[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups
@ Jordan.sc #135 I cannot, nor am I authorized to do firmware upgrades at the local coffee shop at the airport and at my place of business And generally these locations have neutered DNS already anyway, eg they only allow HTTP/HTTPS and generally only after authenticating (after being hijacked using DNS to their portal thingy). These locations (coffeeshops, hotels, airports, other generic hotspots etc etc) don't provide true internet anyway and are thus breaking already way too much protocol wise that there is nothing you can do about it. The only thing you can do in those locations is to VPN out if you want to resolve that problem. In the cases where DNS requests are not blocked (like in hotels and coffeeshops), you can setup pdns-recursor and use 127.0.0.1 in your resolv.conf -- [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/417757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 478097] Re: help.ubuntu.com claims to be XHTML 1.0 Transitional but is not
Huh, how is youtube.com relevant to this? That's like saying if Windows can have broken feature X, then so can we. There are two issues here: 1. The page contradicts itself, by claiming to be XHTML 1.0 Transitional and not being XHTML 1.0 Transitional. An easy way to fix this is of course is to just get rid of the DOCTYPE. That still won't solve the bigger issue: 2. The page is not [X]HTML standard compliant. Ubuntu should set an example by following web standards, and not adopt the fix in 1 above. As I'm experiencing this bug too, on an xps m1330n, i did a little bit of research. I tried to follow the walkthrough in post #7 but that failed, as I couldn't change the mic input. I then reverted alsa-utils and alsa base to the first karmic version (1.0.18 for both of them) and, while the mic was not functioning straight away, I followed the forementioned walkthrough which resulted in a **functioning** mic. It therefore seems an alsa related bug. [Bug 453579] Re: in-place corruption of large files *without fsck or reboot* reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4
Improperly rebooting runs the risk of breaking your system on *any* filesystem. Sorry, but this is not true imho. I have never had a similar problem with ext3. Yes, there are some file systems like XFS which just deletes the data of a whole file if the computer crashes or is restarted but I guess the goal should be especially with a journaling file system to prevent errors like this. Not to mention that the size of the file is zero with XFS so you don't assume that everything is fine. Like I said there is no problem that after a hard reboot some shortly changed data is lost but this has to be diagnosed and dealt with through the file system so that no corrupt files are saved without even realizing it. -- in-place corruption of large files *without fsck or reboot* reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/453579 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 448670] Re: Gramps crashes after some minutes
I'm the gramps developper which include GeoView in gramps. Geoview try to load libwebkit or gtkmozembed to show the maps. If we have none of these kits, Geoview is not loaded. If we have one kit, we load the kit available and if we have the two kits, webkit is used. If you don't need the maps for the moment, you can disallow geoview in the .ini file $HOME/.gramps/gramps.ini or gramps32.ini You remove 'GeoView' in the data-views variable. This is for the work around. Normally, gramps must run correctly. Now, for your problem, I think there is a problem during libwebkit and python-webkit installation. [Bug 474948] Re: Missing dependency libx264.so.65 on amd64 platform
I also had much the same issue when I updated my mythbuntu 9.04 installation to 9.10, however it is not limited to mediatomb, it also affects other packages that depend on libx264, it also happened to me with mplayer, I couldn't get it resolved properly (linking would have worked but I don't like that approach) so I got out a spare hard drive and did a clean install of mythbuntu 9.10, the error no longer happens. [Bug 478178] [NEW] Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) Empathy 2.28.1.1 Since I like to have my messenger clients running whenever I'm online I wanted to set that to happen automaticaly. So here's what I tried: * I looked in the preferences of Empathy, and appart from the confusing entry Automatically connect on startup described in bug #322314 there is nothing about connecting. * I looked under 'System Preferences Startup applications', there is no entry for Empathy so Itry to make one... * The file browser starts in my home directory so I assume there's a good reason for that and try to find an entry there for empathy. Sadly there's no entry there called empathy. * Luckily I know a bit about this Ubuntu thing and the Gnome Desktop so I look into the .gnome2 directory. Finally a directory called Empathy. But sadly that only has log files in it. * Thinking I'm a bit savvy I navigate to /usr/share/empathy ... but again there is no file I can point to to start empathy ... * Now I'm getting annoyed, nothing useful in /usr/share/gnome/autostart * Nothing in /usr/share/gnome2 * /usr/bin/empathy looks promising - maybe I'll be lucky this time. [Bug 434511] Re: ALC861 : Mic does not work after installation
You probably need a probe_mask parameter for your install. Already did that, probe_mask=8 disables the modem and brings back the sound (read above). It does not help reactivating the mic though, but that can be achieved with position_fix=1. And especially the second flag doesn't make any sense to me. I know (vaguely at least) what it does, but I can't understand why it is only neccessary on the installed system!? And also I can't understand why the recording quality is much worse within the live session (using position_fix=1)... That's definitely a linux issue, then. I'd love to read more about what you think about this! How are the symptoms described above explainable with race conditions? You need a pretty thorough understanding of bios and linux at least. Maybe even more than that. Sometimes it seems that you actually have to be either an alsa, kernel and bios developer to really understand what's going wrong with your sound. Actually, I have a pretty good understanding of linux imho (I'm a full-time developer with some experience on writing device drivers, though rarely doing kernel hacking), but I must admit that I don't know much about sound drivers and obviously wasn't able to fix the sound myself. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio After hibernate/suspend the screen goes black, but nothing more happens to indicate any power down, fan keeps running, heat is produced ... When I press a key I imediately get back to the password dialog. The pm-suspend.log tells me that pacmd is missing and the power down is thus inhibited. I installed pulseaudio-utils and that fixed the problem. Conclusion: pulseaudio-utils should be included in the standard upgrade (or is it just my upgrade that failed?) ** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- after upgrade to Karmic: missing pulseaudio-utils inhibits hibernate/sleep https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478182 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 445367] Re: os-prober entries do not use correct /boot device
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 462961 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462961 The other bug report was filed by the desktop team technical lead. I'm afraid it's unavoidable that bug reports from the developers are going to get attention much more quickly, since they can escalate such bugs directly without the need of a bug triager to process the bug first. Since becoming an Ubuntu developer is probably not the sort of solution you had in mind, here are some other ways to get more attention on your bugs: - Participate in ISO testing before the milestones - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO - and include links to your bugs in your ISO test reports. - If you think a bug has gone unnoticed and should be a higher priority for the release, try talking to the developers directly on IRC (#ubuntu-devel on irc.freenode.net). - Yes, a dfferent bug summary might also have helped. E.g., discussing the high-level consequence of the bug, as was done in bug #462961. Hope that helps - it obviously would have been better if we could have fixed this bug weeks earlier when you first noticed it! -- os-prober entries do not use correct /boot device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445367 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 367743] Re: Attempt to purchase album from Rhythmbox Magnatune store fails.
Raf and Pedro is partly right. Magnatune has stopped processing credit cards due to online fraud experienced by their credit card payment processor (see http://blogs.magnatune.com/buckman/2009/06/visa-no-more.html where it is clearly stated that in-app Magnatune purchasing in Rhythmbox would be affected) While this bug is confirmed (that is it is valid), I believe it should be changed to won't fix.
