[Bug 1769383] Re: Ubuntu dock/launcher is shown on the lock screen

2019-01-11 Thread Jesse
Yes, it's version 63ubuntu1.18.10.1. I just couldn't remember if that
was also the pre-update version number. But I guess it wouldn't have
pulled in the update if the version number wasn't different.

Don't forget to change the tags to verification-failed if the new
package doesn't fix the issue. From what you said it's still present, at
least for you.

[Bug 1810372] Re: Infinite busy-loop trying to cull when cache space is short

   Importance: Undecided => Medium

** Changed in: cachefilesd (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Medium

** Changed in: cachefilesd (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

A user reports that cachefilesd will spin at 100% of a cpu when started
on a filesystem where the free space is less than the bcull threshold
and culling the cache is insufficient to free up space.

Investigation shows that this is because cachefilesd detects that
culling is required, tries to cull, and does not realise that culling
cannot free up enough space, so just keeps retrying.

  [Test Case]

I created a VM with a spare disk, mounted it to /raid (or whatever).
I changed the /etc/default/cachefilesd to start at boot, filled the /raid
filesystem to over the bcull threshold, and started cachefilesd. When running
top, the cachefilesd process is at the top using approx 100% of 1 CPU. It
appears to be trying to free up space in the cache (that is not even used)
because the filesystem is over the threshold for culling.

  [Regression Potential]

The patch makes changes to how cachefilesd detects if it should sleep
or cull, so regressions would be in the area of cachefilesd spinning
instead of sleeping (which is what it does now) or sleeping instead
  of culling.

However the patch is small and easily understood and backports with
  minimal effort.

  [Other Info]

This is fixed upstream in 0.10.6:

  * Wed Feb 3 2016 David Howells  0.10.6-1
  ...
  - Suspend culling when cache space is short and cache objects are pinned.

The particular patch is ce353f5b6b5b ("cachefilesd can spin when disk
  space is short.")
+
+ Since bionic has version 0.10.10-0.1, this fix is needed only for xenial
+ and trusty.

[Bug 676486] Re: [needs-packaging] Apache Thrift

2019-01-11 Thread Tony Mancill
The Debian package is failing to build on Ubuntu with 1 test failure
that I don't yet grok. From the amd64 build logs:

make check-TESTS
make[8]: Entering directory '/<>/lib/c_glib/test'
/testserialization/StructReadWriteLengthShouldEqual:
(/<>/lib/c_glib/test/.libs/testserialization:27121):

'ThriftTransport'
/bin/bash: line 5: 27121 Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) ${dir}$tst
FAIL: testserialization

I'm wondering if this might a difference in the compiler flags used
between Ubuntu in Debian, but that's just a guess at this point. I'll
take a look, but it might not be until after the Debian Buster freeze.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2019-01-11 Thread Gustavo Niemeyer
Viktoria,

We have been working non-stop on snapd over those three years, including
features that will improve the situation for this folder. The fact it is
marked as Wishlist reflects more on the fact nothing is in fact broken,
other than you and me would both like to have a nicer folder structure.

The fact this bug has the most heat also reflects on how easy it is to have an
opinion about it
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_triviality).

Don't get me wrong, though. We will do better here for sure.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

@francescohickle15 People care about aesthetics. Many of them, including
me, uninstall snap because of this. You are right, this is not a bug.
This is bad design at the core of snap's architecture.

I'm also affected by this (Mellanox ConnectX-4).
Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS
kernel 4.15.0-42-generic
biosdevname 0.4.1-0ubuntu9

Is there a packaged version of biosdevname with the patch?
Why does Xenial from 2016 have a biosdevname from 2012?

There are lot newer versions of biosdevname at

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2019-01-11 Thread Thomas Maier
@muktupavels (#127): I do not have this bug in 18.04.1 LTS. My settings
persist over a restart.

One thing I noticed though is that the screens are reset every time when
switching to "Built-In Only" and then "Join Displays" via WindowsKey+p.
A workaround I found for this is to switch back to "External only" and
then to "Join displays". This restores the settings. Hope this saves
anyone some time.

