Ok the problem was the vboxdrv.
While virtualbox was removed,

package grub-efi-amd64 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.10 failed to install/upgrade:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status
I'm now on Ubuntu 16.04 xenial.
VLC now actually plays music, but the UI freezes when I click
play/select a file (so the music *is* playing even while the UI is
frozen). MPlayer, Clementine et all do just fine on my machine. I'll
enter another bug report for that.

I have a similar bug on Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 32-bit. The bar at the
bottom of the desktop - the userbar in Windows (in Linux is it called
the panel bar?) - is unresponsive to the touchpad. The Menu is the same,
plus it disappears at the first click. Response to to the keyboard is
fine as far
from the changelog of grub-pc ... 3.10:
2017-05-19 - Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre grub2
(2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.10) xenial; urgency=medium *
debian/patches/install_signed.patch: don't install fb$arch.efi; it
breaks "removable" installs where files are all installed to /EFI/BOOT;
the 4.2.0 initrd's are pretty sparse, the recent ones seem to have a
full set of modules and firmware (e.g. 18MB of drivers/net)

There is no problem to mount from a samba share on 12.04 LTS but not vice versa!
This is typical for the so called stable releases. Hope it will be fixed very
soon, but
don't believe that.

For me, removing /home/phablet/.cache/QML/Apps/webbrowser-app helped. If
I return backup contents, browser crashes again.
I could send webbrowser-app.tar.gz for investigation.
