[Bug 1740299] Re: package dnsmasq-base 2.78-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 1740299] Re: package dnsmasq-base 2.78-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Dzintars,
dnsmasq user is set up by the preinst of dnsmasq right before the chown.
But nogroup is a generic group not tied to dnsmasq that should always exists.

You should have such a group as well and therefore the error should (tm)
not exists :-)

What does the following give you:
$ getent group nogroup

I get a high group id like:
nogroup:x:65534:

It is part of base-passwd and set up to exist on the inital install.
I could only think of a system that had someone hard remove that group to
trigger this error.
Maybe checking for the id as suggested above help you to start sorting it out.

[Bug 1727202] Re: [17.10 regression] AppArmor ntp denial: Failed name lookup - disconnected path

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thanks Gordon for the extra info.

There are two things in this actually.
1. the disconnected path goes back more release than assumed
   I added tasks since Xenial on the bug here, but even if (for whatever
reason) we would decide
   not to push that to X/Z it would not affect the Artful SRu to be stalled
once verified to work.

2. the open to its own binary on startup, yes I think I have seen those but
this is
   a) a separate issue to be filed for it.
   b) so non severe that no one addressed it so far (might be a nice papercut
bug [1])
   I'd assume it already exists as severity low/whishlist, then just the
tagging has to be done.

[Bug 1739019] Re: Gnome Shell does not start in Xorg mode

2018-01-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It looks like Xorg is running but sounds like gnome-shell is
missing or hung.

Do you find any crash files in /var/crash? If so, please use the
'ubuntu-bug' command to upload them and also add a comment here
mentioning the new bug ID.

Otherwise...

While your screen is black, switch VTs again (Ctrl+Alt+F4 or really
anything from F3 upward) and login. Now does 'ps auxw | grep gnome-
shell' show any gnome-shell process? If so then please force it to dump
a crash file with something like this:

  kill -TRAP

And look in /var/crash again, per above.

[Bug 1739585] Re: L2 guest failed to boot under nested KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x0

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
In between Christmas and NewYear I tried to two more systems I had
(host-model on both levels), none triggered the issue, but then also
none were new enough I guess.

@James - Any further updates to this like testing with more combinations
of cpu specifications or anything else that guides us to where we would
actually tackle this issue?

@James - another chance to debug could be to just do host-model on both
levels like I do in my tests (to be close to openstack), but to do that
on your systems. Can you (or I) get a host login to those to try that?

[Bug 1728244] Re: Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

2018-01-02 Thread Wolfram Gürlich
Just a wild guess. Could this issue be related to the one mentioned
here?

https://github.com/vlasenko/hid-asus-dkms/issues/24

It deals with a timing issue between the POWER ON and the RESET command
to the touchpad which keeps the touchpad from initializing correctly.
Apparently the generic Windows driver adds a much larger pause there.

[Bug 1727202] Re: [17.10 regression] AppArmor ntp denial: Failed name lookup - disconnected path

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
While I see the non-crit "other" issue with opening its own binary I can
not confirm the disconnected path issue in a current xenial guest.

Since we knew this appears when trigging the running service to emit an error
message I tried to force such an error message. I knew on later releases I
could do so by e.g. spawning another virtual interface to bind on by starting a
KVM guest (ntp would try to bind on that but fails).
On Xenial I see the error messages without any apparmor related issue.

While I don't know what is different on bug 1475019 (maybe ntp was
manually namespaced on that setup) this bug here "as reported" is a
regression in 17.10.

[Bug 1740829] [NEW] sync sysstat 11.6.1-1 in bionic

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

We only had Delta that is upstreamed.

So the open Delta for:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysstat/+bug/1716113
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysstat/+bug/1720627

Were resolved by Debian picking latest upstream for:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=872926
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=883863

That said, no delta left to carry and we could pick up further fixes
from upstream by being a sync again.

[Bug 1739880] Re: on wayland, mpv opens without window elements, OSD missing

2018-01-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I agree this is annoying. We would all like to see nice consistent
window decorations. So before reading on, remember we're on the same
side :)

Firstly you should know that choosing Wayland instead of X11 is an
Ubuntu feature and not a bug. We patch that in on Ubuntu in order to
provide hardware-accelerated playback:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mpv/0.26.0-3ubuntu1

But that change is not upstream for reasons such as the missing window
decorations:

https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/pull/4556

Choosing Wayland and not X11 is necessary because libva (VA-API) only
supports DRI2 and Xwayland only supports DRI3. They are not compatible
with each other so --opengl-backend=x11* will never get acceleration in
a Wayland session.

