[Bug 432670] Re: regression in karmic thermal control

2010-01-06 Thread Mark
I this could help to rule out one of the possibilities, I could install
a pure Debian Kernel on Sidux (which should work since Sidux is Debian
appart from the Kernel and some additional tools. Therefore I would need
some instructions which kernel to pick and how to install and remove it
again (preferebly I would like to install a *.deb package).

[Bug 503905] [NEW] add-apt-repository should write to a new file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ rather than /etc/apt/source.list

2010-01-06 Thread Adam Nelson
Public bug reported:

Package: python-software-properties
Release: 9.10 karmic-update

Expected: When running sudo add-apt-repository deb
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic multiverse, I expected a
new file to be inserted in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ with the new
repository.

What happens: Instead, /etc/apt/source.list was moved to
/etc/apt/source.list.save and /etc/apt/source.list was updated.

Typically, if a debian package has configuration changes, they should be
in the .d/ directory for management (i.e. if urls are changed in the
base installation, etc...)

[Bug 503906] [NEW] [MIR] kubuntu-notification-helper

2010-01-06 Thread Jonathan Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-notification-helper

Rationale:
This is a replacement for update-notifier-kde (in main) that fulfills the
Kubuntu Lucid Development spec
(https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Specs/LucidDevelopment)

Should be fairly straightforward. The only thing it parses manually are
the upgrade hook files, and even then the parser is pretty high-level
and really shouldn't cause any trouble at all.

near zero. This has more or less eliminated the problem for me.

[Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time

2010-01-06 Thread jpborjas
I'm running Karmic (9.10) and a Dell Latitude D630. I was running NVidia
drivers 173 and my BIOS was version A08. My fan was spinning loudly
mostly when the machine came back from suspend mode, but not
exclusively, as it would get loud at random times during the day. The
GPU temp was 60, and the cores where 38 and 37. I used one of those
pressurized air cans and cleaned the fan without opening the case (it
was very dirty). I upgraded the BIOS to A15 (latest), and upgraded the
NVidia drivers to 195.30 (latest stable). Now, I'm running a whole bunch
of processes to try to get the fan to spin loudly, and even though my
temps are GPU 72, Core0 68, Core1 67, the fan is not loud at all, and it
hasn't been for the past 30 mins, so I think the problem went away.

Can you guys post your temperatures? When you say Low or High, how much
is that? I'm trying to see what value I should set my GPU high temp
alarm.

Hi Rich72,

Thank you for your response. When the system crashes, does it do a full
reboot (with the boot screen and screen to select which OS to use) or
does it just kick you back to the login screen? This will help pinpoint
the problem. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 478594] Re: modal dialog takes a very long time to show up in a java application with gnome and nautilus

2010-01-06 Thread Bruno Girin
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

When opening a modal dialog from a java application in a gnome desktop
that uses nautilus, nautilus collects all the java app windows into a
single icon/entry in the gnome toolbar. When the dialog is dismissed,
the gnome toolbar shows again a single icon/entry for each window of the
  java app.

The removal of window entries in the gnome toolbar repaints the toolbar
each time (and I can see it removing the entries one by one) and can
take from under a second to 10 seconds or more when having hundreds of
  windows open.

The archetypical java app with hundreds of windows is ImageJ, a public-
domain application for scientific image processing of widespread use.

If I understood it correctly, the behaviour of the gnome desktop, that
of collecting all windows into one when there is a modal dialog showing,
is to prevent the selection/manipulation of other windows of the same
  app.

  It would be ideal if:
   - the gnome toolbar did a single repaint, potentially eliminating all the
lag without compromising the functionality.
   - the gnome toolbar just marked each window entry as inactive instead of
removing it.

The current delay seriously disrupts usability.

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: amd64
  Date: Sun Nov 8 13:43:29 2009
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10
  NonfreeKernelModules: wl nvidia
  Package: nautilus 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1
  ProcEnviron:
   LANG=en_US.UTF-8
   SHELL=/bin/bash
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic
  SourcePackage: nautilus
  Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic x86_64
+
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Ensure that the test machine has a Java JRE v1.4 or higher installed by
typing java -version in a command line; if this is not the case, install a JRE
+ 2. Download ImageJ as a sample Java application (platform independent
version): http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/download.html
+ 3. Unzip the zip file
+ 4. Start ImageJ by running the run script
+ 5. Select File - Open Samples and open as many samples as possible to create
a large number of windows
+ 6. Select Process - Image Calculator to open a modal dialog
+ = All icons in the Gnome toolbar are coalesced into one, one after the other
+ 7. Click Cancel to go back to the application
+
+ Actual behaviour:
+ - in step #6, icons for the ImageJ application in the Gnome toolbar are
removed one after the other, until only one remain, taking a long time if there
are a lot of windows open
+ - in step #7, icons are not restored and only one remains, even though the
modal dialog is now closed; if steps #6 and #7 are repeated, you can get to a
situation where all icons in the toolbar for the ImageJ application have
disappeared
+
+ Expected behaviour:
+ - in step #6, icons in the toolbar should all be coalesced in one go rather
than one after the other, or should not be coalesced at all but rather marked
inactive in some way
+ - in step #7, icons should be restored to what they were previously

