[Bug 392826] [NEW] dhcp3-server is launched before NetworkManager and thus doesn't find interfaces
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dhcp3-server Hi! I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (upgraded from 8.10, in case that matters). I recently switched from using /etc/network/interfaces to NetworkManager. I'm also running a DHCP server on this machine. Problem: In /etc/rc2.d the start link for dhcp3-server ist prefixed with S40... and the one for NetworkManager with S50... Thus dhcp3-server is launched before NetworkManager was able bring all interfaces up, which leaves the DHCP server non-functional since it cannot find the interfaces it was configured to listen on. ** Affects: dhcp3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- dhcp3-server is launched before NetworkManager and thus doesn't find interfaces https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392826 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dhcp3 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Hi, I tried to recreate an environment as close to yours as possible. [Bug 392795] Re: Some characters always display highlighted on VGA console.
** Description changed: Binary package hint: usplash Ubuntu 8.10 Linux 2.6.27-14-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 15 18:59:16 UTC 2009 linux-image-2.6.27-14-generic, Version: 2.6.27-14.33 usplash, Version 0.5.25 After booting a recent kernel with usplash (splash) and no frame buffer (nofb), when using 512-character console fonts (like Uni1-Fixed16), glyphs in the second half of the font are always displayed highlighted (that is, bright white, not dull white). This can best be seen by switching to the console immediately after booting and running showconsolefont. (If you have not patched the kernel to fix the font corruption issue with the 512-character fonts, you may need to first run setfont Uni1-Fixed16 to see all of the characters.) Some background: Normally, in text mode, the VGA hardware can only display 256 unique characters, since only 8 bits are available for each character in text memory. In order to display 512 unique characters, a bit must be stolen from the attribute memory, which normally is used for the character's foreground and background colors. The bit that is stolen is normally used to define the brightness of the character's foreground color. In fact, thanks to this bug, we see that it still can affect the character's brightness even after it has been stolen. In order to get all 512 characters to be displayed at the same intensity, the kernel clears a bit in the VGA's Color Plane Enable Register to disable the corresponding bit plane. Now when a binary (bright white) is passed to the color palette, only 0111 (dull white) gets through. At boot time, console-setup is run very early, even before usplash. If the font loaded by console-setup is a 512-character font, the kernel clears the necessary bit, as discussed above. Then usplash runs, switches to a graphics mode, does its thing, then exits. When it exits it puts the console back into text mode and restores the font to the VGA memory, but it never restores the VGA registers. Most of the VGA registers are set up fine, just by switching to text mode, but not the one we are interested in here. Oddly enough, usplash does save the VGA registers -- it just never restores them. It did up until a few years ago, but that was changed. I am including a couple of patches for consideration. Either one should fix the problem. One patch, restore_all_regs.patch, simply restores the code that restores all of the VGA registers. The other patch, restore_cpe_reg.patch, restores only the Color Plane Enable Register -- the one register that relates to this bug. I think the first patch is probably the better patch, and could make usplash a little more robust by possibly preventing other bugs from cropping up in the future due to registers that were not restored. On the other hand, there is something to be said for making the smallest change necessary to fix a bug, and thus reduce the chances of creating others, which is why I've included the second patch. This problem is mentioned by Uwe Geuder in a comment to LP:355057: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/355057/comments/12 Reports for other bugs that also happen to mention a similar problem which may or may not be related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303561 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159053 Note that this problem does not occur when booting the 8.10 Live CD. This is only because there was a problem with an initramfs script which prevented the font from being loaded before usplash was run. That problem was fixed last November. So you need a kernel newer than that to test this. To reproduce: 1. grep CODESET /etc/default/console-setup 2. If CODESET is not a 512-character codeset (like Uni1, Uni2, or Uni3), run sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup to change it. 3. Ensure that the /boot/initrd... file that you boot with was the one that was updated by dpkg-reconfigure (it isn't always) 4. Boot using the nofb and splash options. (You have a recent kernel, right?) 