I started encountering this issue also. My system was working fine up
until yesterday when this started happening. I most often notice it when
I connect my laptop to an external display (or make some other display
related change that kicks me to the login prompt).

I've been trying various things - not sure if they help or confuse!
Firstly I should clarify one thing. For these trials Xubuntu and
Lubuntu are 32 bit, the rest all 64 bit. I did not think this relevant
as originally one 32bit worked, one didn't, one 64bit worked, one
didn't.

The current version of nautilus, which is the very core of Ubuntu, is
broken. Search is not the same as navigation. I do not want to search my

Have several NFS volumes that I mount and unmount. Have always seen the
volume ICON show up on the desktop and the nautilus shortcut panel but
this is no longer occurring in 18.04. The mount is available. Have
verified that the tweaks-ui setting is ON for mounted volumes.
