[Bug 1922277] [NEW] Feature Request: UbuntuCore20 - snap set command to configure journald

2021-04-01 Thread Angela Piotrowski
Public bug reported:

Request:

Similar to documented [1] snap set commands, could there be a
configuration parameter available to limit log storage to 512MB?

[1] - https://snapcraft.io/docs/system-options#heading--journal-
persistent

Workaround used (but would prefer a snap set command for this
functionality):

Clean the logs to the requested size utilizing the journalctl vacuum
capabilities, for example:
journalctl --vacuum-size=512M

If you have access to edit /etc/systemd/journald.conf file you could set
the parameter SystemMaxUse= to 512M, however in Ubuntu Core this may be
read-only and unalterable. If that is the case use a systemd timer or
cron job to manage the file size with the journalctl command provided
above.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Project changed: brz => ubuntu

[Bug 1922242] Re: openafs/1.6.15-1ubuntu1 ADT test failure with linux/4.4.0-207.239

2021-04-01 Thread Kleber Sacilotto de Souza
** Description changed:

- This is a scripted bug report about ADT failures while running openafs
- tests for linux/4.4.0-207.239 on xenial. Whether this is caused by the
- dep8 tests of thetested source or the kernel has yet to be determined.
+ [Impact]
+ autopkgtest caught a build failure with openafs-modules-dkms with the
xenial/linux kernel currently in -proposed (4.4.0-207.239).

  Testing failed on:
  amd64:

[-Werror=implicit-function-declaration]

  ^
cc1: some warnings being treated as errors

+ This was caused by commit "fs: Give dentry to inode_change_ok() instead
+ of inode" applied to xenial/linux as part of the fixes for
+ CVE-2015-1350, which renamed inode_change_ok() to setattr_prepare().

- This was caused by commit "fs: Give dentry to inode_change_ok() instead of
inode" applied to xenial/linux as part of the fixes for CVE-2015-1350, which
renamed inode_change_ok() to setattr_prepare().
+ [Fix]
+ The proposed fix is to cherry-pick commit
8aeb711eeaa5ddac5a74c354091e2d4f7ac0cd63 "Linux 4.9: inode_change_ok() becomes
setattr_prepare()" from openafs repository (git://git.openafs.org/openafs.git).
+
+ [Test]
+ Install openafs-modules-dkms on a xenial system running an older kernel
without the interface change (<4.4.0-207) and with a newer kernel with the
interface change (>=4.4.0-207). The openafs module should be built and loaded
with all kernels.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ The fix is based on the detection made during build time of the function
available on the kernel headers. If the detection doesn't work correctly the
build would fail.

** Patch added: "debdiff for openafs on xenial version 1.6.15-1ubuntu2"

[Bug 1922276] [NEW] Select All (Shift+Ctrl+A) followed by Copy (Shift+Ctrl+C) copies only visible part of terminal output

2021-04-01 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Have Ubuntu MATE 21.04 installed (or use Live session)
2. Launch MATE Terminal
3. Enable infinite history (Edit - Profile Preferences - Scrolling, Scrollback
- Unlimited)
4. Execute command with long output such as `journalctl | cat`
5. Select Edit - Select All (or press ++), then Edit - Copy (or
press ++)
6. Open Pluma text editor and paste just copied terminal output

Expected results:
* whole terminal output is copied - staring by `user@host:~$ journalctl | cat`
and ending by `user@host:~$`

Actual results:
* only last 15 lines were copied (depends on terminal size)

[Bug 1913951] Re: ca-certificates: Symantec CA blacklisted for non-TLS uses

2021-04-01 Thread Loic Sharma
Hello,

Will Ubuntu hirsute be affected by this bug? For context, Network
Security Services (NSS) 3.63 and newer distrusts Symantec which will
cause failures when installing NuGet packages. As per this question,
Ubuntu contains NSS 3.63 in hirsute-proposed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ca-
certificates/+question/696339

For more information, please see:

[Bug 1915887] Re: systemd spams the syslog about lack of native systemd unit file

2021-04-01 Thread Dan Streetman
In Groovy for 'legacy directory' logs, with
/lib/systemd/system/dbus.socket manually edited to use /var/run... path
to reproduce error, with current version logs seen e.g.:

Apr 01 17:02:34 lp1915887-g systemd[1]:
/lib/systemd/system/dbus.socket:5: ListenStream= references a path below
legacy directory /var/run/, updating /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket →
/run/dbus/system_bus_socket; please update the unit file accordingly.

with -proposed version, those logs are not present.