5. Wait for system to fully boot up, then switch to a text console and log-in. 6. showconsolefont 7. Ignore the garbage between the columns of characters -- that's another bug. 8. If the 256 characters on the right are missing or trashed, run setfont Uni1-Fixed16 - 9. If the 256 characters on the right are brighter than the 256 on the right, + 9. If the 256 characters on the right are brighter than the 256 on the left, you have this bug. -- Some characters always display highlighted on VGA console. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392795 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 392798] [NEW] [karmic] devicekit-power broken by 008-1 to 008-1ubuntu1 update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: devicekit-power After the update in karmic of devicekit-power from 008-1 to 008-1ubuntu1, the devkit-power daemon does not seem to get started. The symptoms are that gnome-power-manager no longer knows I have a battery (it just shows the plug icon no matter what my laptop's state is, rather than correctly showing the battery charge and AC adapter state as before). Also, from the command line, I get: $ devkit-power (devkit-power:6225): devkit-power-gobject-WARNING **: Couldn't enumerate devices: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) and $ ps ax|grep -e 'dev.*pow' 6241 pts/0S+ 0:00 grep -e dev.*pow (Ie no daemon gets activated by dbus). AFAICT, the only change from 008-1 to 008-1ubuntu1 was the addition of the pm-powersave.patch, which (aside from the fact that the command returned from g_strdup_printf() is not freed in dkp_daemon_set_pmutils_powersave() and hence leaked) looks fairly harmless to me. So I'm not sure what the real issue is, but something definitely is wrong, since downgrading devicekit-power back to 008-1 definitely fixes things for me. [Bug 376067] Re: [karmic] Please upgrade nvidia-glx-185 to 185.18.14 version
This bug was fixed in the package nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 - 185.18.14-0ubuntu1 --- nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (185.18.14-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low * New upstream release (LP: #376067): - Fixed a Xinerama drawable resource management problem that can cause GLXBadDrawable errors in certain cases, such as when Wine applications are run. (LP: #344721) - Fixed XineramaQueryScreens to return 0 screens instead of 1 screen with the geometry of screen 0 when XineramaIsActive returns false. This conforms to the Xinerama manual page and fixes an interaction problem with Compiz when there is more than one X screen. - Moved kernel module loading earlier in the X driver's initialization, to facilitate more graceful fallbacks if the kernel module cannot be loaded. Removed the LoadKernelModule X configuration option. - Added support for new horizontal interlaced and checkerboard passive stereo modes. - Fixed an OpenGL driver crash while running Bibble 5. - Fixed a DisplayPort interaction problem with power management suspend/resume events. - Fixed occasional X driver memory management performance problems when a composite manager is running. (LP: 294925) - Fixed a bug with VT-switching or mode-switching while using Compiz; the bug could lead to a corrupted desktop (e.g., a white screen) or in the worst case an X server crash. - Fixed a bug that could cause GPU errors in some cases while driving Quadro SDI products. - Fixed a several second hang when VT-switching while OpenGL stereo applications were running on pre-G80 Quadro GPUs. - Added support for multiple swap group members on G80 and later Quadro GPUs. - Fixed the behavior of the NV_CTRL_FRAMELOCK_SYNC_DELAY NV-CONTROL attribute on Quadro G-Sync II. - Fixed a problem with Quadro SDI where transitioning from clone mode to OpenGL mode would fail. - Fixed VDPAU to eliminate some cases of corruption when decoding H.264 video containing field-coded reference frames on G84, G86, G92, G94, G96, or GT200 GPUs. Such streams are commonly found in DVB broadcasts. - Slightly improved the performance of the VDPAU noise reduction algorithm. - Enhanced VDPAU to validate whether overlay usage is supported by the current hardware configuration, and to automatically fall back to the blit-based presentation queue if required. - Fixed error checking in VdpVideoMixerRender, to reject calls that specify more layers than the VdpMixer was created with. - Modified VDPAU's VDPAU_DEBUG code to emit a complete backtrace on all platforms, not just on 32-bit Linux. - Improved interaction between VDPAU and PowerMizer; appropriate performance levels should now be chosen for video playback of all standard resolutions on all supported GPUs. - Fixed a bug in VDPAU that sometimes caused display preemption when the VdpDecoderCreate function failed. - Fixed a potential segfault in the VDPAU trace library, triggered by a multi-threaded application creating a new VdpDevice in one thread, at the same time that another thread detected display preemption. - Improved compatibility with recent Linux kernels. - OpenOffice and Skype no longer have flickering buttons on mouseover when compiz is enabled. [Bug 285392] Re: Softreset failed (device not ready)