Hardware-accelerated video playback was a major feature in Ubuntu 17.10.
The problem is we have to choose between having window decorations or
having hardware acceleration. And Ubuntu has chosen hardware
acceleration. In fact, the missing window decorations are not an mpv
bug, but a general problem with all native wayland apps right now. The
app/toolkit has to provide its own window decorations with Wayland. GTK
does that so you won't notice a problem with GTK apps.

Unfortunately using --opengl-backend=x11egl undoes this change, turning
off hardware acceleration. And that's a very big deal because modern 4K
and HEVC videos simply can't be played without hardware acceleration
even on high-end CPUs. So we'll stick with the Ubuntu default of
--opengl-backend=wayland. We need acceleration working.

If mpv 0.28 somehow fixes this then great. But I suspect actually that
PPA only works because it omits the Ubuntu patches which we would like
to keep.

I suggest a better solution you would be happy with is to install gnome-
mpv instead. That will give you window decorations. But that does mean
inefficient playback (see https://community.ubuntu.com/t/hardware-
accelerated-video-playback/304/4).

[Bug 1709877] Re: CPU hotplug fails in the system with empty numa nodes, "Invalid value '0-1, 16-17' for 'cpuset.mems': Invalid argument"

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Satheera,
since this was waiting for verification so long the version number used in the
ppa was consumed by another (unrelated) update. I think there is no reason to
drive all of the rebuild just for this as there is an easier way to do the
testing against the version in the ppa as-is.

You will need to force the install of the version from the ppa being
1.3.1-1ubuntu10.15~ppa1
Fortunately I see in your report above that the newer libvirt-bin
1.3.1-1ubuntu10.15 was in use.
So if after adding the ppa you could not just normally apt update&upgrade but
then force the version like:
$ apt install libvirt-bin=1.3.1-1ubuntu10.15~ppa1
libvirt0=1.3.1-1ubuntu10.15~ppa1

This would allow you to check from the ppa without any collision with
this or other updates.

[Bug 1739931] Re: missing entries on popup menus from dock icons

2018-01-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Those lines aren't blank. They're horizontal separators. Unfortunately
those horizontal separator lines are so faint you can hardly notice
them. Maybe on some monitors they're not visible at all. I can see them
but honestly didn't notice they existed until today!

So I think the colours in our theme for separator lines might need
improving, but that's a minor theme issue.

2018-01-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like you're using Ubuntu Touch, is that correct?

Regardless, 'qtmir' would be the wrong source package for this bug. I'm
not sure what the right package is so maybe someone else can help.

[Bug 1740441] Re: Nautilus infobar, searchbar & notification dialog issue

Thanks for the bug report. Ideally we should have one bug report per
bug, so please see if you can split this bug up with some separate bug
reports.

Right now I can only immediately confirm the first issue mentioned (1.)

P.S. I suspect EOG bug 1729693 might be related to this too.

[Bug 1735388] Re: Server seeded Python2 packages

tickcount is probably unportable to Python 3
(https://bugs.python.org/issue19199). As far as I know it's only there
for the benefit of Launchpad, and we can manage via a PPA or a

also look at removing our dependency on it.

[Bug 1734207] Re: Multiple PSKs with dyndns left/rightids doesn't work

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thanks for the extra general regression check Simon!
And also for the documentation of the detailed tests you did.

I used that to test Artful and Zesty as well.

Files as outlined by Simon Deziel, just in my case IPs different.
Note: needs hosts file on east and west.

zesty
 169.254.6.1 => 192.168.122.226
 169.254.6.2 => 192.168.122.224

artful

[Bug 1740838] [NEW] JRE crashes during extraction of Maven index files in NetBeans 8.2

