Using the sftp cli I get speeds up to 800kb/s which is the max due to

When there is a disk error at startup, this text is supposed to be

Hmmm. The fix was pretty simple, add cases to the MathEnv list in
/usr/share/kde4/apps/katepart/syntax/latex.xml