[Bug 503913] [NEW] Use of Autoscale causes winforms to be scretched off screen

2010-01-06 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openbve

Some of the Forms (dialogues) in Openbve were created with a GUI program
and automatically inserted Autoscale lines based on the default font
that the designer was using. When other fonts, or text sizes are in
use, this forces non-proportional scaling of the forms and can leave
them stretched off the sides of the display. It also distorts images.

  http://www.mono-
project.com/FAQ:_Winforms#My_forms_are_sized_improperly

states that the removal of the (automatically inserted) Autoscale
lines from 'form*.Designer.cs' files is likely to fix the issue, and
indeed it does!

[Bug 487655] Re: evolution does ignore system wide proxy settings

2010-01-06 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the
software. You can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. Thanks in advance!

   LANG=en_US.UTF-8
   SHELL=/bin/bash
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic
  SourcePackage: nautilus
  Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic x86_64

-
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Ensure that the test machine has a Java JRE v1.4 or higher installed by
typing java -version in a command line; if this is not the case, install a JRE
  2. Download ImageJ as a sample Java application (platform independent
version): http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/download.html
  3. Unzip the zip file
  4. Start ImageJ by running the run script
  5. Select File - Open Samples and open as many samples as possible to create
a large number of windows
  6. Select Process - Image Calculator to open a modal dialog
- = All icons in the Gnome toolbar are coalesced into one, one after the other
+ = All window icons in the Gnome panel that contains the window list applet
are coalesced into one, one after the other
  7. Click Cancel to go back to the application

  Actual behaviour:
- - in step #6, icons for the ImageJ application in the Gnome toolbar are
removed one after the other, until only one remain, taking a long time if there
are a lot of windows open
- - in step #7, icons are not restored and only one remains, even though the
modal dialog is now closed; if steps #6 and #7 are repeated, you can get to a
situation where all icons in the toolbar for the ImageJ application have
disappeared
+ - in step #6, icons for the ImageJ application in the Gnome panel are removed
one after the other, until only one remain, taking a long time if there are a
lot of windows open
+ - in step #7, icons are not restored and only one remains, even though the
modal dialog is now closed; if steps #6 and #7 are repeated, you can get to a
situation where all window list icons in the panel for the ImageJ application
have disappeared

  Expected behaviour:
- - in step #6, icons in the toolbar should all be coalesced in one go rather
than one after the other, or should not be coalesced at all but rather marked
inactive in some way
- - in step #7, icons should be restored to what they were previously
+ - in step #6, window list icons in the panel should all be coalesced in one
go rather than one after the other, or should not be coalesced at all but
rather marked inactive in some way
+ - in step #7, window list icons should be restored to what they were
previously

[Bug 503912] Re: Firefox Crashed

2010-01-06 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Could you please generate an apport
crash report for this?
You can enable apport for one instance like this:
sudo service apport start force_start=1

I am marking this invalid as apport will open a new bug when the crash
is generated. If it does not, you can reset the status of this one to
New and we will try something else.

[Bug 503919] [NEW] Translations missing

2010-01-06 Thread Jouni K . Seppänen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tuxpaint

Running tuxpaint --lang finnish did not show any Finnish messages. The
package file downloaded from the Ubuntu repository seems to be missing
localization files, since the following command yields no output:

ar p /var/cache/apt/archives/tuxpaint-data_1%3a0.9.20-2ubuntu1_all.deb
data.tar.gz | tar tzv | grep share/locale

I recompiled the tuxpaint source package myself, and the resulting deb
file does include localization files:

ar p tuxpaint-data_0.9.20-2ubuntu1_all.deb data.tar.gz | tar tzv | grep
share/locale
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2010-01-06 19:07 ./usr/share/locale/
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2010-01-06 19:07 ./usr/share/locale/ve/

-rw-r--r-- root/root 1201 2010-01-06 19:07
./usr/share/locale/rw/LC_MESSAGES/tuxpaint.mo
(etc)

Installing thisself-compiled package makes the Finnish messages appear
when I run tuxpaint --lang finnish. (Then tuxpaint also hangs on
quitting, but that is likely an unrelated problem.)

to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want to
try to delete the old version of Flash from your original profile.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:

[Bug 474102] Re: clock applet freezes for up to 2 seconds at a time

2010-01-06 Thread piratemurray
I've stared at my clock for quite some time now.

