[Bug 1705879] [NEW] I'm trying to install Ubuntu from a USB and it's giving me problems

2017-07-22 Thread Thomas Hopkins
Public bug reported:

It won't install on my hard drive. I've tried 4 different hard drives
and am able to get up to the oragami squirrel and then I get an error
message that says my hard drive isn't good enough to install Ubuntu on
it for whatever fucking reason and then it terminates the install and
then goes into Ubuntu but it isn't perminately installed on my desktop
so I can't download Adobe flash player and I can't play Forge of Empires
without Adobe flash player or I would just leave shit alone the way it
is and not even give a fuck about it.

something wrong with your system or hard-drive. Ask for help at

[Bug 1654459] Re: vlc can't play httplive streams with external subtitles

2017-07-22 Thread madbiologist
Does this still occur on Ubuntu 17.04 "Zesty Zapus" with vlc
2.2.4-14ubuntu2.1 ? If you are able to test on Ubuntu 17.10 "Artful
Aardvark" with vlc 2.2.6-3build1 that would be even better.

[Bug 1632183] Re: saned not find scanner that scanimage -L finds

2017-07-22 Thread Bob/Paul
As I understand it, this is an upstream design choice. saned doesn't let
users select which scanners to share, it just shares any scanners that
it can see. I think if network scanners were shared, then 2 saned
instances on the same network get into a loop sharing the same
scanner(s) recursively.

Nothing in the SaneDaemonTutorial points out this issue and it certainly
wasn't clear to me from the saned manpage that this would be a problem.

I AM USING AN OLDER INSTALLER BECAUSE WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO CREATE A NEW
BOOTABLE FLASH STICK INSTALLER WITH ANY MORE RECENT VERSION
CANONICAL/UBUNTU HAD PASSWORD DISABLED THEM!! THAT, AND I NEED THE
LEGACY WACOM GRAPHICS PAD AND MOUSE ACCELERATION FUNCTIONS WHICH ARE
OMITTED IN NEWER INSTALL VERSIONS. THE INSTALLER CRASH HAD BEEN CAUSED
BY AN IMPROPERLY CONNECTED HD CABLE. REMEDIED THAT AND INSTALL WENT
FINE. --UNTIL JUST A FEW MOMENTS AGO, WHEN FACEBOOK HIT THE NEW DRIVE
AND NEW INSTALL WITH YET ANOTHER INSTANCE OF THE SAME ROOT VIRUSES THAT
CAUSED THE NEED FOR THIS CLEAN INSTALL ON A NEW HARD DRIVE TO BEGIN
WITH.

[Bug 332646] Re: sftp does not set timestamps

2017-07-22 Thread david6
Related, and possible NOT worth raising as its own bug.

Renaming a zero-length (semaphore) file in Nautilus does NOT change its
time/date stamp.

Tested/verified today with fully updated Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and
'Nautilus' ('Files' v3.14.3).

2017-07-22 Thread Spindizzy
Just F.Y.I.

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and I still occasionally get this problem on
a cold boot.

It's different than presented here though, because I do not see the
complaint in the .xsession-errors file, but only in the popup that
informs me the widget has failed.

Fortunately, the 'pkill gnome-panel' and restarting it in the background
appears to work, and the widget starts as expected.

I'd still prefer to see this fixed though, even if it is intermittent,
it's a pain.

I just tested 1.0.0.6a AGESA, and it does not solve this issue. In some
cases just one program will crash, and in other cases the entire system
will crash. I will test the workaround above later.

[Bug 1705865] [NEW] PC didn't start.

2017-07-22 Thread Pavlos Kotopoulis
Public bug reported:

After failing to boot, PC stayed in a limbo and couldn't start or close,
for a quite a while, not even from the PC box'es close button. I had to
switch off power and restart, but even this didn't work. Tried 3 or 4
times and abandoned. An effort made long time later to boot was
miraculously successful. Running programe ClamTk didn't reveal any
infection. I've updated software (Ubuntu 18.04.02 LTS) and rebooted
successfully. Hopping it will not happen again. May be it was not a bug
but hardware malfunction. I don't know. Thanks for your patience and
understanding. Ambient temperature was normal during the malfunction (27
degrees Celsius).

[Bug 1705864] [NEW] Nautilus no longer starts (again)

2017-07-22 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

I have reported this bug several times (about 5 times) before.

I have not had this error occur for some weeks.

I was using nautilus during my current session about half an hour ago.

I have tried to start nautilus by:

1. Clicking "Show in folder" from Google Chromium browser; and
2. Clicking the "Files" icon in the Unity Launcher; and
3. Typing "nautilus" into a terminal.

