I have the exact same problem as hansie describes. I am trying to put Trusty
(14.04 LTS, 32 bit version) on a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4697 with an AMD
Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core processor, 1024 DDR2 SDRAM--same laptop as hansie.
There is no flickering/blinking on the original download of Trusty

I had the same problem when installing fonts from .ttf files. Either the system
froze completely and I had to reboot manually or just the font viewer window
froze, in that case I could right click it in the dock and close it.
However, I found that a bit of patience with the program helps to

Ubuntu 14.04.2 with the dreaded enablement
I checked the media through the installer utility prior to install each
time.
The installation was done via usb all three times. The first 2 installs
of Kubuntu were done from a usb made in OS X with the unetbootin
utility. The usb for the Ubuntu install was made from the Startup Disk
Creator

According to Update Manager, ISC DHCP Client and Common files used by
all the isc-dhcp* packages are part of the FreeCAD package, which I get
from the FreeCAD Daily PPA:

Mainline kernels before 3.13 don't work at all, and the versions of 3.13
built with SYSFB=y are fine while the ones with SYSFB=n are not.

Also had the problem, Ubuntu SDK in Ubuntu 14.04.
Removing appmenu-qt5 solved the problem.
