[Bug 71476] Re: Video scaling in totem is unclean

2006-12-15 Thread Sebastian Dröge
You probably use xvimagesink on arch linux and ximagesink on Ubuntu for
some reason... but this is just a guess.

When you run gstreamer-properties, which video output is selected?
Does it work when you change to XWindow System (X11/Xshm/Xv) and click
on test?

[Bug 75858] png to postscript - black image

2006-12-15 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

When trying to postscript-print certain PNG images, I get a completely
black document instead of the image.

This bug appears to be in Ubuntu - Edgy Eft, back in Dapper Drake
everything works fine.

Here are 2 test cases:

Open the png images using the standard gnome image viewer (which is EOG
for me)

http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/good.png
http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/bad.png

Print them using the Generic Postscript printer, Location File. I
get a good postscript when printing good.png, and a black document
when printing bad.png using Edgy, where Dapper works fine.

The postscript output files are:
http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/dapper.ps.gz
http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/edgy.ps.gz

Where Edgy users see a black document on both postscripts, Dapper users
see a normal image when opening dapper.ps.gz but also a black document
when opening edgy.ps.gz

Maybe its a more global bug in the postscript system?

[Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left

2006-12-15 Thread Martin Magnusson
This happens to me as well. It started after I ran several recommended
updates this Monday; most notably xorg and xserver-xorg from version
1:7.1.1ubuntu6 to 1:7.1.1ubuntu6.2. It happened during the upgrade in
question, and since then, it has happened once shortly after each time I
resume from hibernation. Logging out and in again solves the problem
temporarily, until the next day when I resume. It seems to happen about
5 minutes after I resume (has happened three times so far). If I leave
it running, without re-logging in, the screen shifts further to the
left. I'm guessing it's about 50 pixels at a time. The mouse pointer is
still using the real screen coordinates, so I have to click 50 or so
pixels to the right of where I want.

I'm running the nVidia 8776 driver from the official repos, on a
GeForce4 4200 Go graphics card in a Dell Latitude D800 with a widescreen
1680x1050 monitor. Taking a screenshot does not show the problem (the
screenshots look normal), so I can't show exactly how it looks,
unfortunately.

RE: [Bug 21186] Re: grub uses wrong bootparameters with sda after install

2006-12-15 Thread Janko Knops
Well, the error is in it for some time already :/ I can still reproduce the
bugger time and time again.

I solved it by making the config file read only. It isn't a very decent way
of fixing the problem, but it seems that the grubdevelopers from Ubuntu
don't have any interests in solving this problem.

Hope it helps for you,

Cheers,

Janko

I can confirm this bug on my system. I'm using an IDE drive and an
additional SATA. Normally, grub-config wouldn't hose my system, but on the
 Dec 13th upgrade, it did.
My root line was changed from (0,4) to (1,4) and left me with an
unbootable system for a while (since it was hard to diagnose because the
error was #15, File not found).

[Bug 58386] Re: ACPI: Looking for DSDT ... not found! (message during boot)

2006-12-15 Thread Rouben
This is not a definite fix, but rather a workaround. Try disabling ACPI
altogether. There's a nice forum thread on the topic:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2620

Another thing to try is to dig around in your motherboard's BIOS, since
most motherboards nowadays have Linux listed as one of the choices under
Installed OS. Also check the motherboard manufacturer's website to see
if there is a BIOS upgrade available for your motherboard.

Please let me know if this fixes the issue and good luck!

I suppose we can do something similar with other locales, but I don't

[Bug 75864] No easy way to create launchers on panel or desktop

2006-12-15 Thread Daniel Dickinson
Public bug reported:

Creating desktop or panel launchers is not user friendly for new users.
I'm okay because I've used debian and have gone through the package list
a few times so I have a good idea of what the executable's name is for a
given menu entry, and I know where to find the icons
(/usr/share/{icons|pixmaps} or application dir), but a new user is SOL.

Ideally one could right-click on a menu and create a launcher in the
desired location, or the create launcher window could let one browse the
menu (not just the menu file though because most menu items are part of
includes that aren't in the menu file) and select the application of
choice.

[Bug 75866] High packetloss over Atheros wireless

2006-12-15 Thread Jon Kåre Hellan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-10-386

Wireless worked flawlessly on my Thinkpad T42p while it was running
Dapper. With Edgy, I experience high packetloss - smokeping reports
around 5% loss. Smokeping - http://oss.oetiker.ch/smokeping/ - is a tool
which fires bursts of 20 pings every 300 seconds.

Working interactively over ssh, the subjective experience is that the
session periodically hangs for a number of seconds. In between the
hangs, it feels almost normal, although repainting a remote emacs is
sluggish. On the other hand, most bulk transfers are fast.

Packet losses come in bursts. The worst smokeping series lost 12 of 20
pings, while most lose nothing at all.