[Bug 1922232] Re: Unable to upgrade from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04.2

2021-04-01 Thread Queen
I had exactly the same problem, the system did not want to update in any
way, and there were messages on the command line that such an update was
not possible for some reasons. Therefore, I downloaded the .iso file
with system 20.04.2 and installed the system again from this file.

[Bug 1775131] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 networking issue (connection drops after approx. 15 minutes)

2021-04-01 Thread Christopher Trahey
Also observing this in 20.04.2 (kernel 5.4.0-70).
I will try swapping out physical transceivers on both ends of the link and a
new switch port...

Of particular interest to me, netplan does not appear to re-run when
this happens. I have a device renaming rule that matches on name, sets
IP, and sets name. This device never comes back up unless I manually run
netplan apply (which is always successful, but obvs. untenable). The
root device (eno2) is not even listed in `ip link` output during the
incident.

Please advise what logging/information I can provide to help track down
culprit.

[Bug 1922266] [NEW] eth0 interface name change fails on Pi 3/3+

2021-04-01 Thread Dave Jones
Public bug reported:

The netplan configuration in ubuntu-raspi-settings (and more widely, the
network-config in the gadget used on the server images) fails to rename
the internal ethernet interface on Pi 3B and 3B+ models from "en" to "eth0". In the netplan case this is because the driver
matching logic doesn't handle space-separate driver matches (although
the underlying networkd system does); in the cloud-init case it simply
refuses to rename interfaces that aren't matched by full MAC address.

The intended fix is to stop attempting to do this via netplan or cloud-
init, and simply handle this via a networkd .link file in ubuntu-raspi-
settings. This will require an update to the relevant seeds as this
package is currently only pulled into ubuntu-desktop-raspi, not ubuntu-
server-raspi.

[Bug 1922260] Re: `make olddefconfig` results in a kernel missing support for touchpad and wifi

2021-04-01 Thread Mihir Mehta
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I currently use Groovy (20.10) on an HP Pavilion x360 laptop; the
wireless card is a Realtek 8821ce. For over a year, I've depended on an
unofficial wireless driver from GitHub for lack of kernel support.
However, the release candidates for Linux 5.12 that came out recently
have begun to include support for this card, which motivated me to
  download and compile v5.12-rc5.

There are various resources on AskUbuntu and the Ubuntu website itself
providing instructions on how an upstream kernel can be compiled and installed;
I will skip the details unless asked. The basic commands I used were:
  cp /boot/config-5.8.0-48-generic .config
  time make -j9 olddefconfig bindeb-pkg
followed by "dpkg -i" for the headers and the image. I rebooted and entered a
kernel supporting neither my touchpad nor my wireless card.

I poked around a little and realised that olddefconfig is somehow
excluding kernel modules which support the above two hardware
components. I edited the .config file manually to indiscriminately
enable everything pertaining to HID and RTL8821, and compiled a kernel
  that does work.

Therefore, the bug I am requesting to be fixed is the omission of
necessary kernel configuration options on the default
/boot/config-5.8.0-48-generic file. The fix I am requesting is the
inclusion of these options, although I'm not sure from looking at
/proc/modules which ones they are. So in the attachment section I'm
going to reproduce the contents of /proc/modules and both kernel configs
  - this will all be in one file because I cannot seem to upload multiple
attachments. Hopefully, this will be enough for the issue to be fixed so
that the many users of the RTL8821ce chip can switch over to a suitable
kernel sooner rather than later (which will apparently be some time
after Ubuntu Hirsute ships with Linux 5.10.)

To address the bug reporting guidelines below:
  1. Description: Ubuntu 20.10
  Release: 20.10
  2. linux-image-5.8.0-48-generic:
Installed: 5.8.0-48.54
Candidate: 5.8.0-48.54
Version table:
   *** 5.8.0-48.54 500
  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-updates/main amd64
Packages
  500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-security/main amd64
Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
  3. I expected to be able to compile the kernel with the necessary modules.
  4. I compiled a kernel with no support for my touchpad or my wireless card.

  Thanks,
  Mihir.

