This has worked in Unity for many years so it's certenly not impossible.

Well here we are at Nov 5 2017 and Ubuntu17.01 still has the same problem. It
is interesting that Debian unstable has a working copy. I really need this
program and have wasted hours trying to get it to work. The J. Schoeberl
suggestion above may work for some but not for me.

Tried changing the grub command line to boot from the other disk of the
raid set. It gave me the same error on that disk, but the one I was
using previously was mountable.
Also, checked SMART data for signs of disk failure, but everything looks
fine.
