By the looks of the bug reports on Debian, it seems that this is caused
by an over-eager compiler optimization (which probably explains why the
amd64 works whilst the i386 doesn't). It ought to be possible to bypass
this optimization for the one section of the code so I would expect a
pretty quick

I confirm this on an HP Compaq nc6000 laptop, Ubuntu 10.04 i386, fresh install,
both as installed and after updates.
My rate of bad boots is roughly 50% (based on roughly 20 restarts).
I installed Maverick alpha3 as a dual-boot. After 20 restarts I cannot
reproduce the problem under Maverick.
Also same here.
Huawei E1820 and fresh install with 10.04.
I use wvdial for the connection, so no idea about network manager problems..

reaching the step where the GRUB setup can be customized (the last page
of the installer) and hitting the Advanced button, the drop-down list
of partitions lists the *current*

@David, it worked! But the sound level is quite low. When I change the level to
100% from No amplification the quality of the sound is very bad, but at least I
can hear my voice!
Speakers, headphones and so on work correctly.
