Thanks Wayne. I have just found bug 735431, which looks like it has the
same root cause which is thought to be fixed by the patch ath9k: Fix
kernel panic in AR2427 (which is in stable since 2.6.38.3).
Also, a v2.6.38.4 based Natty kernel seems to be in pre-proposed[1].
That's a real ubuntu kernel
If VLC crashes, please upload a proper crash report with Apport. This
error looks more like a NVidia kernel driver problem...

Despite bug 769866 looking inexplicably fixed today, this is still not
working on my system (yet still does work on lucid), using the sudo
mount testcase. mount does work without sudo, though the command
itself fails obviously (only root can do that). :-)

No, I'm not using the fglrx dirver, but the open-source one. Moreover,
I have Natty installed on another laptop with a Intel Ironlake Mobile
car (on a Dell Studio 1458) and I experience the same issue with the
open source driver, i.e. artefacts when minimizing Firefox
Thunderbird.

seems there were lots of wierd chars in '/var/lib/dpkg/available' so i
removed it and restored the available-old now all works :)
