wdm made it worse (8.10).
I got 2 pid's for wdm and 1 for something else. I was prompted for a new gdm
session, which I opened and am currently working from. Please look at
.xsession-errors. I will now read through the Xorg debug wiki and see if I can
debug. Then I kill gdm and try

I've re-tested with the following:
Jaunty amd64 Alpha3, installed with ext3:
/dev/sda1 /boot (ext3)
/dev/sda5 swap
/dev/sda6 / (ext3)
upgraded to ext4 and it works fine.
Vladimir: I did not add rootfstype=ext4 to grub menu.lst. What happens

cups prepares and prints on different page sizes
Same problem here with DELL Optiplex 960.
X gets stuck after resuming from screensaver, after a log period of
inactivity (no keyb/mouse input), mostly after a night long. Ctrl+F2,
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and Ctrl+Alt+Del don't help. Pushing the power
button, it shutdowns gracefully.

I am back in my original (wdm) session due to:

Firefox and gedit work file closed down. All firefox tabs were restored

( according to wikipedia some eee pc's use atheros chipsets and some use
