Actually the problem was that /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions was a real
directory on this system instead of a soft link to ../thunderbird-
addons/extensions .
Removing the thunderbird package and reinstalling it fixed the issue.
So something goes wrong in the upgrade path.

I was brought here by the retracer. I am running 12.10 64-bit on a Samsung
NP900X4C. The bug can only be reproduced with certain ISO files:

@Phillip: fscking the ESP (and all other partitions) returns no warning
nor error:
# fsck -fyM /dev/sda2
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1

and the Input/Output error remains after the fsck.

This also occurs in Unity on 12.10, but is much more apparent on my
older (and slower) laptop (Dell Latitude e5510); to the point where the
default alt-tab implementation is frustrating to use. On my new Lenovo

disk using unetbootin on a mac. I solved it by selecting "try ubuntu"
(not install), and then from using firefox to download the amd64 12.04
iso and using ubuntu startup disk creator to create a second usb
startup/install flash

I re-marked the bug as New because you draw your own conclusions based
on unknown facts. I haven't installed Nautilus with the Gnome 3 PPA, I
used the standard Ubuntu repos. Therefore someone should consider this