The best I get is the icon in the Launcher flashes as the application
tries to start.

[Bug 1705861] [NEW] Update OpenCV to 3.x

2017-07-22 Thread Ioannis
Public bug reported:

This is really a continuation to this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/opencv/+bug/1540168

The conclusion in that bug report seems to be "Won't fix" for 16.04,
with a promise for inclusion in "zesty+1". I'm not sure if that means
17.04.2 or not. Just wanted to put a placeholder here as a reminder.

OpenCV 2.4.x is seriously outdated and lacking in functionality. Those
of us that needed 3.x, end up building it from source, since even ppa
options seems to be poorly maintained. That makes it hard to collaborate
with others on OpenCV projects.

thank you.

[Bug 1705857] [NEW] crashes when typing pound symbol (shift-3) with English UK and LC_CTYPE="C"

2017-07-22 Thread Richard Weeks
Public bug reported:

I had LC_CTYPE set to C (for some forgotten historical reason!)
I use English (UK) keyboard settings

Hitting shift-3 (often by mistake) makes tcsh crash.

[Bug 1705855] [NEW] update not possible

2017-07-22 Thread jplessow
Public bug reported:

I receive the following message:

An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu
or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was:
Unknown Error: class SystemError (The package libc6 needs to be
reinstalled, but can't find an archive for it). This usually means that
your installed packages have unmet dependencies.

How can I solve this problem? How can I run Package Manager from the
right-click menu? On what do I have to make a right click so that
Package Manager opens? And what do I have to do then?

[Bug 1508146] Re: alt + left/right arrows switch between tty consoles, cannot disable

2017-07-22 Thread jzacsh
Hm... i didn't check quickly enough, but according to the timestamp on
the below `dmesg --kernel --human` output (about the time I first
experienced this bug), this bug *might* be related to this keycodes
error...:

[Jul22 17:45] atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xa8 on
isa0060/serio0).
[  +0.04] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e028 ' to make it known.
[ +15.411721] atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xa9 on
isa0060/serio0).
[  +0.07] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e029 ' to make it known.

But I don't know enough about that log message to decide either way.

[Bug 875343] Re: Stuck at "Saving installed packages..." when using a custom /var

2017-07-22 Thread Brad Schaffer
I apologize if this is off topic, my intent is to help, and offer
something that may be a work around.

During an upgrade from 18.1 Mate to 18.2 Mate, I got caught in “Saving
installed packages” too.

Pixy Yuan (pixy-bupt) #41 is right, delete everything but /home by way
of sudo’ed file browser. I also delete most .xxx files - if you keep
.remmina and the like - you don’t have to re-invent the wheel, but get
rid of the standard system hidden files in /home/username/

Install shifted into copying files directly. No wait. Full Mate install
in under 10 minutes on a Dell Lattitude D610 - Pentium M single core 1.1
gig CPU

I thank my friend Jason for showing me this, many years ago, and wanted
to share. NOTE - I did not have /var in a custom spot, thus the apology
in the first line.

Brad

[Bug 1508146] Re: alt + left/right arrows switch between tty consoles, cannot disable

2017-07-22 Thread jzacsh
Adrian: no, not lightdm-specific. This just happened to me for the first
time today and I'm using gdm3 and gnome3.

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS"

If anyone could shed light on what logs might be checked, to debug *how*
this change magically comes about, that would be helpful[1] to finding a
solution. (where "solution" is: this behavior shouldn't get enabled
unexpectedly).

[1]: I personally haven't a clue how this happened. I just installed a
`snap` package ("shotcut") for the first time ever, and "openshot" via
`apt`, then a few minutes later found this was happening.

(LP: #1691842)
- Linux-v4.11-getattr-takes-struct-path.patch

  * Cherry pick proposed patch to fix build with Linux 4.10.
  * Cherry pick proposed patch to fix build with Linux 4.10.

These patches are all included upstream in 1.6.21.

