I can confirm this bug. I encountered this on a jaunty install fully
updated. I had never used banshee before (hence didn't have any
database). I was trying it first time when I read that it may replace
rhythmbox as default player in karmic.

I found a workaround by running the following:
sudo dpkg --force-all -r byobu
This kills the package forcibly. Then I ran
sudo aptitude install byobu
to get to the newest version. This appears to fix the issue. I can now
install other packages and it doesn't complain about byobu anymore.

No this is not the case. In most cases, the problem manifests itself
within 30 seconds of connecting to the remote PC. ie. It might freeze on
the logon screen or halfway after I opened my 1st app. Please note that

I want to add this detail. The File lenght on the Target Share was not
an issue. There were files in the same folder with longer filenames. But
some Filenames were truncated to 17 chars. Other Filenames survived with
'special' characters in the name. The bug must be in the deep logic and
may not be

editor dialog, but Inkscape crash.
Worked well with Ubuntu 8.10. Development versions of Inkscape are not affected

Which protocol do you use?
VNC use port 5900 by default.
You can monitor network traffic by using "netstat".
There are other vnc viewer like vinagre or xvnc4viewer, I have never try
(today, I have a single computer).
So you could know if problems comes from network/vnc server or from vnc client.

I was using Consolas 8 in xchat-gnome, and other apps that use a fixed
width font. gnome-terminal, which I use regularly with Consolas 8, does
not exhibit this problem - ever, even when using irssi (another irc
application). Pidgin does not use the fixed width font, so I don't see
this issue.