I don't observe this on my lucid 64 distribution.

Is this something specific with 32 bit 64 bit distros?

2010-01-06 Thread Romoda Károly
Public bug reported:

My CD/DVD work under Windows yet properly, but under Ubuntu 6.10 they can't be

[Bug 456808] Re: Karmic-Networking (SAMBA) just does not work, even with detailed attention.

2010-01-06 Thread justinc
I've had many of the same issues reported in this Bug report over the
last couple of days since I installed 9.10. One thing I've noticed is I
can connect to my share from a secondary user from my macbook pro. If I
try the primary user that was created during the install, also has sudo
all access the user doesn't get authenticated.

Could this be a PAM/security issue?

[Bug 444261] Re: waiting for service to start text in pending operations is misleading

2010-01-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter?action=recallrev=297#installing
said: If the item is queued waiting for other activities to complete,
the status text for the item should be set to “Waiting”. That's for the
general case where it's waiting for a previous Ubuntu Software Center
task.

I've just updated this so that if it's waiting for another package
manager in particular, it should say (for example) Waiting for Synaptic
to exit.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter?action=diffrev2=298rev1=297
Sebastian, is that possible?

VaugKBs, please report individual bugs in separate bug reports.

[Bug 503899] Re: Audio shutdown failure (hits watchdog)

2010-01-06 Thread Paul Sladen
mezcalero my guess is that one thread calls snd_pcm_close() while another one
is still hanging in snd_pcm_writei()
mezcalero is that possible?
mezcalero ALSA is not thread safe
mezcalero you should not call alsa functions on the same object from two
threads at the same time
mezcalero if you do things will go boom

is possibly a pointer that multiple thread aren't helping; eg. if
allocation was doing in one thread, that same thread should probably
also perform shutdown and cleanup. Whether that should be the
application of the library doing that locking remains to be seen...

[Bug 445852] Re: devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart causes HSM Violations on SSD, and potential hardware death

2010-01-06 Thread rogmorri
The factory-installed SSD on my Aspire Acer One 110-1722, a tier-2
netbook, died a few months ago. In retrospect, I think the issue was
this very bug.

(I've since replaced the SSD with a 16G after-market drive, which also
suffered from this problem.)

Wouldn't a problem like this, where there's no easy workaround for
avoiding the problem at install time, call for releasing a new 9.10.1
Ubuntu iso?

Not just that, but it's fixed in Ubuntu Lucid and the ubuntu-audio-dev

[Bug 377402] Re: [K8M890]Square cursor with Ubuntu 9.04 livecd, during VNC connection

2010-01-06 Thread Nelsson
Open Office's icons do not show up. In mine sweeper it only shows the
brown closed squares, but if Open Office is the active window and the
window is moved over minesweeper's window, the squares in minesweeper
show like they should. The cursor is the white box with random-colored
pixels on top of minesweeper's window.

boot Ubuntu from my hard disk and try to insert a CD/DVD, the system

Hello Alessio

do you see any way to have Swiss Keyboard German language as default
on the live CD? Any hint? I'm about to build a Remix due next week - it
would be great to have this well implemented ...

[Bug 479391] Re: version upgrade via update-manager or do-release-upgrade does not work with proxy authentication

2010-01-06 Thread Bruce Labitt
This bug is present in Jaunty. I am behind a proxy and use ntlmaps-0.9.9.0.1
to get through our corporate proxy.
Normal updates function correctly thru the proxy.

update-manager version = 1:0.111.10

update-manager does not show an upgrade option 'button'
Software Sources Updates Release upgrade is selected to Normal releases

$ sudo env | grep http_proxy; sudo /usr/bin/do-release-upgrade
http_proxy=http://127.0.0.1:5865/ == my ntlmaps proxy
Checking for a new ubuntu release
No new release found

Is there a workaround for upgrading from jaunty to karmic?
an apt file to edit? global replace jaunty with karmic ?

[Bug 399636] Re: [i915gm] karmic 2.6.31-2 and -3 lid closing blacks screen until reboot on thinkpad r52

2010-01-06 Thread tribble222
I'm experiencing this same problem. If I suspend either by closing the
lid or by choosing suspend from the menu then upon resume the screen
will flicker occasionally and eventually will fill with a solid color,
usually black. The system remains completely responsive but the screen
won't update. Restarting gdm doesn't fix this. Switching between
consoles and back doesn't work.

This is on an EEE PC 1005HA running Karmic 9.10 with kernel
2.6.32-020632.