I have come across this, and it prevents my system from booting altogether, in Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 (x86_64) My System is as follows: Motherboard = GA-MA770-DS3 rev 1.0 CPU = Athlon X2 3800+ HDD Configuration: Root is mounted on the IDE drive /home is mounted on a RAID 5 array (5x 500GB)spanning across the 4 SATA ports on board, plus 1 of the 2 ports on a Silicon Image SATA expansion card. I found the bug when preparing to install a new CPU into the system - I upgraded the bios from F2 to F7. Up until installing BIOS F7, my system was running flawlessly, only rebooting when there was a kernel update pushed through the Ubuntu updates. I am now systematically booting all the BIOSs. F7 = Error as seen in thread, plus may (different) kernel panics - I have photos of some of them. F6 = softreset error but boots normally F5 = softreset error but boots normally F4 = not tested F3 = not tested F2 = softreset error but boots normally I have tested firmware F7 using the following settings in BIOS: * Native IDE * Legacy IDE * SATA - AHCI I have also tried with kernel parameter all_generic_ide but has also refused to boot (although in this case there are different kernel panics) When testing with BIOS F7, I have tried booting with various old kernels, without success: * 2.6.28-13-generic * 2.6.28-11-generic * 2.6.24-22-generic * 2.6.22-14-generic I have tried booting from the following Live CDs * Fedora 11 i686, both with and without all_generic_ide * Fedora 11 x86_64, both with and without all_generic_ide Unfortunately, until I can find a successful workaround, I cannot install my new precessor, as only the F7 bios supports it :( I have various photos of the stack traces and errors, but I wasn't too vigilent in noting down exactly what I tried for each photo. Regressing back to BIOS F2 from F7 fixes the problem. Load BIOS F7 exhibits the problem again - this seems quite repeatable. Hope this helps. [Bug 392815] [NEW] Ubuntu Thunderbird's Contact List crash in Romanian
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird Hello, I am running Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 + all online updates. I am running Thunderbird for email (stock package). When system is set to Romanian language (via the graphical utility in the System menu), Thunderbird's interaface will become Romanian, too. In this situation, Thunderbird's Contact List won't allow inserting new contacts (vCards); the error message, written in red, is: !DOCTYPE overlay SYSTEM chrome://messenger/locale/addresbook/abcardOverlay.dtd Behaviour becomes normal if system is set back to English. That seems somewhat logical, since no official Thunderbird 2.x exists for Romanian language yet. It is not very clear for me where the present localization of Ubuntu's Thunderbird comes from (if there is no upstream Romanian Thunderbird 2.x, localization is done at Ubuntu packaging level ?!) Steps to reproduce: 1. Install stock Ubuntu 9.04, including Thunderbird 2. Put system's interface in Romanian (via the System menu standard utility) 3. Open Thunderbird's Contact List and try to insert a new contact - one will get the above error message 4. Put system's interface in English 5. Open Thunderbird's Contact List and try to insert a new contact - it will perform normally Suggestions for solving: 1. Until Thunderbird 3.x is not available in Ubuntu, setting system's interface in Romanian would let Thunderbird's interface in English. Thunderbird 3.x WILL include Romanian localization (upstream); actually, the current Thunderbird 3.x beta works great in Fedora. OR 2. Already include Thunderbird 3.x beta in Ubuntu, via online updates. Observations: I didn't verify it, but I'll bet the described situation affects ALL languages that have no official Thunderbird 2.x AND use a non-US set of characters. [Bug 76924] Re: non-functioning hotkeys on Vaio TX2
The crt key works fine now but except of that nothing has changed at least with the Jaunty Live CD. So the problems are the AV MODE, volume up, volume down, magnify and eject keys. First three most likely because there is no kernel support for them. They are completely dead. -- non-functioning hotkeys on Vaio TX2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/76924 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 392816] [NEW] no display of Launcher description when they have a character