[Bug 1809156] Re: E1000 guest to host escape

2019-01-11 Thread Martin Konrad
The package seems to work correctly. Note however that I had to confirm
to downgrade when installing the package on cosmic. Turns out something
is wrong with the version numbers in the changelog file:

$ zgrep virtualbox /usr/share/doc/virtualbox/changelog.Debian.gz | head -3
virtualbox (5.2.18-dfsg-2~ubuntu18.04.2) bionic-security; urgency=medium
virtualbox (5.2.18-dfsg-2~ubuntu18.04.1) bionic; urgency=medium
virtualbox (5.2.18-dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=medium

$ dpkg --compare-versions 5.2.18-dfsg-2~ubuntu18.04.1 lt
5.2.18-dfsg-2~ubuntu18.04.2  && echo OK || echo NOK
OK
$ dpkg --compare-versions 5.2.18-dfsg-2 lt 5.2.18-dfsg-2~ubuntu18.04.1 && echo
OK || echo NOK
NOK
$ dpkg --compare-versions 5.2.18-dfsg-2 lt 5.2.18-dfsg-2~ubuntu18.04.2 && echo
OK || echo NOK
NOK

Seems like this mistake crept into the previous version. We probably
can't fix the previous version number anymore but I would suggest to use
5.2.18-dfsg-3~ubuntu18.14.1 for this release to ensure the package
actually gets installed on our user's machines.

[Bug 1810372] Re: Infinite busy-loop trying to cull when cache space is short

2019-01-11 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

A user reports that cachefilesd will spin at 100% of a cpu when started
on a filesystem where the free space is less than the bcull threshold
and culling the cache is insufficient to free up space.

Investigation shows that this is because cachefilesd detects that
culling is required, tries to cull, and does not realise that culling
cannot free up enough space, so just keeps retrying.

- [Testing/Reproducing]
+ [Test Case]

I created a VM with a spare disk, mounted it to /raid (or whatever).
I changed the /etc/default/cachefilesd to start at boot, filled the /raid
filesystem to over the bcull threshold, and started cachefilesd. When running
top, the cachefilesd process is at the top using approx 100% of 1 CPU. It
appears to be trying to free up space in the cache (that is not even used)
because the filesystem is over the threshold for culling.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The patch makes changes to how cachefilesd detects if it should sleep
+ or cull, so regressions would be in the area of cachefilesd spinning
+ instead of sleeping (which is what it does now) or sleeping instead
+ of culling.
+
+ However the patch is small and easily understood and backports with
+ minimal effort.

  [Fix]

This is fixed upstream in 0.10.6:

  * Wed Feb 3 2016 David Howells  0.10.6-1
  ...
  - Suspend culling when cache space is short and cache objects are pinned.

The particular patch is ce353f5b6b5b ("cachefilesd can spin when disk
  space is short.")
-
- [Regression Potential]
- The patch is small and easily understood and backports with minimal effort.

doesn't seem to have got much user reporting so far so is probably not
worth SRUing to the LTS at this point. Thanks for the report and patch
though!

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2019-01-11 Thread Oleg
@francescohickle15, this is not "pure aesthetics".

Creating random folder in user's home directly, without user explicitly
requesting it is just bad design. Not giving user any option to
remove/move or even rename this folder is a horrible design choice and
has nothing to do with aesthetics. As many people here mentioned is has
multitude of negative consequences and I'm not sure why Snap developers
keep ignoring this critical issue while hiding behind "it is hard to fix
and we like it this way" argument.

