based controllers

2009-01-19 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

The netinst (and I believe alternate) CD is missing the pata_cs5535 ATA
driver which is used in the ION 503 and rebadged Viglen MPC-L devices.
This prevents the installer from being able to 'see' the local hard
disk, and this makes it difficult to install.

I plucked the pata_cs5535.ko from
/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/kernel/drivers/ata/pata_cs5535.ko from
another machine that was already running 2.6.27-7 (the version of the
kernel on the netinst iso I used) and ran depmod -a. I then inserted the
module and the disk sparked into life, whereupon I could complete the
install.

Could pata_cs5535.ko please be added to the next build of the iso
images?

** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