[Bug 1922130] Re: Request addition of Fedora / Redhat "sftp-force-permissions" patch

2021-04-01 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Mark and thanks for this bug report. I can see how the flag
introduced by the "sftp-force-permissions" patch could come handy,
however I doubt we are going to include in the Ubuntu package unless
there's a compelling reason for doing so. And if such a compelling
reason did exist, then I think it should be brought to the attention of
the upstream openssh developers, without delivering the functionality
with a distribution specific patch.

My suggestion here is to:

 - Poke upstream about this. Note that they may have a good rationale
for *not* including the patch, given that it's small and they didn't
already do so.

 - File a bug in Debian. The Ubuntu openssh package is almost a sync
from Debian, which is another good reason to avoid including an
additional delta to it, with all its long-term implications (old
memories here: [1]). If Debian includes the patch then Ubuntu will pick
it up with the following package syncs or merges.

I'm going to triage this as a Wishlist bug for now. This is not a final
word, but I doubt the importance of this bug is likely to be bumped
without a compelling use case that would be enabled by adding the patch.

[Bug 1922186] Re: ibus very difficult to restart

That confuses me. I see that you use an XFCE desktop, and the only icon
you should have AFAIK is "IBus Preferences" which starts a GUI for
certain settings. Quitting that should only quit "IBus Preferences"
while ibus-daemon should keep running.

If you have something else, can you please take a screenshot to show us
what it looks like.

ibus-daemon is not an application. It's a background process, and on
Debian/Ubuntu it's started silently at login while a few related
environment variables are set.

If you want to use some other IM framework, e.g. Fcitx or uim, you can
tell the system so in "Language Support", and after next reboot it will
start Fcitx or uim at login instead and assign other values to the
related variables.

Right, if the ibus-daemon process is not running, "ibus restart" won't
help. But there are 'crashes' which don't kill ibus-daemon, and then
"ibus restart" often helps.

[Bug 1922260] [NEW] `make olddefconfig` results in a kernel missing support for touchpad and wifi

2021-04-01 Thread Mihir Mehta
Public bug reported:

I currently use Groovy (20.10) on an HP Pavilion x360 laptop; the
wireless card is a Realtek 8821ce. For over a year, I've depended on an
unofficial wireless driver from GitHub for lack of kernel support.
However, the release candidates for Linux 5.12 that came out recently
have begun to include support for this card, which motivated me to
download and compile v5.12-rc5.

There are various resources on AskUbuntu and the Ubuntu website itself
providing instructions on how an upstream kernel can be compiled and installed;

Release:20.10
2. linux-image-5.8.0-48-generic:
  Installed: 5.8.0-48.54
  Candidate: 5.8.0-48.54
  Version table:
 *** 5.8.0-48.54 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-updates/main amd64
Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-security/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3. I expected to be able to compile the kernel with the necessary modules.
4. I compiled a kernel with no support for my touchpad or my wireless card.

Thanks,
Mihir.

PS: I'm also willing to make a patch myself if someone can help me
identify the components the patch is for!

[Bug 1922257] [NEW] brcmfmac43430-sdio.clm_blob needs to be diverted

2021-04-01 Thread Juerg Haefliger
Public bug reported:

A recent update of linux-firmware 'fixed' dangling symlinks and now the
raspi kernel tries to load brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.clm_blob from the
linux-firmware package but uses the FW blob brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.bin
from the linux-firmware-raspi2 package. The two don't play well
together:

$ sudo dmesg | grep brcm
[ 17.643748] brcmfmac: F1 signature read @0x1800=0x1541a9a6
[ 17.663790] brcmfmac: brcmf_fw_alloc_request: using brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio
for chip BCM43430/1
[ 17.676701] usbcore: registered new interface driver brcmfmac
[ 17.961711] brcmfmac: brcmf_fw_alloc_request: using brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio
for chip BCM43430/1
[ 17.979586] ieee80211 phy0: brcmf_c_process_clm_blob: clmload (4733 byte
file) failed (-52)
[ 17.992680] ieee80211 phy0: brcmf_c_preinit_dcmds: download CLM blob file
failed, -5
[ 18.002651] ieee80211 phy0: brcmf_bus_started: failed: -5
[ 18.010267] ieee80211 phy0: brcmf_attach: dongle is not responding: err=-5
[ 18.059280] brcmfmac: brcmf_sdio_firmware_callback: brcmf_attach failed

The FW blob from linux-firmware-raspi already contains CLM data and
doesn't need to load a dedicated blob. In fact it must not, so linux-
firmware-raspi2 needs to divert brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.clm_blob from
the linux-firmware package.