  [Test Case]

- I created a VM with a spare disk, mounted it to /raid (or whatever).
- I changed the /etc/default/cachefilesd to start at boot, filled the /raid
filesystem to over the bcull threshold, and started cachefilesd. When running
top, the cachefilesd process is at the top using approx 100% of 1 CPU. It
appears to be trying to free up space in the cache (that is not even used)
because the filesystem is over the threshold for culling.
+ Create a trusty or xenial VM, and install cachefilesd. Using either a real
disk or loopback image, create a ext4 filesystem, and edit fstab to mount it at
/var/cache/fscache, e.g.:
+ $ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/cache.img bs=1024m count=1024
+ $ sudo losetup -f /cache.img
+ $ sudo losetup -a
+ $ sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/loop0 (note, adjust loop0 if needed)
+
+ edit fstab e.g.:
+ $ grep fscache /etc/fstab
+ /cache.img /var/cache/fscache ext4 defaults,loop,user_xattr 0 0
+
+ It's important to include the 'user_xattr' option as cachefilesd
+ requires that.
+
+ stop the cachefilesd service and move the fscache contents:
+ $ sudo service cachefilesd stop
+ $ cd /var/cache
+ $ sudo mkdir fscache2
+ $ sudo mv -vf fscache/* fscache2/
+ $ sudo mount fscache
+ $ sudo mv -vf fscache2/* fscache/
+ $ sudo rmdir fscache2
+
+ create a file to fill up the fscache space, e.g.:
+ $ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/cache/fscache/largefile.txt bs=1024k count=850
+ $ df /var/cache/fscache
+ Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
+ /dev/loop0999320 922896 7612 100% /var/cache/fscache
+
+ edit /etc/default/cachefilesd to uncomment 'RUN=yes', e.g.:
+ $ grep RUN /etc/default/cachefilesd
+ RUN=yes
+
+ reboot, or just restart cachefilesd service
+ $ sudo service cachefilesd start
+
+ check top
+ $ top
+
+ cachefilesd should be spinning, using 100% (or as much as it can) cpu
+ time.

  - Suspend culling when cache space is short and cache objects are pinned.

The particular patch is ce353f5b6b5b ("cachefilesd can spin when disk
  space is short.")

Since bionic has version 0.10.10-0.1, this fix is needed only for xenial
  and trusty.

[Bug 1809156] Re: E1000 guest to host escape

2019-01-11 Thread Eduardo dos Santos Barretto
Thanks for testing!!

Great catch on the versioning.

It actually needs to be 5.2.18-dfsg-2ubuntu18.14.2 (it could also be
5.2.18-dfsg-2ubuntu18.14.1, but I think this will be confusing for those
who check the changelog).

It can't be 5.2.18-dfsg-3~ubuntu18.14.1 because that would mean that we
are based on 5.2.18-dfsg-3 (which is probably a valid version on Debian
that is newer than what we have currently).

I will let you know again when bionic and cosmic hit the PPA.

Thanks

I can also confirm that this issue still occurs even with the version in

the text on the keyboard layout indicator sometimes disappears.

[Bug 1804841] Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.

2019-01-11 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I created a PPA for Bionic with the latest firmware (git of today) merged into
the Package version we have in Disco. That can be found at [1].
But even that didn't help - which means even the very latest upstream will not
fix the issue for us auto-magically.

[Bug 1804841] Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.

2019-01-11 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I thought it might be worth to try the other versions of the FW.
So I renamed the files like:
sudo mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-8265-36.ucode
/lib/firmware/DONOTLOAD-iwlwifi-8265-36.ucode

Eventually I ended up with:

I thought, well then I run it without recent FW load, but then the
wireless adapter doesn't initialize at all.

No chance to configure it in cmdline or UI tools.

Therefore it seems I know no way to get wireless to work at all on my T580 :-/
is there a Wireless dongle that works well with Linux?

If there is anything I can try to resolve this please let me know.

Re: [Bug 1810630] Re: Boot up is hung on a purple screen

2019-01-11 Thread Alexander A Theiler
Ok, so I totally reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04.1. On its first fresh boot ever,
it hung at the purple screen, before a login screen should have been
displayed. I was able to use the workaround for bug 1727356 by
uncommenting "WaylandEnable=false" and again rebooted. It still hung at
the purple screen, and no login screen was ever displayed. I checked to
ensure that no PPAs were installed, and there are 0 results.

The problem of hanging at a purple screen on boot continues despite a full,
fresh re-install of Ubuntu without any PPAs installed.

I have been able to boot fully into Ubuntu, so long as I have had a failed
boot before. Just like before.

