@stephenholden could you provide: 1) details on your connection type (pop/imap), server and port (in my case this was pop to pop.verizon.net on port 995). 2) output of "dpkg -l | grep gnutls" 3) test my server using "gnutls-cli pop.verizon.net:995" (you may need to install the gnutls-bin package) and let me know if you see the error or a message that ends with "+OK Hello from jpop-0.1" I just tried with the proposed repo and was able to connect, details in another comment. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1876286 Title: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation." [Bug 1884583] [NEW] vim is dependent on libcanberra0 in Ubuntu 20.04, had no such dependency in Ubuntu 18.04
Public bug reported: which pulls in libasound and some alsa packages which I am not sure why it is useful and desired on most text-only/headless systems. In Debian I also see this dependency arisen with Bullseye/testing and Sid/unstable (but not with Buster/stable) but I don't see any mention of this introduction and its usefulness in the package's changelog. Could the reason of this dependency creation please be investigated, its usefulness evaluated, and if possible, this dependency to be made optional for vim builds ? Surprisingly, installing vim-nox also pulls in libcanberra0. vim-tiny does not pull in libcanberra0, but it also does not have syntax highlighting. What should I do to have syntax highlighting without libcanberra0 overhead ? ** Affects: vim (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1884583 Title: vim is dependent on libcanberra0 in Ubuntu 20.04, had no such dependency in Ubuntu 18.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vim/+bug/1884583/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1882986] Re: open-iscsi is slowing down the boot process
Hello again @Zakhar, It could be, I'll verify. There is also something else: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-iscsi/+bug/1877617 We can now configure auto-scan not to scan LUNs when the daemon starts (per openstack's teams requests). So with that, and your feedback (pointing out to LP: #1755858), I'm taking this under my assignment for part of this week's work (since I'm syncing new upstream release on Debian and merging in Ubuntu 20.10 soon). [Bug 1882986] Re: open-iscsi is slowing down the boot process
Thanks a lot Rafael. Unlike bug #1877617, I don't have a fix to propose for the regression on LP: #1755858, sorry! Disabling services is a workaround for me... but definitely not a fix! My initial "enhancement" report was a little bit more specific, and not sure it will be fixed. iscsi services work normally in 2 situations: - you have some LUNs you need mounted at startup (in this case you HAVE to wait anyway) - you have no nodes at all... that's where LP: #1755858 should have fixed things and not triggered the "slow bits". I am in a third situation - I have some nodes, but none in automatic (ie not needed at startup). Would the new auto-scan help (not sure to completely understand what it does!)? I am in the exact same situation with my NFS mounts (also on my NAS), they are defined in /etc/fstab, but with the options 'noauto' and 'user' meaning they are NOT needed at startup, the the user can mount them later. With that config in /etc/fstab, NFS runs its service (RPCbind) without damaging the boot performance. As soon as I declare one of the NFS mounts as 'auto' instead, I observe the same delay on the boot, but it's normal since we now expect some NFS mounts to be there at startup. Ideally, the same would suit me for iscsi! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1882986 Title: open-iscsi is slowing down the boot process To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-iscsi/+bug/1882986/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Steps to reproduce the problem: I am trying to setup my printer via wifi. 1) I run hp-setup from the terminal. 2) I select the 'Wireless/802.11' option and click next. 3) I plug my printer in via usb cable and press next. 4) My printer is recognized and I press next. 5) An error dialog pops up saying "An I/O error occurred. Please check the USB connection to your printer and try again. (Device I/O error)". Moreover, the terminal displays a 'Channel write error'. (please see the attached screenshot). Please find attached the results of the hp-check.log file; it is worth noting that a warning message is displayed in the file indicating that Ubuntu 20.04 is not supported. Regarding the Missing Required Dependencies via the hp-check.log file: libcups2 - is installed. python3-pyqt4 - has been replaced with python3-pyqt5 gtk2-engines-pixbuf - is installed. I am able to set up the printer with hp-setup when selecting the USB option. I am able to print but not scan. I have previously installed the hplip package via the automatic installer on the HP website (https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging- and-printing), but this didn't work either. Important to note that the automatic installer does not support Ubuntu 20.04, so no surprise there. [Bug 691590] Re: libvirt restore exactly the old ownership of images
