I reported a similar bug today and I've been trying to find it (with no
success) so that I can give an update: I have found that I can get
desktop effects to work by clearing the 'enable functionality checks'
checkbox. I hope this is relevant, please ignore if it isn't.

My point was to tell that I was about uploading a new version of mutter and
that maybe it was fixed upstream or that the patch should be based on that

I can confirm that I haven't been able to resume from suspend since
using kernel 2.6.35. I am currently using intel_idle, but it happend
when it is disabled as well.My guess is that this bug is affecting
the core i processors, which is why everyone thinks it is intel_idle
if 2.6.36 does
Hugh Parker: most schools have sysadmins that know how to set
environment variables for the system, so it won't really prevent schools
from using Ubuntu. (Neither will the lack of those fonts, really.)
That doesn't mean it shouldn't get fixed somehow though...

More testing: Yesterday I had two successful suspends in a row, and then
the bug occured again. I had the same error with usb. Looking around,
now I think this is the same as Bug #631464 The syslog there has the
same message about usb_dev_suspend+0x0/0x20 returns -16.

I have no idea why this noise is making its appearance.
But, the nomodeset it's set as a SWITCH to your linux kernel in order to
skip, probably, a graphical engine loade with the kernel, the flicker and
noise comes up when booting the kernel, not when loading grub.

Got rid of Lexmark, and am now using an OKI C5950, which suffers similar
problem. OKI C5950 was listed in the linux printer site as being fully
compatible, but isn't. Bug still exists on 10.04 LTS and is application
specific. So using 'Document Viewer' / Evince printing is ok, though it