I've created and attached new files of the same things you've asked for
before: my new failedboot.txt, and my new allpackages.txt. Is there
anything else you need to diagnose this problem?

Please advise.

Alex

[Bug 1805920] Re: iPXE ignores vlan 0 traffic

2019-01-11 Thread Vern Hart
I have run a test on cosmic. The test involved MAAS 2.4.3 installed on
bionic on 3 of the blades of the UCS chassis in the customer's data
center. I installed cosmic, 18.10 on a 4th blade and installed libvirt
and qemu-kvm and defined a VM similar to how maas defines VMs. with this
xml: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/yCTRGDjx2H/

$ lsb_release -d
Description:Ubuntu 18.10

The ipxe-qemu version installed from dist is:

1.0.0+git-20180124.fbe8c52d-0ubuntu4

The attached screenshot is of the failed pxe boot of the testipxe vm.

Added the ppa:andreserl/maas apt repo and installed ipxe-qemu which gave
me version:

1.0.0+git-20180124.fbe8c52d-0ubuntu2.2~18.04.1

Note that I had to edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/andreserl-ubuntu-maas-
cosmic.list replacing "cosmic" with "bionic" because that repo doesn't
have cosmic packages. And then I had to downgrade the ipxe-qemu because
the cosmic version is greater than the one in the fix repo:

# apt install ipxe-qemu=1.0.0+git-20180124.fbe8c52d-
0ubuntu2.2~18.04.1

Once I jumped through those hoops, I booted the exact same testipxe vm
that failed to pxe boot above and it succeeded in getting an IP and
commission in MAAS.

[Bug 1804841] Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.

2019-01-11 Thread Seth Forshee
@Emmanuel: We generally only update firmware in stable releases in
response to specific issues, as new firmware sometimes introduces
regressions. Besides, ucode version 34 is the newest supported in the
4.15-based kernel in 18.04.

@UrkoM: When you say wifi used to be stable, was that prior to upgrading
to bionic? Because the firmware version you're using looks to be the
same one that bionic released with, so there were no updates which could
have caused regressions.

[Bug 1710390] Re: iwlwifi: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2019-01-11 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
This is actually about two bugs in one and related to bug 1804841
Lets disambiguate them.

One can be avoided by a config in network-manager as mentioned in comment #19
Lets handle this bug here as "that one" - at least in Bionic and later - fixed
by being set by default.

This was initially fixed in 1.12.4-1ubuntu1
>From changelog:
- NetworkManager.conf: disable MAC randomization feature. There is no
easy way for desktop users to disable this feature yet. And there are
reports that it doesn't work well with some systems.
And also became part of Bionic in 1.10.6-2ubuntu1

I'm marking this bug fixed since Bionic due to that.

---

Everyone else still affected despite this workaround has another yet
unclarified issue.
This shall be tracked in bug 1804841

[Bug 1807974] Re: Wireless regularly breaking (ath10k firmware crashed!) after upgrade to Cosmic

2019-01-11 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
I think the firmware is the same, so only the board-2.bin file needs to
be copied.

I am still seeing the issue with new board-2.bin.

[Bug 1806510] Re: regression on bionic

2019-01-11 Thread Andrey de Oliveira via ubuntu-bugs
Hello,

I had the same problem here installing guacamole package on a clean
install of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS via apt install guacamole.

Apparently the problem occurs because two required packages are not as
dependencies and the post-run scripts are not creating some essential
symbolic links

Correction:
Install libactivation-java and libstax-java packages that in my understanding
should be as dependency:

apt install guacamole libactivation-java libstax-java

Create the symbolic links below:

ln -s ../../../../java/javax.activation-1.2.0.jar
/usr/share/guacamole/guacamole/WEB-INF/lib/javax.activation-1.2.0.jar
ln -s ../../../../java/jaxb-core.jar
/usr/share/guacamole/guacamole/WEB-INF/lib/jaxb-core.jar
ln -s ../../../../java/jaxb-api.jar
/usr/share/guacamole/guacamole/WEB-INF/lib/jaxb-api.jar

Restart tomcat8
systemctl restart tomcat8

That's all, folks.
