[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups

2009-11-08 Thread Jeroen Massar
@ Jordan.sc #135

I cannot, nor am I authorized to do firmware upgrades at the local coffee shop
at the airport and at my place of business

And generally these locations have neutered DNS already anyway, eg they
only allow HTTP/HTTPS and generally only after authenticating (after
being hijacked using DNS to their portal thingy). These locations
(coffeeshops, hotels, airports, other generic hotspots etc etc) don't
provide true internet anyway and are thus breaking already way too much
protocol wise that there is nothing you can do about it.

The only thing you can do in those locations is to VPN out if you want
to resolve that problem.

In the cases where DNS requests are not blocked (like in hotels and
coffeeshops), you can setup pdns-recursor and use 127.0.0.1 in your
resolv.conf

[Bug 478097] Re: help.ubuntu.com claims to be XHTML 1.0 Transitional but is not

2009-11-08 Thread Prateek Karandikar
Huh, how is youtube.com relevant to this? That's like saying if Windows
can have broken feature X, then so can we.

There are two issues here:

1. The page contradicts itself, by claiming to be XHTML 1.0 Transitional
and not being XHTML 1.0 Transitional. An easy way to fix this is of
course is to just get rid of the DOCTYPE. That still won't solve the
bigger issue:

2. The page is not [X]HTML standard compliant. Ubuntu should set an
example by following web standards, and not adopt the fix in 1 above.

And if you really want other examples, how about
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.debian.org ,

[Bug 453966] Re: dell xps m1330 regression, integrated digital microphone no longer working [karmic koala]

2009-11-08 Thread Luca Invernizzi
As I'm experiencing this bug too, on an xps m1330n, i did a little bit of
research.
I tried to follow the walkthrough in post #7 but that failed, as I couldn't
change the mic input.
I then reverted alsa-utils and alsa base to the first karmic version (1.0.18
for both of them) and, while the mic was not functioning straight away, I
followed the forementioned walkthrough which resulted in a **functioning** mic.

It therefore seems an alsa related bug.
I will try to narrow down the problem tonight.

ps: i downloaded alsa-base and alsa-utils from
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/amd64/alsa-base/ and

[Bug 453579] Re: in-place corruption of large files *without fsck or reboot* reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4

2009-11-08 Thread unggnu
Improperly rebooting runs the risk of breaking your system on *any*
filesystem.
Sorry, but this is not true imho. I have never had a similar problem with ext3.
Yes, there are some file systems like XFS which just deletes the data of a
whole file if the computer crashes or is restarted but I guess the goal should
be especially with a journaling file system to prevent errors like this. Not to
mention that the size of the file is zero with XFS so you don't assume that
everything is fine.
Like I said there is no problem that after a hard reboot some shortly changed
data is lost but this has to be diagnosed and dealt with through the file
system so that no corrupt files are saved without even realizing it.

[Bug 448670] Re: Gramps crashes after some minutes

2009-11-08 Thread Serge Noiraud
I'm the gramps developper which include GeoView in gramps.
Geoview try to load libwebkit or gtkmozembed to show the maps.
If we have none of these kits, Geoview is not loaded.
If we have one kit, we load the kit available
and if we have the two kits, webkit is used.
If you don't need the maps for the moment, you can disallow geoview in the .ini
file
$HOME/.gramps/gramps.ini or gramps32.ini
You remove 'GeoView' in the data-views variable.

This is for the work around. Normally, gramps must run correctly.

Now, for your problem, I think there is a problem during libwebkit and
python-webkit installation.
During the karmic development, I already had this problem one time.
To correct this, I only did :
sudo aptitude remove python-webkit
then
sudo aptitude install python-webkit
and normally, the problem should disapear ...

[Bug 478174] [NEW] [Lucid] Bluetooth Send To hangs on connecting

2009-11-08 Thread KevinM
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

Reporting via gnome bluetooth manual (yelp selected as package by default but
believe it's gnome-bluetooth. Software versions: gnome-bluetooth
2.28.1-0ubuntu2, bluez and bluetooth 4.51-0ubuntu2. I've paired my phone with
the PC by clicking on the Bluetooth Applet and selecting 'Set up new device'.
The phone and PC connect and I can browse the device. If I use 'Send To' from
either Nautilus or by right-click the Bluetooth Applet, I get the messagebox
that the PC is connecting and then the PC just sits there (see attached). I get
no message on the phone (SE K800i).
If I browse the phone and my source PC folder, with Nautilus, I can copy and
paste the file to my phone.