Changelog entries since current artful version 1.6.20-2ubuntu2:

openafs (1.6.21-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release (1.6.21):
- Include support for Linx versions through 4.12. (Closes: #859155)
- Improve support for Linux kernels with backported patches.
  (Closes: #855366)
- Improve bosserver startup behavior with unexpected arguments or
  configuration symlinks.
- Re-enable vcache cleanup improvement from 1.6.18, with bugs fixed.
- Provide the afsd -inumcalc option; this behavior was previously
  only configurable via sysctl.
- The salvager updates volume "last update" times when modifying volumes.
- Demand-attach fileserver improvements for reducing log spew and preventing
  thread exhaustion during CPS recalculation.
- Avoid a potential 100ms transmit delay in RX when the peer's receive
  window advances.
  * Switch openafs-fileserver.service to Type=simple and pass -nofork to
bosserver.  (Closes: #865962)
  * Update for policy version 4.0.0, honor nodoc in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS
  * Use service(8) instead of /etc/init.d/* directly in documentation and
helper scripts

[Bug 1032456] Re: Canon inkjets (and some other printers) print only half of the last page after 20120801 upgrade to v1.5.3-0ubuntu2

/support-inkjet-printer/mp-series/pixma-mp470) connected via USB to
Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS. As per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, I applied the
following commands:

$ cancel -a
$ lpq
MP470-series is ready
no entries
$ lpadmin -p MP470-series -o usb-unidir-default=true

I hit "Print Test Page" from the Printers settings dialog. The printer
test page then printed as expected.

[Bug 1705848] [NEW] fresh install (over running 17.04) failed

2017-07-22 Thread Pnashdc
Public bug reported:

I decided to try a fresh install over a running that was a bit sluggish,
but otherwise fully operational. I selected a UEFI and the only other
option I selected was to use only part of the drive (128G SSD). I
expected to use a swap file, but the installer insisted on using a swap
partition that previously existed on a second drive (2G HDD) that was
used for a different OS on that drive. So, I also selected a swap
partition on on the SSD.

[Bug 1327002] Re: Mint 17/Ubuntu 14.04 - can only launch one instance of gthumb

2017-07-22 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Also affects: gthumb (Ubuntu Trusty)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gthumb (Ubuntu Trusty)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

** Changed in: gthumb (Ubuntu Trusty)
   Status: New => Triaged

** Changed in: gthumb (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ The bug prevents users from launching a second instance of gthumb.
+
+ This feature is sometimes useful, for example, when opening a few images
+ in a row from a file manager - it might open a new instance of gthumb.
+
+ In addition, second instance fails to run without any messages (unless
+ you run it from terminal), which is confusing to the users.
+
+ The fix had been already applied upstream a few years ago, and it would be
nice to backport it to Trusty.
+ The debdiff which is attached to this report contains the backported patch.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+
+ - launch one instance of gthumb from terminal: gthumb &
+ - try launching a second instance: gthumb
+
+ Expected result:
+
+ - second instance would open normally
+
+ What really happens:
+
+ - second instance shows error message and quits immediately:
+
+ GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Application does
+ not handle command line arguments
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The fix had been applied upstream a few years ago, so it had been tested
+ since then.
+
+ It was also tested by Utopic/Vivid/Wily users as it was included in
+ gthumb 3.2.8 in these releases.
+
+ I consider the regression potential to be low here.
+
+
+ [Original Report]
  If I right click on an "image file" in caja, select "open with", then
"gthumb" :
  In Linux Mint 13 Mate 32-bit I could open/launch multiple instances of gthumb
from caja
  In Linux Mint 17 Mate 32-bit I can only launch a single instance of gthumb -
it seems to start, then nothing
  In Linux Mint 17 Mate 32-bit I found I could open multiple instances of
gthumb only from the gthumb file menu, select "New WIndow".
  Worked in 13, not in 17 - could not find a preference (like I describe below
for a similar problem with VLC Player) to solve this problem.

  Note: found a similar problem with VLC Player, but it turned out a
  difference in default preference setting in VLC from 13 to 17, making
  that VLC preference change (preferences/interface settings/playlist and
  instances/use only one instance when stated from file manager) solved
  the problem.

[Bug 1705845] [NEW] Installer fails with volume encryption

2017-07-22 Thread Artemgy
Public bug reported:

Choosing "physical volume for encryption" makes the installer GUI fail, using
Lubuntu Next artful Alpha 1 image:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu-next/releases/artful/alpha-1/artful-desktop-amd64.iso

## Steps to reproduce

sudo swapoff -a # avoid bug with 'unsafe swap'
cat /proc/swaps
ubiquity &

* [Continue] through Welcome and Wireless to Disk
* choose "Manual" then [Continue]
- NB: this is reinstalling over existing partitions from a previous install
* select swap partition - [Change] - "do not use parititon"
- also to avoid bug with 'unsafe swap'
* boot partition - change - "Ext4" - check format - "/boot"
* main partition - change - "physical volume for encryption"
* click Install

This does NOTHING - the Install button just deselects itself when you
click it!

## attempt to change options to make Install button work...

This might be a secondary issue.

* reselect main partition - [Change]

Installer Crashed
