On the affected system when it is manifesting the problem you reported (can't resolve names), is named running locally? (In your original submission you said that bind was running.) What role does this named play in your network? How is it configured? What happens if you stop this named? And then restart network-manager? Hm.. Its interesting. digging further, I don't understand how this caused a problem on nova. It seems (either by design or happenstance) that the general behavior of the metadata service handles this issue, and boto is designed to read the metadata service as it is implemented. I actually verified functional 'boto.utils.get_instance_metadata' on both nova and ec2 with a key named my brickies (nova folsom as packaged in Ubuntu). The output of the commands below was identical. I am having similar issues concerning nis after upgrading to ubuntu 12.04 ypbind does not start on boot. The status command does not show a running process service ypbind status ypbind start/running nor ps -A | grep ypbind I inserted exec /var/log/nis-debug.log 21 in /etc/init/ypbind.conf after script line and the output in nis-debug.log was No NIS server and no -broadcast option specified. Add a NIS server to the /etc/yp.conf configuration file, or start ypbind with the -broadcast option. my /etc/yp.conf is ypserver nisserver (nisserver is resolved by dns ok, tried to use the ip but the problems seems elsewhere) I dont use network-manager (purged) and my /etc/network/interfaces file is the following allow-hotplug lo eth0 auto lo eth0 iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet dhcp The problem seems to be that when ypbind is initially started networking is not up yet For now I execute manually after each boot the following command (I will probably add it at /etc/rc.local although this is ugly) service ypbind restart Some lines from /var/log/syslog showing that ypbind is started before networking and although it is respawning it does not succeed Jun 4 16:47:48 ubuntutestclient ypbind: Host name lookup failure .. Thomas, there is no local named on any notebook here. dnsmasq does not interfere with named on any of my machines. It should actually not even be possible. As far as I am concerned, the bind() request should return false and give an EADDRINUSE if the socket was already bound by something. [Bug 967410] Re: Windows clients cannot connect to shared printers
I am rather new to Ubuntu. Is it possible to uninstall this version of SAMBA and revert back to an earlier version (Which worked fine) until this bug is fixed? I did the same thing, upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and now I cannot use my Linux shared printers on my network. (PCs are using both Vista and XP OS). files from /var/log/upstart, without modifying the upstart job.

I dont use network-manager (purged) and my /etc/network/interfaces file is

The problem seems to be that when ypbind is initially started networking
is not up yet
There's no reason for this that I can see, if your network is configured in
/etc/network/interfaces. The ypbind job itself is configured to start only
after the network is up. ypbind may also be started by the start-ypbind
job, but this job also only starts in response to a series of other jobs
that all wait for the network.
alex, vagk: could each of you please set YPBINDARGS=-no-dbus -debug in
/etc/default/nis, reboot, and attach /var/log/upstart/ypbind.log so we can
see exactly what's failing?

This is quite unusual since as I said, each of these other services (atd and
lightdm) are supposed to wait for events ('runlevel 2') that are themselves
dependent on the network being up. You may also want to boot with --verbose
on the kernel commandline, so that we can see exactly what order the upstart
events are firing in.

The hypothesis was that named started before dnsmasq, preventing dnsmasq from binding port 53 on 127.0.0.1. But the hypothesis is false, since you are not running named after all. Returning to your dig output, it can be summarized as follows. dig s4 - FAILURE dig @10.1.0.4 s4 - FAILURE dig @10.1.0.4 s4.rsb.intern - SUCCESS (Wolf did something here) dig s4 - FAILURE ping s4 - SUCCESS Notice that domain name completion failed even when the external server was specified. As Simon wrote in #4, domain name completion happens in the resolver library. So there seems to be something wrong with the resolver library: it doesn't complete domain names with the domain search suffixes when dnsmasq is in use. Am I right? For example, the aptitude ncurses interface lets you do this by typing a C (or on a command line via aptitude changelog package_name such as aptitude changelog snmp). But the changelogs for this week's updates don't seem to have been loaded on the repos. Martijn- This is the expected behavior of the ec2 fact that ships with facter. If it can connect to a webserver at http://169.254.169.254:80 (the expected location of the meta-data server on Amazon EC2), it will attempt to traverse the directory structure and populate facts with bits of meta-data related to the instance. It seems like, in your case, there is something else serving requests at http://169.254.169.254/2008-02-01/meta-data, but instead of serving a directory structure its serving a HTML file. Facter is using each line of this file as possible directories to query, hence the InvalidURI exception from ruby when trying to connect to http://169.254.169.254/2008-02-01/meta-data/html (which is probably the first line of the HTML file being served) I'm curious to know about the environment you're running this in. Hi, in my attempt to fix this, I tinkered a lot with evolution. I even set up an account with exactly the same settings as one of the exchange accounts has - and to my suprise it worked (in contrast to the old one). I then shut down my computer. Now, after starting the computer again, I get the very same error message as before. Of course, there is the option of cloning the account with every startup, but still this is rather annoying. That said, is there a way to make the working of an MAPI-account permanent, somehow? All those controls for system-wide changes are greyed out, although my user does have sudo abilities and I would be able to enter the root password of the machine. The machine is freshly installed, but with customizations specific to our site, e.g. ldap authentication for users. Specifically, my user is an ldap user, not a local one, and there is a group in the ldap directory which was granted sudo capability by adding it to /etc/sudoers. My user is part of that group. sudo on the command line and gksudo work fine.