[Bug 477570] Re: Not able to Play Farmville App in Facebook with Ububtu 9.04 (AMD 64 bit PC)

2009-11-08 Thread Micah Gersten
It appears that you installed the 64 bit version of Flash directly from Adobe,
we do not support that at this time. If you want the version from the repos,
you can install flashplugin-installer
It probably will not appear unless you create a new profile:
firefox-3.5 -ProfileManager

You probably shouldn't delete your old profile so that you can reference
any saved passwords/bookmarks in it.

[Bug 474948] Re: Missing dependency libx264.so.65 on amd64 platform

2009-11-08 Thread MartinP
I also had much the same issue when I updated my mythbuntu 9.04
installation to 9.10, however it is not limited to mediatomb, it also
affects other packages that depend on libx264, it also happened to me
with mplayer, I couldn't get it resolved properly (linking would have
worked but I don't like that approach) so I got out a spare hard drive
and did a clean install of mythbuntu 9.10, the error no longer happens.

So in short this is not a bug with mediatomb, I guess the bug is with
libx264?

[Bug 468898] Re: poor persian support in Karmic

2009-11-08 Thread Mehdi Hassanpour
I spent some time on the issue today, yes Adi you're right I was testing
with a Jaunty DVD which has different packages than the CD version!

pmap grep ttf for firefox in Jaunty CD is:

b2285000 316 - - - r DejaVuSansMono.ttf
b2419000 300 - - - r DejaVuSerif-Bold.ttf
b24be000 560 - - - r DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf
b4051000 324 - - - r DejaVuSerif.ttf
b48eb000 608 - - - r DejaVuSans.ttf

and pmap grep ttf for firefox in Karmic CD is:

aebc70001252 - - - r FreeSerif.ttf
b5628000 300 - - - r DejaVuSerif-Bold.ttf
b5673000 560 - - - r DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf
b60ad000 324 - - - r DejaVuSerif.ttf
b723a000 608 - - - r DejaVuSans.ttf

So, the easy workaround for me was removing freefont folder or the ttf-
freefont package... You any ideas why FF uses FreeSerif on karmic?

even if I load an HDR saved with the previous working version under

[Bug 478178] [NEW] Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application

2009-11-08 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)
Empathy 2.28.1.1

Since I like to have my messenger clients running whenever I'm online I
wanted to set that to happen automaticaly. So here's what I tried:

* I looked in the preferences of Empathy, and appart from the confusing entry
Automatically connect on startup described in bug #322314 there is nothing
about connecting.
* I looked under 'System Preferences Startup applications', there is no
entry for Empathy so Itry to make one...
   * The file browser starts in my home directory so I assume there's a good
reason for that and try to find an entry there for empathy. Sadly there's no
entry there called empathy.
   * Luckily I know a bit about this Ubuntu thing and the Gnome Desktop so I
look into the .gnome2 directory. Finally a directory called Empathy. But sadly
that only has log files in it.
   * Thinking I'm a bit savvy I navigate to /usr/share/empathy ... but again
there is no file I can point to to start empathy ...
   * Now I'm getting annoyed, nothing useful in /usr/share/gnome/autostart
   * Nothing in /usr/share/gnome2
   * /usr/bin/empathy looks promising - maybe I'll be lucky this time.

Now I'm thoroughly annoyed at this stupid system which doesn't seem to
have any standard way of starting an application!

2009-11-08 Thread JK
You probably need a probe_mask parameter for your install.

Already did that, probe_mask=8 disables the modem and brings back the
sound (read above). It does not help reactivating the mic though, but
that can be achieved with position_fix=1. And especially the second flag
doesn't make any sense to me. I know (vaguely at least) what it does,
but I can't understand why it is only neccessary on the installed
system!? And also I can't understand why the recording quality is much
worse within the live session (using position_fix=1)...

That's definitely a linux issue, then.

