I tried f-spot under an updated Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex install with same
laptop (iBook G4) and same camera (Canon PowerShot G5) and it works just fine!

update; apt-get upgrade` (or possibly `apt-get dist-upgrade`) is then

You are correct - the stage1/2 fimages are way too old - hence the
issue. The older grub will detect ext4 but will not be able to read any
files on an ext4 filesystem.
I suggest re-running grub-install - I believe this will re-install the
latest versions of stage1_5 and stage2 etc..

Leonardo, that is interesting, since rad_sci_guy has a pretty old
graphics chipset (i830) and you have a very new one (Q45). It probably
means that the bug isn't really in the intel driver. This may be why
rad_sci_guy has seen it reported for the ati-driver. Probably, the same