I upload to a PPA and test against that when doing bigger changes. Only when everything works there the same thing is uploaded to the -dev release. I agree to the "many small changes" theory in general, except for things that either: - a) are used in many other tests (which means breaking these breaks a lot) or - b) require a rather intensive testing (then there is an efficiency gain to batch to some extend) In this case it is even a+b which makes me be careful. If not for me being away in 10 days for a while I'd not be too concerned as it could be reverted. You know what, I can throw it in a PPA and if magically everything works fine (after all most tests are automated - it is all the special cases that might happen which make this a real effort) without hickups I'll consider an earlier upload. Consider it a favor for your old work :-) I'll let you know how things turn out ... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/691590 Title: libvirt restore exactly the old ownership of images To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/libvirt/+bug/691590/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Did you find a way around this? If not, can you provide "systemctl -a"? [Bug 1718658] Re: ecryptfs-mount-private fails to initialize ecryptfs keys
I hate to say this, folks, but ecryptfs looks like a dead end for us. It's no longer supported by Ubuntu (the package has been moved to the Universe repo). Also, the problem at hand is caused by systemd, which is run by a man famous for releasing poorly-vetted, system-breaking software, and then refusing to fix the damage he causes. For a year or so, I maintained a systemd patch to work around this bug. (It is posted above, but no longer applies to current systemd code.) There was a time when it looked like the problem was finally fixed upstream, but then it just broke again. Anyone who (like me) has been using ecryptfs to encrypt a private directory and unlock it only when needed, might consider switching to gocryptfs. From a user's point of view, it works similarly to ecryptfs. There's also a handy GUI called SiriKali that works with it. https://nuetzlich.net/gocryptfs/ https://mhogomchungu.github.io/sirikali/ Good luck. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1718658 Title: ecryptfs-mount-private fails to initialize ecryptfs keys To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+bug/1718658/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Users are unable to get to their email. The underlying problem is that GnuTLS does not support zero length session tickets. The fix works by checking that that ticket_len > 0 prior to calling gnutls_realloc_fast(). Nominating for SRU, fulfills: "Updates that need to be applied to Ubuntu packages to adjust to changes in the environment, server protocols, web services, and similar, i. e. where the current version just ceases to work." [testcase] GnuTLS 3.6: $ gnutls-cli --priority=NORMAL:-VERS-TLS1.3 pop.verizon.net:995 [...] - Status: The certificate is trusted. *** Fatal error: Internal error in memory allocation. the error should be fixed with the update GnuTLS 3.5: $ gnutls-cli pop.verizon.net:995 GnuTLS 3.4: $ gnutls-cli -p 995 pop.verizon.net [regression potential] The fix works by checking that that ticket_len > 0 prior to calling gnutls_realloc_fast(). This creates two separate execution paths: 1) If the session ticket length > 0, which is the primary use case, the original code block will be executed. 2) If the session ticket len is 0, then the original code block will be skipped. Testing will need to include connections to servers that return session ticket length > 0 as well as ones that return session ticket length of 0. Wireshark can be used to look at the NewSessionTicket handshake message to confirm the session ticket length. [Other Info] The GnuTLS project's merge request 1260 fixes this bug. It was reviewed and approved by Daiki Ueno: https://gitlab.com/gnutls/gnutls/-/merge_requests/1260 According to the GnuTLS project: "We utilize two continuous integration systems, the gitlab-ci and travis. Gitlab-CI is used to test most of the Linux systems (see .gitlab-ci.yml), and is split in two phases, build image creation and compilation/test. The build image creation is done at the gnutls/build-images subproject and uploads the image at the gitlab.com container registry. The compilation/test phase is on every commit to gnutls project." It's the usual catch with unprivileged containers only being able to lower their limits and never raise them so there's nothing we can really do about it in LXD. ** Changed in: lxd (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1868456 Title: "sudo: setrlimit(RLIMIT_CORE): Operation not permitted" error when using sudo in 20.04 LXD container To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxd/+bug/1868456/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1884293] Re: Update to maintenance release v3.9.1
** Description changed: [Impact] sosreport 3.9.1 is now released. It would be great to find sosreport v3.9.1 in supported stable releases, and active development release considering the fact that the releases (especially LTSes) are going to be supported for a couple of years. Sosreport is widely used by Canonical support team (and mission critical) to troubleshoot UA (Ubuntu Advantage) customer, partners, community users, and so on. Just like we did for : - v3.5 (LP: #1734983) - v3.6 (LP: #1775195) - v3.9 (LP: #1862830) [Test Case] * Install sosreport * Run sosreport in different customer scenarios: server, desktop, cloud, hypervisor, instance (container, vm), physical server, ... * Extract archive and look at the content, look for 0 size file (and use common sense if legit or not) * Look under "sos_reports" for full report. * Look under "sos_logs" for warnings/errors. $ grep -v "INFO:" sos_logs/sos.log * Run "simple.sh": A quick port of the travis tests to bash. Generating various type of sosreports collection (which is part of the autopkgtest (d/test/simple.sh) now. * Perform some dog fooding test routines (--all-logs, --upload, looking sosreport archive content, ... and so on) + * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SosreportUpdates + [Regression Potential] Sosreport, as of today, has 300 plugins that are all configured differently and configured to run under certain conditions. We can't test all possible scenarios. All we can do is identify the most common, important and Ubuntu/Canonical related one and test them (e.g. Openstack*, juju, MAAS, kernel, ...). With that being said, it is definitely possible that certain plugins may not work as expected, but the risk will be very low (e.g. not collecting the desired information) and isolated to this specific plugin. It shouldn't affect the other plugins nor core functionalities of sosreport. [Bug 1884588] [NEW] Certificate problems sending mail
Public bug reported: Since the update to mutt-1.9.4-3ubuntu0.2 I see certificate errors when sending mail. I use letsencrypt certificates. Initially the cert is accepted, but later on I see different kind of errors on multiple tries to send mail. Before the update, sending mail worked fine. IMAP is still working without any problems. I get 3 different error messages in a random order: # Warning: Server certificate was signed using an insecure algorithm Could not negotiate TLS connection # This certificate belongs to: Let's Encrypt Authority X3 Let's Encrypt US This certificate was issued by: DST Root CA X3 Digital Signature Trust Co. I cannot permanently accept the certificate for sending, but if i temporary accept it, mail is send ok. I wonder why there show different messages when trying to send an email? Why does it sometimes show a "Server certificate has been revoked" warning? If you need additional information, I will try to provide them. [Bug 1884591] [NEW] File "catalina.out" not being created/populated when using Tomcat 9.0.31 + Ubuntu 20.04, and content goes to the Ubuntu syslog instead
Public bug reported: Hello, I have been using Tomcat for about 18 years (several versions). As far as I can remember, everything that I leave on the log with System.out.println() has been found inside the file "catalina.out", which has been nice. However, this seems to have changed. I just migrated to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS + Tomcat 9.0.31, and installed Tomcat doing a "sudo apt install tomcat9". Now I see that the file "catalina.out" never gets created, and that everything that had been sent there is now being sent to the Ubuntu/Linux/Debian log "syslog". I don't like that, I want to keep having a separate/dedicated log for Tomcat (which is something I check very often) and not havoing to search for it inside syslog (which is something I rarely inspect). I think this is a bug. I have done some research, and this is what I have discovered (if I understood everything correctly): - Tomcat now runs as a service inside something called "systemsd" - For some reason, the people at Ubuntu/Debian/Linux decided that Tomcat's log should be found inside syslog, instead of staying independent inside "catalina.out". Why is that? I don't know and it doesn't make sense. - The other files inside /var/log/tomcat get created, including the "catalina.-MM-DD.log" files. But I dont' find my "System.out.println()" messages there, which has always been the case. - I have found, however, that syslog tries to create and populate the "catalina.out" file as well, since I have found an error inside syslog that says something like "rsyslogd: file '/var/log/tomcat9/catalina.out': open error: Permission denied". - I have also found a file "/etc/rsyslog.d/tomcat9.conf" which, indeed, seams to indicate syslog that the file "/var/log/tomcat9/catalina.out" must be populated. Which makes sense and should solve my needs. - Considering the "Permission denied" error message, I started playing with the permissions (something that I really don't have much experience with). If I remember correctly, I created the file "catalina.out" manually, and the modified its properties so the owners are "tomcat/adm", since the "syslog" process/user seems to be inside the "adm" group. Restarted everything... and the "catalina.out" file got created and populated!!! So it seems that the main obstacle here is a lack of correct permissions so syslog can do what has been told and populate the "catalina.out" file. Did I get it right? - However, when I delete all the log files (which I do every once in a while), the permissions that I assigned get lost and the file doesn't get created anymore. In addition, when I restart Ubuntu the permissions that I set get lost. What are we supposed to do to deal with this problem? Can/should we do something so the Tomcat log doesn't go to syslog? If not, and considering that it seems that syslog is trying to populate the "catalina.out" file as it has been told, what should we do to correct the permissions problem to solve this bug? Thanks in advance! ** Affects: tomcat9 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1884591 Title: File "catalina.out" not being created/populated when using Tomcat 9.0.31 + Ubuntu 20.04, and content goes to the Ubuntu syslog instead To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1884591/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1881632] Re: esm security updates not reported by apt update-notifier
By checking an update against ESM_ORIGINS, the current patch is aggregating esm security updates for both infra and apps, but the output summary at the end is explicit about infra: """ 3 of these updates are provided through UA Infrastructure ESM. """ We should either count them separately, and issue separate sentences, or, as I would prefer, just remove "Infrastructure" from the sentence above.
