Finally found what changed. I updated /etc/fstab to have /proc mounted
with hidepid=2,gid=sudo for added security. This works perfectly on
16.04 but totally breaks on 17.10.
To recap: mounting /proc with "nodev,noexec,nosuid" works but adding
"hidepid=2,gid=sudo" breaks.

It essentially creates a folder with 11.5k files of size 600KB and 10
files of size 200MB,
This is still present on 18.04 daily builds. I downloaded it just today
and I can't get past the 'Force UEFI installation?' dialog.

Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make
this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1754202, so is being marked as such.
Maybe we can just check that the lsb-release package has the right
package origin? I'm thinking of something along the lines of

dev/ubuntu/bionic/apport/ubuntu/view/head:/backends/packaging-apt-
dpkg.py#L166.
This way we could exit out of the upgrade