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfce4-panel Hello, I'm using Xubuntu Jaunty 9.04 x86_64 version. The bug is in the Launcher applet provided by xfce4-panel dr...@08:33:02 [0] 0:~$ apt-cache policy xfce4-panel xfce4-panel: Installé : 4.6.0-1ubuntu1 Candidat : 4.6.0-1ubuntu1 Table de version : *** 4.6.0-1ubuntu1 0 500 http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status I've created a new launcher with the following parameters : name = GCStar OAV Dessins Animes Description = Liste de OAV Dessins Animés I was expecting that when I will place the cursor over the icon of the Launcher, I will get a tooltip with the name and the description. But I'm just getting the icon in the tooltip, without any text, unlike the other launcher created. If I change the name and the description in order to remove the character like : name = GCStar OAV et Dessins Animes Description = Liste de OAV et Dessins Animés Both are displayed in the tooltip. If a remains in one of the name or description field of the launcher, only the icon is displayed in the tooltip. Adding a backslash before the (for escaping it like in shell script), have no effect. To illustrate the problem, I made some screenshots : With the bug : http://logicielsutiles.free.fr/xfce4-panel-bug.png Without the bug : http://logicielsutiles.free.fr/xfce4-panel-no-bug.png ** Affects: xfce4-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- no display of Launcher description when they have a character https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392816 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 391279] Re: [karmic] Please update verlihub to 0.9.8e version
I just took a look at the current version in Debian, and it's to be removed soon due to lack of maintenance there (see http://bugs.debian.org/529817 for details). [Bug 314928] Re: [i915GM] MTRR entry gets removed when restarting xorg - causes corruption on ttys
** Description changed: - When comparing /proc/mtrr of intrepid and current jaunty i noticed there - is an entry missing. + [Impact] + This bug is one of a set of fairly serious issues that afflict -intel users on Jaunty. The problem is that X and the kernel are miscommunicating about MTRR's, and X ends up deleting ones it shouldn't. + + The user-visible effect of this is poor performance in video playback, + such as very choppy flash video. + + [Solution] + The solution for this issue is composed by a kernel patch and a xorg patch, both from the -intel upstream developers. Both of these patches are upstream, and currently included as of the 2.6.30 kernel and -intel 2.7.99.x in Karmic, which does not exhibit the bug. For Jaunty both of these need backported. + + Kernel patch: http://people.ubuntu.com/~apw/lp314928-jaunty/0001 + -UBUNTU-SAUCE-drm-i915-Set-up-an-MTRR-covering-the-GT.patch + + -intel patch: + http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28453154/122_dont_fixup_mtrrs_in_gem_config.patch + + The kernel patch sets the MTRR correctly and the Xorg patch assures that + reloading xorg doesn't wipe it. + + It's not necessary to roll out both patches simultaneously, but both + linux and -intel need their patches in order to make the bug be + resolved. + + [Test Case] + 0. Verify flash video playback is relatively okay + 1. Note contents of /proc/mtrr + 2. Restart xorg + 3. Note contents of /proc/mtrr again, and how it has changed since #1 + 4. See that flash video playback is laggy + + [Regression Potential] + Reasonably low. This change has been reviewed and tested upstream and in karmic for quite a while, and the specific patches being proposed in this SRU have been provided for testers via a PPA and verified to solve the bug. Due to the nature of the patch, it's not possible to prove definitively that it can't cause regression, so it would be advisable to test this thoroughly in jaunty-proposed. + + [Original Report] + When comparing /proc/mtrr of intrepid and current jaunty i noticed there is an entry missing. Intrepid: reg00: base=0x ( 0MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1 reg01: base=0x4000 (1024MB), size= 512MB: write-back, count=1 reg02: base=0x5f70 (1527MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1 reg03: base=0x5f80 (1528MB), size= 8MB: uncachable, count=1 reg04: base=0xb000 (2816MB), size= 256MB: write-combining, count=1 Jaunty: reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back reg01: base=0x04000 ( 1024MB), size= 512MB, count=1: write-back reg02: base=0x05f70 ( 1527MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable reg03: base=0x05f80 ( 1528MB), size=8MB, count=1: uncachable So I tried adding it back by using: sudo -s echo base=0xb000 size=0x1000 type=write-combining /proc/mtrr I have noticed a few things after adding that entry: - glxgears is now about twice as fast (I know its not a real benchmark ;) - 2D Performance does not seem affected however (just testing a bit with x11perf/gtkperf) - it fixes the corruption on the ttys (bug 312677) I also noticed that this entry gets removed everytime xorg gets restarted. But I'm not sure with all the recent changes in memory management if that entry should still be there or not. - lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.2 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 3 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #4 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev d3) 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.3 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 03) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) SMBus