I'd love to read more about what you think about this! How are the
symptoms described above explainable with race conditions? And, if it's
really kernel related, maybe you should change the affects tag...

Regards

JK

[Bug 410763] Re: [karmic] Banshee freeze after some song playback

2009-11-08 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for trying to help us! I'm afraid using killl -11 to trigger Apport
isn't working anymore now automatic Apport warnings have been disabled for the
final release of Ubuntu 9.10.
However, there is a chance that after you've done the kill -11 trick there is a
.crash file in the directory /var/crash with banshee in its name. This is the
crash report that otherwise would ask you automatically if you'd want to report
it. Now you can start Apport by double-clicking the right .crash file.

[Bug 391114] Re: [karmic]snd_hda_intel: audio moves to polling mode and starts repeating (Toshiba A100-259/ATI IXP SB4x0 HD/ALC861)

2009-11-08 Thread JK
You need a pretty thorough understanding of bios and linux at least.

Maybe even more than that. Sometimes it seems that you actually have to
be either an alsa, kernel and bios developer to really understand what's
going wrong with your sound. Actually, I have a pretty good
understanding of linux imho (I'm a full-time developer with some
experience on writing device drivers, though rarely doing kernel
hacking), but I must admit that I don't know much about sound drivers
and obviously wasn't able to fix the sound myself. And that's exactly
the problem, because this is even harder for the famous average joe...

[Bug 468087] Re: dell precision t3400 resume after suspend not working ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-08 Thread guentherk1
I am the one who submitted this bug.

Ubuntu 9.10: This is the first that have attempted to do a suspend and
resume process on Ubuntu in a while on this machine. It does not work.
The resume after suspend comes up to a blank screen and the computer
locks up. This is true even waiting 10 minutes or more, the computer
is still locked up.

Ubuntu 9.04:I did test on Ubuntu 9.04 with no updates applied on this same
machine and suspend and resume don't work on the base 9.04 either.

Fedora 10: Suspend and Resume work fine on this same machine using
Fedora 10.

@Brian Owens: just add it in the plugin section similar the mozplugger

@Jamie Strandboge: I have the same problem with Transmission. Adding

Ubuntu's default torrent client and therefore has a larger userbase and
hence a larger regression potential I think it would make sense to
include the above line as well.

[Bug 393012] Re: smb: Error while copying file, Invalid argument

2009-11-08 Thread Scaine
The shutdown bug is being discussed here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/211631?comments=all, but there's no fix as yet. The
umountcifs.sh script does still work, but as I say, Network Manager
drops the WIFI connection far, far too early in the shutdown process for
it to have any impact. Seems to be a change from Jaunty to Karmic in
how the shutdown scripts are processed - possibly upstart related, since
even running umountcifs in K01 is quick enough.

[Bug 478182] [NEW] after upgrade to Karmic: missing pulseaudio-utils inhibits hibernate/sleep

2009-11-08 Thread Odd A Olsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

After hibernate/suspend the screen goes black, but nothing more happens
to indicate any power down, fan keeps running, heat is produced ... When
I press a key I imediately get back to the password dialog.

The pm-suspend.log tells me that pacmd is missing and the power down
is thus inhibited.

I installed pulseaudio-utils and that fixed the problem.

Conclusion: pulseaudio-utils should be included in the standard upgrade

[Bug 445367] Re: os-prober entries do not use correct /boot device

2009-11-08 Thread Steve Langasek
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 462961 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462961

The other bug report was filed by the desktop team technical lead. I'm
afraid it's unavoidable that bug reports from the developers are going
to get attention much more quickly, since they can escalate such bugs
directly without the need of a bug triager to process the bug first.

Since becoming an Ubuntu developer is probably not the sort of solution
you had in mind, here are some other ways to get more attention on your
bugs:

- Participate in ISO testing before the milestones -
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO - and include links to your bugs in your
ISO test reports.
- If you think a bug has gone unnoticed and should be a higher priority for the
release, try talking to the developers directly on IRC (#ubuntu-devel on
irc.freenode.net).
- Yes, a dfferent bug summary might also have helped. E.g., discussing the
high-level consequence of the bug, as was done in bug #462961.

Hope that helps - it obviously would have been better if we could have
fixed this bug weeks earlier when you first noticed it!
