I'm seeing the same thing on my Dell 1501 laptop running 9.10, the most
recent example was last night. I was using the laptop on battery power,
and plugged in the charger when there was about 1/3 of a charge left as
indicated by the battery status icon. The machine then popped up a

I can confirm this. It seems like there is no access to the display
brightness information due to a lack of suitable driver. I believe it is
a hardware specific problem as there is no such problem on my
girlfriend's laptop (as I can remember right now). On my laptop there is

I have also had this problem. I experimented with installing ubuntu to a
flash drive and when I rebooted the flash drive didn't work and neither
did my laptop.
The default option was for hd0. At the very least this should be more
clear then having to click on some obscure "Advanced" button on the

Have added duplicate status on another bug which points to this one as
the descriptions of the problem are exactly what I see.
I am going to upgrade to Karmic soon and will see if this issue still
occurs with the new -ati stack.

first of all - huge thanks for the help :)
I have tried passing nomodeset, and the flickering did disappear (I don't think
I tried using the Fn keys though)
but my impression was that it caused a degradation in performance, and the MSI
wind isn't really a performance beast to begin w
Alexander, it must be due to me having Ubufox disabled. This is due to
custom icon issue that conflicts with TabMixPlus, among others. When
that is fixed, this issue should go away for me. I was expecting to see
the auto-scroll when it happened.

Okay, I've been trying to trace the problem now. It seems that during
boot up Gnome Do somehow automatically starts itself two times in a row
thus leading to the situation where neither of the opened GD's respond
to commands, so I have to kill them both from the task manager before I
reopen the app
UPDATE: Problem seems to not appear when waking up from hibernation.
Only when booting or rebooting the whole system.

Funny. Today it constantly switches to /minimum/ brightness when I touch
it after the specified time. And turning off the feature (sliding the
appropriate slider to the very left) does not stop this... The logic of
these algorythms should be thoroughly checked.
