I have an Intel 945GM. The problem occurs for me while using both
Jaunty's and Karmic's kernel. Upgrading xorg-xserver-video-intel to

I removed firefox from task since this is not a firefox bug. Firefox
will crash before it brings down a whole system. I dont know what you
mean by log off but im assuiomg you get gdm/kdm.xdm

The trick proposed by David Travis worked for me though looking at it it does
make sense (no reason to mute Front Mic at 100 % level) ; now I can use Skype
and Audacity with a microphone ; all this is not really satisfactory ; here are