The interface is configured from /etc/network/interfaces. Encryption is
WEP. Neither NetworkManager nor WPA-supplicant is used.

crash file to generate a debug backtrace. You can also use
apport-retrace --gdb to attach gdb to the dump then

[Bug 34233] Re: g-p-m failing to use DPMS to power off display

2006-12-15 Thread Johannes Hansen
Yes, there is really an issue with the lid state.

If
cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state
always returns:
state: closed
whether laptop is closed or open, you have an acpi bug...

But g-p-m NEVER does dpms on when lid state = closed.
The bug is fixed in g-p-m 2.17.1, where you're able to set a gconf-key to make
it work.

instructions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingFirefox#head-a9489290d4905eb6c4071c1ea5f00a1a0a149f78

This will start firefox with a brand new user profile, so no extensions,
themes, plug-ins etc. will affect the install. You can return to your
normal profile by simply replacing the newly generated ./mozilla folder
with the old one.

Thanks again, Alex.

Right now, Feisty Development started, and nothing happens - still this
VERY old version. Is it a such big problem to update the version for
Ubuntu?

I know very many people who dont like IDE's or mostly their editors, but
everyone was interested when I introduce them to PIDA..

Its great for developers who are most productive with VIM.. Because with
PIDA they will get more productive, instead slowed down of IDE and their
bad editors.

Sorry for this advertising text, but if only Ali comments here, it could
look like that the users have no interest in that. But they have - just

[Bug 75852] Re: Crash on connection to a second server.

2006-12-15 Thread Guillaume Desmottes
I mark this bug as needinfo but i'm tempted to close it as i'm pretty
sure we've fixed this crash on HEAD.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
Unfortunately, that stack trace is missing some elements that will help a lot
to solve the problem, so it will be hard for the developers to fix that crash.
Can you get us a stack trace with debugging symbols? Please see
http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The problem occurred because of a botched dist-upgrade. I think it was
caused by having firestarter installed when I ran the upgrade. I was
forced to reformat and reinstall from scratch.

Thanks,

[Bug 68163] Re: crypto module not working

2006-12-15 Thread Nick Moffitt
This particular problem doesn't seem to manifest upstream in Debian. I
had a friend try this on Debian Unstable:

 1 crypto:start().
 ** exited: {undef,[{crypto,start,[]},
{erl_eval,do_apply,5},
{shell,exprs,6},
{shell,eval_loop,3}]} **
 =ERROR REPORT 15-Dec-2006::23:16:27 ===
Error in process 0.30.0 with exit value:
{undef,[{crypto,start,[]},{erl_eval,do_apply,5},{shell,exprs,6},{shell,eval_loop,3}]}
 2

For reference, on my edgy system:

[EMAIL PROTECTED](~)] dpkg -S crypto_drv.so
erlang-base: /usr/lib/erlang/lib/crypto-1.5/priv/lib/crypto_drv.so

And on my friend's Debian Unstable system:

erlang-base-hipe:
/usr/lib/erlang/lib/crypto-1.5/priv/lib/crypto_drv.so

So it is in the same location as Debian's. Why then doesn't it load on
Ubuntu?

[Bug 68163] Re: crypto module not working

2006-12-15 Thread zeank
Actually this proves only that crypto is broken at debian unstable too.
Though in some different way.

If it were working you'd see this:

Erlang (BEAM) emulator version 5.4.9 [source] [threads:0]

Eshell V5.4.9 (abort with ^G)
1 crypto:start().
ok
2

If you get

{undef,[{crypto,start,[]},{erl_eval,do_apply,5},{shell,exprs,6},{shell,eval_loop,3}]}

instead, this means that a matching call 'start' within module 'crypto'
could not be found.

ldm the ltsp login manager sets the ESPEAKER variable, the initscript
that starts ldm also starts esd on the thin client (if SOUND=True is set
in /opt/ltsp/$ARCH/etc/lts.conf (which is the default since edgy)).
gstreamer is set to automatically use esd for output.

so all applications shipped by default (we only ship gstreamer aware
apps in the default desktop) should work right. third parts apps or
universe apps that dont use esd by default need to be set up to do so.

[Bug 42882] Re: PIDA version in dapper is very old

2006-12-15 Thread Ali Afshar
Thanks for the vote of confidence! Words like these keep me going.

The version in edgy (0.3.1) has only just been obsoleted last week, and
now we are up to version 0.4.1. Hopefully 0.4.1 (or newer) will make it
into feisty. I shall talk to our Debian maintainer, Jan Luebbe, about
it.

[Bug 75873] script folders

2006-12-15 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'd like to comment on an idea I read on Ubuntuforums: script folders.
These would be like common folders containing items, only that a given
script would be applied to all files copied to them.

Imagine that I want my wallpapers to be at the same size as my screen:
1280x800. However, all the walls that I download are at bigger sizes, so
I need to resize them one at a time, which can get really cumbersome.

With script folders I could create a folder named 1280x800, and linked
to a script used to resize images to that size. Any files copied to it
would be automatically resized AND stored in the folder.

What do you think about it?

same as the level of support, closing a distro wide bug only because one
