I tested the Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha 3 (desktop CD x86).
I tried clean install.
Install setting (manual partition)
/dev/sda5 is /boot as EXT4.
/dev/sda6 is / as EXT4.
/dev/sda7 is swap.
The grub was able to boot the kernel from /boot (EXT4).

Patched grub will not boot from EXT4 partition
I just compiled a generic 2.6.28.1 kernel with the same options as the
ubuntu package, but without watchdog support. It boots fine.

I've upgraded to 64bit 8.10 and OpenJDK with IcedTea plugin doesn't give
this issue. I couldn't test with Sun's JRE since there's no 64bit
support from their plugin
