I had this problem recently with 10.4 net book remix. Basically the
install of the proprietary driver fails at the very end.
I followed Ben Prescott's instructions in post #4, THANKS Ben!, and
got it working.

I have an HP laptop with ATI Radeon X4500 mobility and internal Intel
GS45 but after installing FGLRX on Lucid it gave me a black screen after

Here is a very simple scenario to reproduce it on my box (lucid) ...
Single monitor setup, reproducible whatever the theme (ambiance,
radiance, new wave), using metacity and not compiz of course.
From an empty desktop freshly started, with a gnome terminal launcher in the
upper panel :

The fix in dir2ogg should really be considered a work around. It is
just passing the sample rate of the MP3 to mpg123 via the -R
option. mpg321does not require this.
OK, -R is passed to oggenc. mpg123 outputs streams with the same sample rate as
the input, whereas the other decoders use

partition.

Confirmed same problem here, #35 didn't fix it though.
The strange bit is that it works on some AP's and not on others. Both
using WPA2. The difference being that the one that's not working is a
sonicwall box with 802.11n and the working one is a thomson router with
802.11g.

This was originally seen when using OOo, but I believe it would occur
anywhere that those fonts are used. For example with PDFs where the

This also occurred to me.
I'd love to help and give you some helpful log files, etc. but I don't
know the proper path to use for lspci, etc.
I tried the boot option of init=sh and it said:
