[Bug 1796137] Re: huge and slow image 20181002 due to seeded lxd snap

2018-10-04 Thread Stéphane Graber
To get the extrausers in the log above, you need this "grep -q
"^passwd.*extrausers" /etc/nsswitch.conf" to be true, so I'm wondering
what else may be different in this image's nsswitch and also how we
ended up with extrausers in nsswitch but no extrausers file on disk.

I suspect the solution will be to change our check to be a bit more
specific in what we're looking for (which is effectively an Ubuntu Core
system where /etc/passwd isn't writable and extrausers is the way to get
extra users/groups).

Because I suspect the GCE image may have a different looking one.

The one in the base image that you posted wouldn't trip the code that
uses extrausers.

[Bug 1796137] Re: huge and slow image 20181002 due to seeded lxd snap

2018-10-04 Thread Scott Moser
repeat boots could I guess be slow as a result of bug 1786165.
The snaps that are seeded are never removed. perhaps snapd doesn't realize (or
has to re-check) to verify that they are not new.

I'd suggest debugging and re-create in lxd itself.
Doing so allows you to jump into the container before networking is available
and push/pull files easily.

[Bug 1782038] Re: Window buttons are small in a maximized Chromium window

2018-10-04 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ In maximized google-chrome / chromium window buttons for close,
+ minimize, and restore buttons should be normal-sized, but instead appear
+ small.
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ 1. Use the Ambiance or Radiance themes.
+ 2. Launch a Chromium or Google Chrome window.
+ 3. Ensure that in chrome settings, the "Use system borders" option is
unchecked
+ 4. Maximize.
+ 5. Window buttons should have normal size.
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ Other windows buttons could loose the padding used for being closed.
+
+ ---
+
  Repro:
  1. Use the Ambiance or Radiance themes.
  2. Launch a Chromium window.
  3. Maximize.

The window close, minimize, and restore buttons should be normal-sized,
  but instead appear small.

This is because the buttons have a padding of 9px on the top and bottom,
causing Chromium to think they're taller than they really are, so it
downsizes them to fit the smaller headerbar on the maximized window.

The attached patch removes the padding. There are no changes in
behavior in apps other than Chromium.

[Bug 1751421] Re: software updater causes mouse buttons to stop working

2018-10-04 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
A major problem for Ubuntu (and I guess for Linux system in general) is
that they have a steep learning curve for user coming from a Windows
environment.

I add that, after all those years, LibreOffice is still not compatible
with the DOCX ISO-standard, which (at least for me) is a reason to stay
with MS-Office.

I further add that Ubuntu's user interface is rough and inconsistent.
Rough in the sense that the various programs and utilities vary
(greatly) in their ease of use and inconsistent in the sense that they
vary (infuriatingly) in their implementation of menus.

What I am asking is "please try to see things from a user's
perspective". I feel that the importance of this bug should be just
below critical.

I tested the most recent proposed kernel (4.4.0-138) using the same
power faulting methodology as before. Everything looks good. I updated

[Bug 1768010] Re: usbmount does not work on Bionic

2018-10-04 Thread James
I built the new package mentioned in #4 above. While it does auto mount
the USB devices, there does seem to be a permission issue as mentioned
above.

As root in /media/usb0

# touch test && ls -al test

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Oct 4 16:13 test

# chmod 777 test && ls -al test

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Oct 4 16:13 test

>From mount -v :

/dev/sda1 on /media/usb0 type vfat
(rw,nodev,noexec,noatime,nodiratime,sync,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=ascii,shortname=mixed,errors
=remount-ro)

So there seems to be a bit more to it.

2018-10-04 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Yeah, I feared that might be the case. This is the problem when the bug
isn't so easy to reproduce.

There's a couple of things I want to try; let's proceed now with a
package in a PPA before we randomly upload stuff to the archive --
there's definitely some cleanup code that could be added to plymouth,
but that doesn't mean it's actually going to fix the problem.

2018-10-04 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1794899] Re: ghex both installed and not-installed

2018-10-04 Thread gf
Hi Humphrey,
You mention attachments? I don't see any, other than your apport information.
Were there screen prints you could attach?

Your apport info above says ghex is not installed.
"ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04
Package: ghex (not installed)"
Did the install go OK without errors? How did you install it? On 18.04, Ghex is
a snap package. Do you have the capability to run snaps?

I'd like to change the title as well to something like:
"Ghex installed but program won't start"
Please let me know if that is ok.

Is there a way to start it from the command line and see if you get any error
messages?
Are there any error logs you could upload here to give the programmers an idea
of what is happening?

I know this is rudimentary but, to help me prepare a summary for the
programmers, could you post the exact steps to reproduce? I don't have your
interface, so I can't reproduce it here on my computer.
For example,
1. hit (...) button(s) to open the HUD
2. left click on...
3

Thanks
G

It looks like you may have nss-extrausers installed, causing a mis-

[Bug 1743058] Re: Input field height changes slightly when entering in st password fields.

2018-10-04 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

It appears there is the font/height rendering issue in multiple places.
With the textentry "jumping" in height slightly upon entering anything.

I have observed this on the login screen password entry screen,
lockscreen entry, and the gnome pin entry for my ssh/gpg smartcard.

It almost feels as if the "dots" of the hidden password are either of
larger font size and/or bold, whilst an empty text field and/or
unfocused text field font is either smaller and or regular (non-bold).
Resulting in a rendering / layout jiggles.
+
+
+ [ Impact ]
+
+ Password input field increase the vertical size as soon as the user
+ types something
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ 1. Run:
+pkexec true
+ 2. Start typing something
+ 3. The input field should not resize vertically
+
+ This works only in case the big-font a11y option is not enabled
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ Input Text entries might be slightly taller than they were

[Bug 1794896] Re: nautilus does not show Ghex in Select Application

2018-10-04 Thread gf
Hi Humphrey, to help me prepare a summary for the programmers, could you post
the exact steps to reproduce?
For example,
1. Open nautilus
2. right click on (what type of file?)...
3

And could you attach a screen print of the "other applications" menu,
showing that ghex is missing?

Thanks
G

[Bug 1785699] Re: Invisible text in insenstitive suggested action buttons

2018-10-04 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
The suggestion action button does not have correct text styling when the
action button is "insensitive" (greyed out). This makes the text basically
invisible since it has the same dark grey color for both the foreground text
and the background.
-

  Test Case 1
  ---
  1. Open the file browser.
  2. Open the ☰ menu and select New Folder.

  What happens:
  1. In the New Folder dialog, the top right button has invisible text.
Screenshot attached.

  What should happen:
It should show the word Create but greyed out.

  Test Case 2
  ---
  1. Open the gedit text editor.
  2. Open the ☰ menu and select Save As.
  3. In the Name field, delete all the text to make the field empty.

  What happens:
The word Save in the top right button becomes invisible.

+ Regression Potential
+
+ Color for elements other than the label of suggested actions is wrong

[Bug 1796137] Re: huge and slow image 20181002 due to seeded lxd snap

2018-10-04 Thread Dan Watkins
I was able to SSH in before the service completed, so I don't think it's
just a lack of network connectivity.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/pSrJJVD8zt/ is the full journalctl output from
the (GCE) instance.

(I'm not 100% sure if this is relevant to the second part of your
comment, Dimitri, but this is a snap service, so this script is running
in a snap context (i.e. not fully "in" a classic system).)

[Bug 382938] Re: ufw should be enabled by default

2018-10-04 Thread Santeri Kannisto
Jeremy,

I believe that without a graphical tool it is even more critical to have
ufw enabled and running by default. Anyway, no worries about my patch
and bug reports. I forked and patched ufw and have the package available
in my PAA at
https://launchpad.net/~santerikannisto/+archive/ubuntu/desktop

At this point I don't see any point or need in implementing a GUI config
tool for ufw by myself nor participating in such effort. For my needs
it's enough that ufw is enabled and running out-of-the-box blocking by
default all incoming traffic with logging switched off.

Cheers,

Santeri

2018-10-04 Thread Francis Ginther
CPC has completed automated image testing of each of the three images in
/comments/5 which included the gce-compute-image-packages pulled from
-proposed for each release. This is the same testing done for releasing
of a new image. There were no regressions.

Google has also completed their internal testing of these packages and
are ready to release these.

@sil2100, Thanks, yeah Ken messaged me and we realised the message was
only sent to the uploader. Sorry for not noticing the typo, I'll note to
double check this in the future :-)

I have run the autopkgtests on a bionic VM, which passed successfully. I
have done exploratory testing of the flatpak-builder CLI. And
autopkgtests in CI are now passing [3] [4]. Therefore I am marking this
as verification-done-bionic.

[Bug 1796193] [NEW] unattended do-release-upgrade asks about /etc/cron.daily/apt-compat

2018-10-04 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to do some automated testing that involved upgrading a system
from xenial to bionic, so I need it to not ask for user input.

Before running do-release-upgrade, the system got a fresh dist-upgrade
and reboot.

To avoid interactive responses, I'm using:
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d -f DistUpgradeViewNonInteractive

Part way through the upgrade, I do get prompted for something though:

What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:

Y or I : install the package maintainer's version

N or O : keep your currently-installed version

D : show the differences between the versions

Z : start a shell to examine the situation

The default action is to keep your current version.

Comparing the sha1 of apt-compat before the upgrade to another xenial
system that has been unmodified, they are the same:

In /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log, I also found this:

2018-10-04 Thread Thomas Sommer
Somebody already reported it to the dovecot mailing list:

It seems it's related to a glibc change.
Unfortunately there's no resolution.

[Bug 1796184] [NEW] opensc 0.17 doesn´t work with CardOS SmartCards

2018-10-04 Thread Pedram Hadjian
Public bug reported:

> lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release: 18.04

There is a known issue in opensc 0.16 and 0.17 with CardOS SmartCards.
This was fixed upstream with 0.18 and reported with other distros e.g.
Suse: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1100501

I added xenial repo and installed opensc-pkcs11=0.15.0-1ubuntu1 and
opensc=0.15.0-1ubuntu1 as a workaround and put those packages on hold.
Would be nice, if the fix was also available in Ubuntu.

[Bug 1771662] Re: [bionic] libvirtError: Node device not found: no node device with matching name

2018-10-04 Thread Radosław Biernacki
As this is my first post, I would like to say Hello to everybody.
Seems that you are trying to fix the same issue as we in Cavium/Linaro [1] and
therefore I would like to share with you with some findings, which I hope you
will find helpful. It's a rather long explanation ;)

So first of all, this issue is triggered by one of ThunderX SOC devices,
VNIC network device to be exact. It's PF does not expose netdev which
makes trouble for libvirt code.

It means there is no interface name at which PF device can be found under /sys
or pointed out using RTM_SETLINK message (there are some alternatives to that
but more over this latter).

I started to working on those [2] but ended up with quite invasive fixes
which for sure requires some discussion on libvirt-dev list (comments
for [2] more than welcome, I will also start RFC on libvirt-dev for
that).

The simple fix for this issue should:
- suppress the initialization error (more less this is what Dann Frazier does
in his patch [3] or I'm doing in first patch of the series of [2])
- fix some NULL reference bugs in libvirt (third and fourth patch in the series
[2]) so libvirt will not crash in case of config is given for VNIC
VF netdev, but just throw an error, that due to missing HW support it is not
able to configure the interface (I didn't introduced proper error messages yet
in my patch set).

That's the fast fix which I should be able to extract from my fixes
quite easily and it should be upstreamable.

---

Beside the libvirt, the for full fix the ThunderX VNIC kernel driver
need to be enhanced, as it currently does not support VLAN's and VF MAC
setting, which is essentially needed to make ThunderX VNIC a fully
supported device under libvirt. In fact this is the major part of the
work.

The true fix need:
- fix libvirt wrong assumptions about SRIOV netdevs and handling of VF->PF->VF
mapping by netdev names (instead pci BDF should be used in whole virtnetdev
layer or some non-netdev name, just generic dev related addressing scheme)
- fix libvirt PF VLAN and MAC handling code to use global port number instead
of PF name for RTM_SETLINK
- ThunderX VNIC driver need to support VLAN's per VF (MCAM) possibly with
dynamic VF creation as well as switchdev functionality (currently VF are
created basing on active port count read from BGX)

---

@dann I understand the idea in your patch (filtering out the
incompatible NIC's), but can You take a look at [4]?

Not sure what was exactly the intention of the code inside
virNetDevSwitchdevFeature(), but if you look at following line:
pci_device_ptr = pfname ? virNetDevGetPCIDevice(pfname) :
virNetDevGetPCIDevice(ifname);
It might suggest that the intention of author was that switch functionality
will be handled either by VF or PF.

Therefore I'm rather for option that the fix should ignore errors from
virNetDevGetPhysicalFunction(), which will leave pfname = NULL.

At the end (also in case of ThunderX which doe's not support ESWITCH) it
will give the same result as your patch (return 0) without introduction
of additional check/filtering function.

[Bug 1795289] Re: dphys-swapfile will not re-calculate swap file size or re-install

2018-10-04 Thread Axel Beckert

Hi,

Well, that's not exactly precise...

I doubt that it works now, i.e. that the correct calculations are done
now. It seems to just no more exit on failure anymore and hence hides
the actual problem (which IMHO is worse).

That's probably because it takes different code paths depending on the
swap file already existing or not.

Correct. _They_ are _erroring_ out, not /bin/sh. /bin/sh just exits
due to the error of something it called because it has been told so
with "set -e".

> So what I did is changed the shebang from /bin/sh to /bin/bash and added

The "let" is probably what makes the error go away because it probably
doesn't pass the exit code and hence dphys-swapfile doesn't exit
anymore on error in the calculations.

> Underneath is a copy of my fixed dphys-swapfile script from /sbin/dphys-

Please just send in a diff of your changes the next time.

Anyways, looking at https://askubuntu.com/q/1079860 this shows the
same symptoms as #1788681 (which has been reported against 18.04, but
so far only been fixed in cosmic with the upload of
dphys-swapfile/20100506-5) respectively the more detailed symptoms in
the according Debian bug report at https://bugs.debian.org/906767

The issue was caused by a more picky dc (the command used to do the
calculations) which was erroring out when piping a "q" command into
it.

Hence marking as duplicate of #1788681.

Regards, Axel

[Bug 1795343] Re: netplan backported on bionic (0.40~18.04.1) crash when there is an empty YAML configuration file

2018-10-04 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
** Description changed:

- Hello.
+ [Impact]
+ Any Netplan user leaving empty files in /etc/netplan.

- We see on our jenkins some failing tests on machines updated with the
- bionic-proposed repository.
-
- We found that netplan is crashing when there is an empty YAML
- configuration file.
-
- To reproduce:
+ [Test case]

  1) put a valid configuration under /etc/netplan/
  2) create an empty YAML file /etc/netplan/99-empty.yaml
  3) execute netplan apply
+
+ Validate that 'netplan apply' does not crash, and correctly applies the
+ configuration.
+
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Watch out for issues in merging netplan configuration or evaluating the parts
of configuration that can't be reverted safely, for the use of 'netplan try'.

[Bug 1794280] Re: gdm doesn't start on a fresh installation of Cosmic Desktop

2018-10-04 Thread Treviño
It still seem to crash in my kvm installation:

ubuntu@ubuntu-Standard-PC-i440FX-PIIX-1996:~$ apt-cache policy
xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
xserver-xorg-video-fbdev:
  Installed: 1:0.5.0-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:0.5.0-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.5.0-1ubuntu1 500
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu cosmic/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

See attached journalctl that includes the Xorg.log

It's also weird that using `std` driver works in live, while not once
installed.

[Bug 1795838] Re: upgrade from 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS fails

2018-10-04 Thread Sebastian via ubuntu-bugs
Hello Brian

Many thanks for your answer. Is it possible to somehow find out exactly
which PPA does make the trouble at upgrading ( is there any error log of
do-release-upgrade?) ?

Best regards

Sebastian

[Bug 1702151] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_is_fundamentally_a() from g_object_ref() from st_theme_get_custom_stylesheets()

2018-10-04 Thread Treviño
I agree, it's just quite hard to reproduce.

I've debugged it for a while, but really I don't see anything wrong in
st related to this. I'd need a core dump to be able to interact with gdb
better.
