I have a toshiba laptop from about 2008 connected through cable to a
router (roline rotronic router almost no name since I couldn't find
firmware upgrades). The router is connected to the isp through pppoe.
I cannot connect to google.com or any sites related to google.com
I can try again to give it some more time if it tries again, but I did
not see any CPU or disk activity that indicated that it was doing
anything.

I just tried this in a VM with 1024M ram, encrypted home, and 3rd party
selected and had the same problem when using 'Install Ubuntu'. Upping
the ram to 2048M worked around the issue.

I don't know what you are not doing. This crash happens daily. Are you
running precise by any chance or just trying out things on ec2 and a
chroot? :)

Since installing updates yesterday the Unity (and unity 2d option) had
dispappeared from the boot menu for my user (and the guest user). The
only ones available are Recovery Console (which works fine) and User
Defined Session (which seems to just boot to a black screen, but

I can confirm that after disabling Compiz Animations Plugin, system
returns to stable.