[Bug 1921983] Re: libpcap pcap_findalldevs_ex funtion not correct

2021-04-01 Thread Paride Legovini
Thank you for your report.

If I understand correctly you are trying to compile something from
source, and the compilation doesn't work anymore on Focal, while it did
on Bionic. This might be because the libpcap package got updated and
it's not compatible anymore with your codebase. However in this case the
problem you're facing can't be considered a bug in Ubuntu. You can find
pointers to get help for this sort of problem here:
https://ubuntu.com/support/community-support

If it turns out that your issue is a bug in Ubuntu, then we need a full
bug report please. Until then, we can't make any progress on this
report, and you won't find many people who can help you here - we have
better venues where there is a community willing to help - see the link
above.

If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 1922186] Re: ibus very difficult to restart

2021-04-01 Thread DarkTrick
> It's not clear to me why you would want to kill the ibus-daemon
process in the first place

I would say that's no valid argument because:
1) It has a "Quit" option. If you should not quit it, there should be no "Quit"
option in the menu.
2) ibus is not system critical. Non-system critical processes should be
restartable

> it differs depending on the desktop environment.
I appreciate the commands, but why should I as user need to care about that?

> In situations where ibus crashes somehow, and IM inputting stops working, you
> normally can do:
> ibus restart

1) I did not have crashes since 20.04. However, in crashes in 18.xx I remember
that `ibus restart` would simply tell me "there is no running instance" and do
nothing.
2) Why can't this happen, when I call ibus from application menu?

[Bug 1915887] Re: systemd spams the syslog about lack of native systemd unit file

2021-04-01 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

  [impact]

systemd spams journal with log messages

  [test case]

see journalctl output and search for msgs similar to those listed in
- original description below
+ original description below; specifically messages containing text with
+ "below legacy directory /var/run/" or "lacks a native systemd unit file"

  [regression potential]

any regession would likely result in logs incorrectly not logged when
detecting a problem such as lack of native unit file, or using /var/run.

  [scope]

  this is needed in f/g

this is fixed upstream with commit https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-
  team/systemd/-/commit/0c6d90f783093fc255e529f8a33b2ed2a8e6c2d6 from
debian, which is included in 247.3-2 and later so this is fixed in
  hirsute already (in -proposed package).

these log messages aren't present in b or earlier so aren't needed in
  x/b

  [original description]

systemd in hirsute spams the syslog file several times per second about
services lacking native systemd unit files. Two things should happen.

  1) a systemd unit file ought to be created
  2) systemd should be slowed down with regards to these messages

[Bug 1916469] Re: Apps don't use Wayland by default

2021-04-01 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Łukasz: this change makes firefox (and thunderbird) a native Wayland
client application when run under Wayland, as opposed to using XWayland.
Functionally, there shouldn't be any difference, but visual/perceived
performance should be better.

I did as requested. The konsole output is attached as simple-scan-output.txt.

Not all output was saved - the konsole seems to retain only a certain amount of

[Bug 1873922] Re: 20.04 not compatible with virtualbox-guest-x11: Fails changing display

2021-04-01 Thread Forest Darling
I am running Xubuntu 20.04 as both my host and guest, and I ran into
this same issue. The root cause is that GCC is missing in the guest,
which is required to build the kernel modules. You can install it using
this command:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Once it's installed, you need to at least attempt rebuilding the kernel
modules:

sudo /sbin/rcvboxadd quicksetup all

NOTE: previous versions of VirtualBox used the following command
instead:

sudo /sbin/vboxconfig

If trying to rebuild the modules doesn't work, try reinstalling
VirtualBox Guest Additions entirely (run these inside of the mounted
Guest Additions ISO directory):

cd /media/*/*/
sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

Here are my software versions for reference:

On the host (Xubuntu 20.04):

lsb_release -r
Release:20.04

dpkg -l virtualbox virtualbox-guest-additions-iso
virtualbox 6.1.16-dfsg-6~ubuntu1.20.04.1
virtualbox-guest-additions-iso 6.1.16-1~ubuntu1.20.04.1

VirtualBox version from Help->About Dialog:
6.1.16_Ubuntu r140961

On the guest (Xubuntu 20.04):

lsb_release -r
20.04

VBoxClient --version
6.1.16r140961

gcc --version
9.3.0