2018-01-02 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

JRE crashes during extraction of Maven index files in NetBeans 8.2. I
could reproduce this 4 times and it seems to happen permanently. The
terminal contains

```
#
after the crash.
I submitted the bug report at the shown URL, but it's only an ivory
tower internal bug tracker, so I can't access it anymore. It's missing
the `hs_err_` and core dump, so it's useless anyway.
[Bug 1739427] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.20-0ubuntu0.17.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script re turned error exit status 1
2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.
On upgrading a service this service has to be restarted to pick up the fixes.
Rather rarely a real issue occurs that the newer version does e.g. fail with
the formerly working configuration.
But most of the time what happens is, that a service was installed, but stays
unconfigured or experimented with but left in a broken state.
Now on any update of the related packages that service has to be restarted, but
since its config is incomplete/faulty it fails to restart.
Therefore the update of that package has to consider itself incomplete.
Depending on your particular case there are two solutions:
- either remove the offending package if you don't want to continue using it.
- Or if you do want to keep it please fix the configuration so that re-starting
the service will work.
Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.
If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community
Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.
** Changed in: mysql-5.7 (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Incomplete
Hi,
Due to that the service is failing to (re-)start.
But that is a requirement to upgrade the package (to do updates on the upgrade).
You can fixup the DB (or remove it if not needed) or remove mysql
completely if not used anyway.
[Bug 1740846] [NEW] Fritzing noch finding any parts
2018-01-02 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:
Under 16.04 fritzing 0.9.2b+dfsg-3 worked just well, but under 17.10
0.9.3b+dfsg-4 is just broken.
First, there are two executables, /usr/bin/fritzing as an executable and
/usr/bin/Fritzing (the former name of the binary) as a shell script, starting
the binary.  Unclear, which to use (actually doesn't matter, both not working)
Starting fritzing (the binary) runs into several error messages:
"Sorry, we have a problem with the swapping mechanism. Fritzing still
works, but you won't be able to change parts properties."
"Cannot read file /home/danisch/bins/core.fzb: No such file or
directory."
"Fritzing cannot load the parts bin"
and then does not find any parts to use.
Starting Fritzing (the script) does not issue any error message, but
changes the working path and does not offer any parts to install, i.e.
it just does not work without any complaints.
Means: Fritzing not working at all under 17.10.
[Bug 1727237] Re: systemd-resolved is not finding a domain
2018-01-02 Thread Axel
Can we know what's the fix?
I apologize but I cannot recognize the patch in this thread.
I am running ubuntu 17.10 and am affected by a
securelogin.arubanetworks.com-company-public-network.
I would like to test the fix.
How can I do that?
Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards
[Bug 1740848] [NEW] Bad polish translation: actions and activities are translated to the same word
2018-01-02 Thread Mekk
Public bug reported:
In Polish KDE translation, both activities (= subject-oriented virtual
desktops) and actions (= varioius window-related actions) are translated
using the same word „działania”. This is very confusing.
For example, after right-clicking window title I get window menu with
the following contents
Przenieś na ekran >
Działania >
Minimalizuj
Maksymalizuj
Więcej działań>
Zamknij
2nd and 5th positions mean the same (Więcej = More in Polish) and after
3 years of facing it I still must click both to ensure which leads to
Activities menu and which to extra window actions.
~~~

Suggested fix: as translating „activities” to „działania” seems
established, I would not change it (albeit personally I'd probably
prefer naming this „subjects" in English and „tematy” in Polish).

Instead, I suggest changing translation of „More actions” from „Więcej
działań” to one of:

- just „Więcej…”  (= „More…”)

- „Więcej czynności”
   (in fact IMHO „czynność” would be better than „działanie” even without the
problem,
the words are mostly synonyms but I'd usually consider „czynność” to be sth
small
and fast, and „działanie” to be sth big and long-lasting)

[Bug 1739674] Re: virsh Fails at Hot Plugging Network Device with model virtio

2018-01-02 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Launchy Man,
and thanks for your report.

So to clarify you get an error like:
  apparmor="DENIED" operation="file_receive" profile="libvirt-..."
name="/dev/vhost-net" comm="qemu-system-x86" requested_mask="rw"
denied_mask="rw"

The fix for this actually made it upstream in [1].
Since then the individual guest profile gets the rule "if needed".
That is even done with the default devices these days, so my guests always have
this:

grep vhost /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/$(virsh dominfo xenial-test2 | awk
'/^Security label:/ {print $3}').files
  /dev/vhost-net rw,

My test system had

I wonder if this could be a timing issue - for example:
1. start a guest without any vhost needing device
   (rule is not added intentionally)
2. later hot-add such a device
   (error would be that it is missed to add the rule now)

To test that I started my guest without any network.
Now the guest profile has no vhost-net rule (as expected)

Then I added the userspace network like you (working, no rule change) and
removed it again.
$ virsh attach-interface --domain xenial-test2 --type network --source default
--mac "de:ad:be:ef:de:ad" --config --live
$ virsh detach-interface --domain xenial-test2 --type network --mac
"de:ad:be:ef:de:ad" --config --live

Note that on each of those actions as I expected I saw a trigger to reload the
profile on hot-add.
So we got:
[...] apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" [...]
name="libvirt-2359c3ff-6003-429a-b56e-bf55ec84203b//qemu_bridge_helper"
pid=7493 comm="apparmor_parser"

Note: the env obviously will have to be vhost-net capable or it will
silently fall back to non-vhost.

Next I attached the mode virtio device like you did (destroyed and re-spawned
the guest before that to be clean):
$ virsh attach-interface --domain xenial-test2 --type network --source default
--model virtio --mac "de:ad:be:ef:de:ad" --config --live
error: Failed to attach interface
error: internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'getfd': No file
descriptor supplied via SCM_RIGHTS

So far confirmed, but great Idea where to intercept at the right time - I'd
have expected that the profile reload would load a new profile with the needed
rule added.
OTOH as soon as you have any vhost-net device on the normal start (most common)
it will work.
So severity is low.
