ldm the ltsp login manager sets the ESPEAKER variable, the initscript that starts ldm also starts esd on the thin client (if SOUND=True is set in /opt/ltsp/$ARCH/etc/lts.conf (which is the default since edgy)). gstreamer is set to automatically use esd for output.
